George was the eldest son of the Duke of Brunswick-Luneburg.

During the war of the Spanish Succession, he Fought against the French.

He did not speak in English, but his ministry

Robert Walpole spoke in Latin to converse with him.

He turned to the Whigs to form a government.

His accession made the Whigs supreme.

In the early years of his reign, he was active in

British foreign policy. Later, he did not participate in the cabinet

meetings. So, he lost power of decision on what was to

be done.

George I was faced with rebellions by the

Jacobites, who were supporters of the Catholic James Stuart (mainly in Scotland).

These rebellions were in 1715 & 1719. Some Tories were sympathetic to the Jacobites.

There was a decline of the political power of

the monarchy and George was affected by this.

In 1727, George died and was succeeded by his son.
