New Entry Induction to training with the Maritime Youth Group

1st Parade Night

On arrival to the unit:

To be escorted to the office by the nearest person at the time of arrival.Basic Details, e.g. Name, age Telephone number to be filled in by Admin on a new entrant form. Introduce the new cadet to their liaison cadet. The Liaison cadet will show them the main unit features, prior to colours, consisting of the Heads and the Fire Evacuation Point.

ColoursWhen all cadets are fallen in on the Main Deck, the new cadet will have the colours routine explained to them by their Liaison Cadet.

After colours and First Half:Following colours a tour of the unit must be done. Covering Health and Safety is not essential as this will be one in the New Entry Induction to Health and Safety. The tour of the unit is also to introduce the new cadet to the staff that are not instructing. The other purpose of this is for the new cadet to get to know which member of staff does which job! Also within the first half the liaison cadet will explain what activities we do in the Maritime Youth Group.

Stand easy:During stand-easy the Liaison cadet will introduce the new cadet to the other cadets in their division.

Second Half:During second half on the first parade night the new cadet will be introduced to the other new entries. They will then all under-go a basic drill lesson, to include the following orders:

Standing at ease Standing at Attention Turning aft Turning inboard Dressing off

Evening colours:The cadet will sit through evening colours to see how the evening colours routine is done, the Liaison cadet will then escort the new cadet to the office to collect the relevant MYG forms, which must be returned to the office on the second parade night.

2nd Parade Night

On arrival:

The new cadet will be greeted by their Liaison cadet, the new cadet will then integrate with the cadets in Classroom or mess area on arrival and wait to be told to fall in.

Colours:

During colours the Liaison cadet will ask the new cadet a series of questions, such as which order did they carry out? What does colours mean? Etc.

First Half:

During the first half the new entry will complete the Health and Safety induction with one of the unit trainers. Following this Health and safety induction the new cadet will then go to stand easy.

Second Half:

During the second half the Liaison cadet will then complete a re-cap of what was taught on the first parade night, including the Who’s who board and which job means what.

During this re-cap a run through of the colours routine should be completed so that the cadet can fall in for evening colours.

Evening Colours:

Following the end of the second parade night the Liaison cadet will escort the new cadet from the building then speak to the Chief Instructor with regards to what sorts of things the cadet is interested in with regard to training.

The Maritime Youth GroupTour of the Unit

You will also be shown the emergency Fire Exits and it is important that you remember these, as you may have to leave the unit in an emergency. You will also be shown where you will muster in a safe area should this occur.

CARING FOR YOUR UNIFORM

The Maritime Youth GroupAs with any clothing, care must be taken when wearing your uniform to keep it in good condition. Cleaning and ironing must be carried out to ensure that it is clean and smart at all times. The following paragraphs give guidance on how to care for your uniform.

BERET

CLEAN CLOTHES BRUSH ONLY, alternatively you can use a lint roller or tape do NOT use boot brushes.

BOOTS AND SHOES

Clean all dirt off the boot/shoe, apply a black shoe cleaner allow to dry and polish to a high shine with a polish brush and/or polish cloth.

Should your footwear become wet, stuff with newspaper and let them dry naturally, DO NOT FORCE DRY.

COMBAT JACKET

Machine wash as often as necessary. These should be pressed as a normal jacket.

COMBAT SHIRT

Machine wash as often as necessary. Iron flat, creases are required down each sleeves and the collar and lapel should be pressed flat, (this will be demonstrated to you).

COMBAT TROUSERS

Machine as often as necessary. These should be pressed as for normal trousers with sharp creases to the front and rear of each leg.

JERSEY WOOL HEAVY

COOL HAND WASH as often as necessary. This is a woollen garment and VERY PRONE TO SHRINKING, iron flat with a warm iron.
