Generally, there are three routes at Olds College to enter the trades: Pre-Employment: Pre-employment programs are an apprenticeship preparatory program and are equivalent to the first period of technical training. If you are interested in training for a trade, but do not have experience because you cant find employment, then a pre-employment program could provide you with the necessary training and education to make yourself employable. Students graduate with a certificate and are eligible to write their first period apprenticeship exam if they have a GPA or 2.3 or higher. The pre-employment programs are delivered over 12 weeks and have an alternate admission option. Apprenticeship: Apprenticeship is a combination of on-the-job and technical training in an earning-while-learning arrangement that leads to certification as a journeyman in a recognized trade. Apprenticeship students are employed with a company and working under a qualified tradesman to become familiar with the principles, skills, tools and materials of a trade. This is the most affordable route students can take to gain their training. Eligibility is managed by Albertas Apprenticeship & Industry Training (AIT). Technical training is offered over 8 weeks. The first steps to starting an apprenticeship are: (1) Find an employer in your field of interest; (2) Complete the Apprenticeship Application and Contract (Apply online through MyTradesecrets); and (3) Earn While You Learn. Olds College Certificate & Diploma: If you want to get your hands on the newest and largest industry equipment in service then come to Olds College. This comprehensive program will give you a thorough understanding of engines, hydraulics, braking, electrical, starting, charging, fuel systems and more. You will spend the first year covering all fundamentals before specializing in your second year with either the agricultural or heavy equipment major. Albertas Apprenticeship & Industry Training - more benefits for students! When you graduate with a certificate, you can choose to write the apprenticeship exam for the first and second periods in either the Agricultural or Heavy Equipment programs. But heres the big benefit, should you decide to stay for the second year and get your diploma either specializing in Agricultural or Heavy equipment you then have the option of writing apprenticeship exams for full technical accreditation towards your specific trade. Students must have a GPA of 2.3 or higher to be eligible to write their technical exams. You will also be well placed to attain Alberta Journeyperson Status pending completion of job training hours specified by Alberta Industry Trade Board. The certificate program is a 1 year, full-time program of study and has academic requirements for admission. After the successful completion of the certificate, students can submit an Intent to Return form to return for an additional year to complete the Diploma and then write their third and fourth period apprenticeship exams for full technical accreditation.
