WE MAKE THE EQUIPMENT . . .

In 1962, Siegfried Gerstung, a native of Munich, Germany, founded Gerstung International Sport Education Inc. as a service organization for instruction in physical education. Today, there are numerous facilities, private and public school systems worldwide which have adopted the Gerstung teaching method. Over a 50 year period, the Baltimore headquarters and national training center offered more than 120 classes to over 1,000 students weekly in a 42,000 square foot (3,900 square meter) facility. Courses such as Movement Education, Gymnastics, Fitness, Dance, and Adventure Sports were offered in the fall, spring and summer sessions. Also, adult classes, corporate team building, summer and winter camps and special events took place throughout the year.

In order to teach basic skills, problem solving, decision making and develop confidence, in pre and elementary school children, Siegfried Gerstung created innovative apparatus. In 1967, Gym-Thing Inc., a small factory and manufacturing company trading as Gerstung was established and began selling its unique equipment and teaching philosophy across the country. From producing movement and educational gymnastics equipment, Gerstung went on to create the most resilient aerobic and dance floors in the world.

Today, Gerstung International's primary focus is on the development of a confident learner on the early elementary school level.

Preschoolers are driven by the desire to move. Gerstung created Little Gym-Things to educate preschoolers through movement. This smaller line of equipment is a reflection of our traditional movement education apparatus, with new and exciting possibilities. On this age-appropriate equipment, children learn to make decisions, express independence, and develop strength, awareness, confidence, and creativity.

Since 1964, the goal of Gerstung has been to create the environment that challanges the curiosity of children providing the motivation for learning. The Little Gym is for children ages 9 months - 5 years and are fully compatible with all other movement education equipment. The apparatus is extremely sturdy and able to support any adult who wishes to be a child again.

MOVEMENT EDUCATION, THELINK BETWEEN MIND AND BODY(WHY IT IS ESSENTIAL FOR THE DEVELOPING CHILD)By: Siegfried Gerstung

Movement Education is not a new concept, but one that the general public has embraced rather slowly. Many people look at physical education, or movement education as mere fun and games to keep children physically active, having little to do with cognitive growth and the intellectual development of young children. The common misconception is that the brain and the body should to be trained independently. Nothing could be further from the truth on the preschool and elementary level. Decades of research have shown there are substantial links between movement and the proper development of cognitive abilities in the brain.Children must acquire knowledge through play, experimentation, exploration and discovery. What better method do we know for children to explore a concept or solve a problem, other than through movement and play, that’s what kids do best? Children should be, as much as possible, naturally involved and connected with their task on hand. It allows students to freely apply previously experienced knowledge and challenge their critical thinking. Movement programs that emphasize language, numbers, colors, music, and rhythm are particularly effective; and applying this to climbing on Movement Apparatus creates the ultimate experience of decision making, problem solving and creativity. As Movement Educators we combine decision making with problem solving, mostly in a three-dimensional environment. The new Movement Education Concept goes beyond the physical abilities of managing the body, space, effort, their relationships and quality of execution. We ask: “Is there an other way?” and always encouraging creativity by asking questions. There is substantial biological, clinical, and classroom research that supports the conclusion that Movement Education plays an integral role in boosting cognition, spatial perception, language, attention, decision making skills and the gathering of basic knowledge.Movement Education is a foundation for learning that connects mind and body, gives children the opportunity to explore their abilities and develop the self confidence of a better learner - (while still playing and having fun!)
