CLUB ASSEMBLY ON MAY 24TH 2016The Rotary Club of Wrexham Club Assembly 24.5.2016 took place at the Cross Lanes Hotel when an excel-lent dinner was served to members. Assistant Governor Prof. David Brigden, and other guests attended.President Keith Samuels thanked Council and the Club for their support during his Rotary year and he gave an overview of the varied enjoyable events which have taken place. Keith congratulated Deri Thomas on achiev-ing 50 years as a member of the Rotary Club of Wrexham. Over the same 50 year period, his wife Mary was a member of the Inner Wheel Club of Wrexham. Keith then wished President-Elect Tony Burdge much success during his forthcoming year. He commented that as Club Secretary, Pene Coles, will become vice-president, Past President Peter Howell has offered to become Hon Secretary for 2016/2017. Peter will also continue to produce the Club Bulletin and the Rolling Programme. President Elect, Tony Burdge, said that he had feelings of trepidation about coming into office and promised to do his best to help the club to move forward. His special aims for the year are: to increase membership; to look at every aspect of meetings; to review the club’s choice & level of support for local charities. He hoped that all members and their partners would enjoy the coming year. Membership Secretary, Mike Kagan, said that mailing local professionals and businesses was sadly unsuc-cessful last year. However, the Membership Committee are to meet Paul and Kirsty Cotton soon to talk through and explore many possible strategies and options for the future, including: special membership evenings, use of Facebook, creating Associate members and seriously considering Satellite clubs, Rotaract, and Corporate membership as ways forward. Peter Howell reported that the BT-sponsored free new website works very well and is easier to manage than the District 1180 template website, which also costs £50 per annum. The new website is evolving steadily and is also complemented by Rotary Club of Wrexham blogs on Facebook thanks to Pene Coles. It is hoped that the website and Facebook will help attract more contacts and even new members to the Club. Past President Glyn Pryce agreed to continue as Almoner/Welfare Officer for 2016/2017 and gave the meeting an interesting description of his job.Service Committees:Vocational: Past President Tony Thomas described his plans for 2016/2017 - they are varied and will include something for everyone. International: - Past President Peter Tompsett reported that the Foundation Grant for MHAT had been re-ceived. A donation had also been made to the End-Polio-Now campaign. Shelter box and Aqua box donations are planned for 2016/17. Peter has also conveyed various young people to school proms, using his vintage car, and has donated the proceeds to the club.Community Service: Keith Samuels described current and future projects.Fund raising: - Peter Butler described future events in the pipeline.Treasurer's Report: Robert Godfrey said that subscriptions this year will be £90 per annum. The increase has become necessary mainly because our numbers have fallen and subscriptions to RI, which are paid via RIBI and District, are spread across fewer people. Robert has reported details to RIBI of current membership, for the coming Rotary year. He reminded everyone that subscriptions must reach him before 30th June (but as is the case in past years they will not be banked until 1st July, 2016) Robert has published the Charity Trust Ac-count which reflects the hard work in money raising activities for the current Rotary year.President Keith Samuels invited Professor David Brigden, Assistant Governor, to speak to us. David brought greetings from President Chris Sumner and the Rotary Club of Neston. He mentioned his Club has only 15 members. David thanked the Club for letting him have reports in advance of his visit. He congratulated the Club on their achievements during the Rotary year and thanked all the committee chairmen for their commit-ment to their respective tasks. He mentioned that Clubs were now considering alternative approaches to Ro-tary meetings, i.e. venues, times of meetings, speakers. Rotary is changing and needs to continue to change to bring it in line with modern trends to attract new members. He agreed that Rotary documentation is very on-erous and needs to be simplified and said that Rotary events should be underpinned with fun whilst fundrais-ing. He congratulated Mike Kagan on wishing to achieve 3 new members in the 2016/2017 year. David sug-gested that the Club works hard to publicize all it does including getting editor's names and sending items per-sonally to them. He was impressed with our new website. Facebook is also a useful tool for advertising and raising the profile of the Club. David congratulated the Club on their Mock Interview programme and thought that the annual pantomime was a very good idea to include the extended Rotary family in social events. He mentioned a Rotakids Club. This Club is where a group of children get involved in a fundraising project and see it through with guidance. The funds raised are then given through a Rotary Club to charities. One such completed project was where a group of children washed cars for 3 hours and raised £600.00. David ended by saying that Rodney Stokes, Assistant Governor 2015/2016, Nantwich President, wished the Club a successful 2016/2017.

The Gift of Sight in aid of The Countess of Chester Eye Fund

Sponsored Cycle Ride Sunday 3rd July

After Event Report My friend Helen and I completed the Wiggle Liverpool to Chester to Liverpool Cycle event on Sun-day 3rd July. Over 3000+ cyclists participated in this challenging event. We started at 8.15am on the Liverpool side of the tunnel. We were set off in groups of about 30 cy-clists and informed of the pitfalls of riding through the tunnel. The down hill part was certainly pleas-ant, but the uphill exit was rather more challenging for “the old dear!”We had a comfortable ride to Chester via Parkgate on the Wirral for the first 25miles. Our first stop was at the Chester Countess Hospital where we had a short break at 10.45am. Harry was there to give us moral support. So far, so good, with a flattish ride to Ellesmere Port. After that the hills appeared at frequent intervals and there were many cyclists who like me, ran out of gears. I was consoled by the fact that a strap-ping chap who was walking with his cycle said, ”I hate this hill.” Helen was also very patient at waiting for me at periodic intervals just in case I got lost. There was only once when I thought I had taken the wrong route. When I eventually saw the 10miles to go sign, I began to think I might just make it to the end in time. Of course I still had the challenge of the uphill finish out of the Tunnel. I literally paced myself in the surreal silence, passing several who had given up cycling. That was a morale booster.Thank you so much for supporting me with donations.

GLOBAL GRANT FINANCED VEHICLES FOR MHAT IN CALICUT

The Mental Health Action Trust has received a Global grant of $68,000 USD to set up a mod-ern training and conference facility as its activities require a constant stream of trained doc-tors, clinical psychologists, nurses and volunteers. The money is being used to improve MHAT’s capacity to deliver services to an expanding area in the region of Calicut, Malappuram and Waynad districts in India. Existing government services are very poor and limited in scope. MHAT are setting out to relieve the situation in a population of 7 million where mental illness is rampant. The provision of transport for psychiatric staff is essential and a clear prior-ity and $31,000 out of the $68K was approved for buying the vehicles illustrated.

ATTENDANCE APOLOGIES LUNCH NUMBERS

The quality of our £10 lunches has improved considerably in recent weeks and the Ramada Hotel must be encouraged to continue to look after us well. On our part, we must do all we can to treat the Ramada fairly, providing them with accurate numbers of lunches re-quired. Should we order too many, that is very unhelpful to the the hotel management and the chef. Our policy with regard to making apologies has been clearly set out in our Annual Club Handbook for a very long time.
