Geospace Environmental Modeling• One of three sister NSF programs in heliophysics with
SHINE and CEDAR.
• Covers magnetospheric physics from bowshock to ionosphere.
• Consists of a Chair (term 2 years), a chair-elect who becomes chair, and a Steering Committee who oversees Research Area Coordinators and Focus Groups.
• Have abandoned previous Campaign structure in favor of multiple, short-lived focus groups.
• Current chair, Mike Liemohn; chair-elect, Dave Sibeck.
Short-Term GEM Plans• 2009 Workshop held in Snowmass, CO, June 21-26 (in
parallel with SW12).
• Will hold mini-workshops at AGU in December on preceding Sunday.
• 2010 Workshop will be held in Snowmass, CO, June 20-25.
• 2011 Workshop expected to be joint with CEDAR but not yet settled. Probably will be held in Santa Fe.
• Summer workshop is steady at about 200 attendees.
• GEM welcomes suggestions for joint studies. Is interested in many of the same physical processes as SHINE.
