PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
MARCH 2014
GEORGE BASS SCHOOL
NEWSLETTER
I have the honour of writing the very first Principal introduction to the George Bass School newsletter. On behalf of all of the staff at George Bass School I would encourage all families, carers and community members to regularly read our newsletter. It will enable each of you to stay in touch with what is currently happening in the school. It will also give you the opportunity to get a snapshot of what is happening in each of the classes, as each class will write an item per term and submit this to the newsletter. This will be the only newsletter in Term 1, however from Term 2 onwards the newsletter will be produced in weeks 3, 6 and 9.
The newsletter also gives me the opportunity to keep the school community informed about what has happened recently in the school, what is going to occur as well as celebrate the achievements of our students and community. Meet the Teacher Night I would like to thank all of the families and members of the community who attended our meet the teacher BBQ night in week 4. Although the weather wasn’t overly kind to us the evening was well attended. Thank you to our staff for staying for the evening, helping to set up and leading families through their programs. Thank you also to the parents who provided desserts for the evening. Assemblies A reminder to parents that school assemblies occur each Thursday morning from 9.30 to 10.15am. Parents and families are welcome to attend each week. This is an opportunity to see students receive awards and to see our class performances. They are a great event and help to build our sense of community. Student Illnesses Quite often when students enter a new school they become susceptible to illness. If your child is ill, it is important that they stay at home so as not to spread contagion to other students or to teachers at school. Once your child returns to school following an illness please put a note in the communication book outlining the reason for their absence. Therapists A reminder to everyone that if your child is supported by a therapist we are happy to exchange information and work with them, however they need to make an appointment with the school. I will then need to negotiate with each class teacher what is able to be provided in terms of meeting times and further support.
George Bass School although it is still very new, is already providing high quality programs to its students. We want to be able to pride ourselves on our ability to work with families to give the best opportunities for our students in the education. If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact the school so that we can discuss these.
Regards, Peter Skinner Principal

BURRU CLASS
Hello we are Burru class. There are 2 boys and 4 girls in our class and we are settling in well and making friends. We are learning all about “ME” and what makes us special. We love music in Burru and enjoy singing and listening to music. Our morning circle is full of music and is a great way to start our day. We have been swimming, cooking, jumping on the trampoline and enjoying the different types of sensory activities – especially the jelly balls in the picture. Our favourite book is ‘Spot goes to the Farm’ and we try to make all the animal sounds. We are having an awesome first term and cannot wait for what the second term has in store for us.

MOGRA CLASS
Mogra has been having a wonderful time getting to know each other. We have been learning All About Ourselves ‐ who we are, what we look like, our likes and dislikes and how our bodies move. On the playground we love to play with all our new George Bass friends and we particularly like to play with bubbles. A favourite song we like to sing is Five Little Speckled Frogs, so we made puppets to dance with. An important skill we have been developing is how we greet our friends – we love to give a hand‐shake, wave hello or do a high‐five. We are doing really well in the pool and it is an activity we are enjoying more and more. It is very exciting being part of a new school and we look forward to learning many new skills.

KARUK CLASS Karuk is an Early Stage 1 class. There are 2 girls and 4 boys in the group. Some of us need physical assistance to participate in our activities while others only require verbal reminders. Each morning we participate in Morning circle were we practice our literacy, numeracy and communication skills. We all enjoy sensory play, particularly bubbles and play dough. We enjoy music, cooking and art and craft, especially when we get to use paint! During the week we also participate in physical activities that assist in developing and maintaining our gross motor skills. Our COGS unit this semester is ‘Me’. We have been discovering our similarities and differences, exploring our daily environments' including home and school and learning new and appropriate ways to communicate our needs and wants. There is so much going on in Karuk that most days we all go home tired, and happy with our accomplishments. We might be small but we certainly do BIG things.

WALI CLASS We have been enjoying our first weeks at George Bass School. As part of our Literacy program, Wali has been reading the tale of ‘Possum Magic’ by Mem Fox. We have enjoyed travelling around Australia alongside Grandma Poss and Hush to discover lots of tasty treats from near and far. We have recreated many Australian foods during our cooking lessons and so far we have made lamingtons, Anzac biscuits, scones and cheese and vegemite sandwiches. This semester we are learning about families. We have been talking about who is in our family as well as discovering that families are so diverse and differ in a lot of ways. We are looking forward to Harmony Day to celebrate our culture and to learn about different countries and their traditions also.
