The centre with its various offerings does not only intend to respond to the demands of the 21st century employers seeking a work force with specialised skills, but also to reach into the deep rural areas like Elukwatini and Tjakastad in the Mpumalanga Province to offer skills training to the unemployed. Programmes identified by the various Sectoral Education and Training Authorities and registered by the South African Qualification Authority are utilised to train learners to gain a qualification. A certificate will be issued by the relevant Sectoral Education and Training Authority when the requirements of the qualification or the skills programme have been successfully completed by the learner. These programmes are either funded by the National Skills Fund, or one of the various Sectoral Education and Training Authorities or the Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport running programmes such as Extended Public Works Programme and National Youth Service and the Department of Rural Development running a programme called National Rural Youth Service Corpse. Recruitment for these programmes is mostly done by the various Departments, Local Municipalities, Department of Labour and Employers. Colleges have been placed at the centre of the skills development agenda of the country and are regarded as key role players in addressing unemployment, poverty and inequality. Innovative use of technology, strong student support services, high academic standards and well-resourced facilities are some of the factors that enable the college to excel. The college developed a Skills Academy and Artisan Development Centre to complement the NC(V) and Nated programmes offered by the college on behalf of the Department of Higher Education and Training. The Skills programmes offered by Skills Academy respond directly to the skills shortages of South Africa in general and Gert Sibande Region in particular. The college provides most of the programmes in partnership with other government organisations such as the National Skills Fund or one of the various Sectoral Education and Training Authorities. These programmes are offered by highly competent and dedicated staff members in modern infrastructure and an environment that is conducive to success. The primary objective of the Skills Academy is to provide occupational skills to students that will enhance their opportunities to become employed or start their own entrepreneurial ventures. Consequently priority is given to preparing students for the workplace with a strong emphasis on practical training.
