The German Startup Monitor (Deutscher Startup Monitor DSM) is a Project of the German Startup Association (Bundesverband Deutsche Startup e.V. - BVDS), the Berlin School of Economics and Law (Hochschule für Wirtschaft und Recht Berlin - HWR Berlin) and the Sponsor KPMG Germany.

Startups are defined by 3 criteria:
Age! Startups are younger than 10 years.
Focus on Innovation! Either with technology or business model.
Growth Orientation!Aim for significant growth (turnover and/or number of employees).

# CO-OWNERSHIP IN GERMAN STARTUPS
35,7% of the startups plan to establish ESOPs.
Startup-Entrepreneurs are prepared to
give up to 13,4% into anESOP.
Currently employees hold, on average, 6% of a startup.
38,5% of the DSM Startup-Entrepreneurs create Employee Stock Ownership Programmes (ESOPs).

It´s a dilemma ! German scociety considers failing as a entrepreneur as a personal weakness and failure.
But: more than 50% consider
the image of the entrepreneur as positive.
63,3% of the DSM Startup-Entrepreneurs see only little tolerance for failure in the German society.
