DMR is a new digital mode for Amateur Communications. It is an open standard, non-proprietary protocol (ETSI TS 102) supported by many radio manufacturers worldwide including Kenwood, Vertex, Harris, Motorola, Connect Systems, Tytera and 10 others. Because of this digital standardization, it has driven the competition and lowered the cost of mobiles and portables!

!!!!!!!!!!!There!is!much!being!said!and!written!these!days!about!the!importance!of!bringing!new!HAMs!into!our!!!!Hobby.!There!are!many!obvious!reasons!for!this.!As!we!all!get!older!or!get!busy!with!other!aspects!of!our!lives,!some!will!leave!the!hobby.!Also,!we!have!the!use!of!many!commercially!valuable!portions!of!the!RF!spectrum!and!there!is!always!pressure!to!reallocate!bands!or!segments!of!bands!that!are!not!fully!utilized.!In!my!mind,!the!most!important!reason!to!bring!new!HAMs!into!our!hobby!has!to!do!with!the!energy!and!new!ideas!that!these!folks!bring!to!Amateur!Radio.!Amateur!Radio!has!always!been!a!learning!hobby!and!new!folks!help!us!to!keep!this!important!part!of!what!makes!our!hobby!so!much!fun.!

!!!!!Our!club!has!been!putting!a!lot!of!time!and!energy!into!getting!folks!started!in!Amateur!Radio!and!helping!them!to!build!their!skills!and!progress.!Our!Amateur!Radio!License!Classes!and!the!youth!outreach!work!that!we’ve!been!doing!are!two!good!examples!of!this.!To!make!these!efforts!as!successful!as!they!can!be,!it’s!also!very!important!that!we!provide!good!opportunities!for!folks!who!are!new!to!various!aspects!of!Amateur!Radio!to!learn!and!gain!experience.!This!is!where!Elmering!comes!in.!

!!!!Perhaps!the!most!challenging!part!of!Amateur!Radio!for!many!new!HAMs!is!making!the!transition!from!getting!their!initial!license!or!a!General!or!Extra!class!upgrade,!to!getting!on!the!air!with!their!new!privileges.!I!think!that!this!is!equally!true!for!newly!licensed!folks!and!for!folks!who!have!upgrade!to!General!and!are!looking!to!get!onto!the!HF!bands.!While!our!club!does!a!better!job!than!most!towards!ensuring!our!licensing!classes!include!practical!handsMon!topics!and!demos;!it’s!impossible!to!teach!everything!that!one!needs!to!get!the!most!from!their!Amateur!License!in!classes.!

!!!!So!what!does!effective!Elmering!look!like?!I!think!that!the!answer!is!different!for!every!HAM.!For!a!new!Tech,!it!may!be!as!simple!as!helping!the!person!to!pick!their!first!radio!and!antenna!along!with!some!help!getting!it!programmed!for!the!local!repeaters.!For!a!new!General,!it!is!often!about!helping!to!get!a!first!HF!antenna!up!along!with!helping!select!and!assemble!a!first!HF!station.!All!of!these!folks!will!also!benefit!from!help!getting!on!the!air!and!learning!to!operate.!Most!of!all,!a!great!Elmer!is!someone!who!is!willing!to!give!their!time!to!help!a!person!who!is!new!to!an!aspect!of!Amateur!Radio!learn!and!get!started!doing!what!they!want!to!do.!

!!!!I!have!personally!found!being!an!Elmer!to!be!one!of!the!most!rewarding!and!enjoyable!aspects!of!Amateur!Radio.!Every!time!that!I!help!someone!get!on!the!air!for!the!first!time!or!to!build!their!first!HF!antenna!or!station,!I!get!the!same!enjoyment!as!when!I!did!these!things!for!the!first!time!in!my!Amateur!Radio!experience!!

!!So!how!does!one!get!started!with!Elmering?!Well!our!club!provides!many!good!opportunities!here.!First,!take!some!time!and!get!to!know!the!newer!members!of!the!club.!See!what!they!are!interested!in!and!offer!your!help!and!support!where!you!can.!Our!Tech!Night!program!is!a!great!way!to!share!your!knowledge!and!experience!with!others.!Even!the!most!seasoned!and!experienced!HAM!needs!a!good!Elmer!when!they!decide!to!try!something!new.!You!could!also!open!your!station!to!newer!HAMs!and!offer!them!a!chance!to!get!on!the!air!and!learn!to!operate.!There!is!always!someone!looking!to!put!up!a!new!antenna!or!to!repair!an!existing!one.!These!are!all!great!opportunities!for!Elmering.!Also,!you!could!consider!creating!a!presentation!that!can!be!shared!at!club!meetings!or!perhaps!lead!a!Tech!Night!session!as!a!way!to!share!specialized!knowledge!or!experience!that!you!may!have.!If!you!are!new!to!the!Hobby,!perhaps!you!could!help!someone!who!is!studying!for!their!license!exam!with!some!of!the!areas!that!they!are!finding!difficult.!Also,!new!folks!tend!to!have!experience!with!computers!and!the!Internet!that!many!of!the!folks!who!have!been!in!the!hobby!for!a!while!could!benefit!from.!This!may!be!a!2Mway!Elmering!opportunity.!!

January Meeting – Project Night

!!!The!January!club!meeting!is!the!traditional!Nashua!ARC!Project!Night.!!At!this!meeting!several!of!our!Members!plan!to!share!some!of!their!latest!projects!and!ideas!with!the!club.!!Typical!projects!may!be!hardware!or!software!and!often!include!innovative!solutions!and!ideas!to!improve!equipment!setup!or!operation.!!!The!order!of!the!presenters!was!selected!at!random.!!!!Wayne!Grant!KB1HYL!presented!his!version!of!a!homebrew!Buddipole!antenna.!!His!design!was!based!upon!the!online!construction!details!posted!by!Budd!Drummond!W3FF,!the!Buddipole!creator.!!Wayne!used!CPVC!pipe!to!construct!his!antenna,!which!he!explained!is!lighter!and!more!flexible!than!traditional!PVC!pipe.!!His!Buddipole!antenna!is!designed!to!allow!operation!on!all!of!the!bands!between!20!thru!2!Meters.!!The!antenna!uses!homebrew!loading!coils!and!tuning!for!lowest!VSWR!is!performed!by!adjusting!the!length!of!the!telescoping!whip!ends.!!Wayne!showed!off!some!of!the!unique!construction!details!and!shared!some!insight!into!its!benefits!when!operating!in!a!restricted!apartment!environment.!!!!!!J.!Stewart!Dunn!W1ELX!showed!his!DC!power!analyzer!with!Power!Pole!Connectors.!!The!LCD!digital!readout!provides!for!operating!with!voltages!between!6.5!to!99Volts!and!currents!up!to!100Amps.!!Measurement!displays!can!provide!volts,!amps,!watts,!and!energy!consumption.!!The!device!was!from!Templar!Energy!LLC.!!!!Stewart’s!analyzer!operation!was!demonstrated!on!K1SMD’s!Go!Box!project!detailed!below.!!!!Steve!Davidson!K1SMD!presented!his!latest!Emergency!“Go!Box”!which!he!constructed!to!support!his!involvement!in!the!NH!Amateur!Radio!Emergency!Services!(ARES)!emergency!preparedness!organization.!!Steve’s!project!was!built!inside!a!large!orange!plastic!MTM!ammo!box!sold!online.!!The!Go!Box!held!a!20!AmpMHour!Sealed!Lead!Acid!(SLA)!battery;!a!100!watt!Icom!ICM7000!HF/VHF/UHF!transceiver;!a!dedicated!antenna!tuner;!an!Astron!voltage!and!charge!controller;!Headset!with!both!trigger!and!foot!switch!control;!and!a!Signalink!Digital!Interface!to!an!external!PC.!

Fred!Kemmerer!AB1OC!revealed!his!latest!project!to!allow!him!to!remotely!control!and!operate!his!radio!equipment!via!the!internet!or!by!using!his!cell!phone.!!The!goal!was!to!provide!great!flexibility!to!use!his!equipment!from!another!room!of!his!house!or!from!almost!any!remote!location!when!he!is!on!travel.!!Fred!demonstrated!a!live!link!to!his!home!station!using!his!laptop!computer!at!the!meeting.!!Fred’s!software!allows!remote!control!of!all!of!his!radio!functions!including!remote!antenna!selection!and!control.!!The!wireless!link!included!his!audio!stream!along!with!a!pan!waterfall!display!of!a!band!segment.

Mack!Wallace!KC1EOB!presented!his!2!meter!Moxon!Antenna!project!that!included!separate!directive!antennas!configured!for!vertical!and!horizontal!polarization.!!Each!of!the!two!element!Moxon!antennas!was!constructed!from!¼!

inch!copper!tubing!with!the!folded!element!spacer!separation!accomplished!using!short!segments!of!clear!plastic!tubing.!!!

Three!pieces!of!3/8”!inch!thick!fiberglass!plates!were!sandwiched!to!make!the!center!insulator!for!the!driven!element!and!provide!a!mechanical!support!hub.!!The!two!independent!Moxon!antennas!were!orientated!perpendicular!and!attached!to!a!short!antenna!support!mast.!!Mack’s!antenna!design!and!ruggedized!construction!revealed!one!of!the!many!aspects!of!our!hobby!and!should!serve!to!encourage!others!to!tackle!similar!projects.!!!!!!!

!!Anita!Kemmerer!AB1QB!presented!her!“DX!Alarm!Clock”!software!project.!!The!software!was!developed!using!the!Python!programming!language.!!The!software!is!designed!to!monitor!an!online!DX!Spot!server,!filter!all!incoming!records!for!needed!DX!zones!and!other!defined!selection!criteria.!!The!DX!Alarm!Clock!is!designed!to!alert!Anita!of!the!DX!Spots!that!satisfy!her!search!criteria!via!sending!an!eMmail!or!a!text!message.!!The!DX!Alarm!Clock!can!be!enabled!for!24!hr!monitoring!and!prompt!notification!of!potential!DX!opportunities!and!is!designed!to!support!multiple!users.!!Anita!cited!a!successful!example!of!the!DX!Alarm!Clock!alerting!her!at!3AM!in!the!morning!of!a!needed!DX!contact!allowing!her!to!rush!out!of!bed!to!the!radio!shack!to!work!the!needed!station.!!It!is!very!likely!that!we!will!hear!more!about!new!features!and!enhancements!to!Anita’s!DX!Alarm!Clock!software!in!the!future.!

!!!!Dennis!Marandos!K1LGQ!began!his!presentation!by!distributing!an!educational!comic!book!titled!“Archie’s!Ham!Radio!Adventure”!which!was!jointly!developed!by!the!ARRL!and!the!Amateur!radio!business!community.!!Dennis!revealed!that!the!author!of!the!original!Archie!comic!book!series!lived!in!Manchester!NH.!!!Dennis!also!shared!an!early!copy!of!the!Nashua!ARC!cookbook!containing!a!number!of!favorite!recipes!from!club!members!and!their!wives!developed!many!years!ago.!!Dennis!presented!his!latest!“rocket!launcher”!built!around!a!Toro!53708!electric!sprinkler!valve!controlled!by!a!momentary!switch!and!a!DC!power!source.!!The!antenna!launcher!projectiles!were!made!of!International!Orange!PVC!with!an!attached!a!light!weight!tracking!line.!!!Dennis!suggested!painting!only!the!smaller!center!portion!of!the!PVC!projectile!to!minimize!unnecessary!friction!when!the!larger!diameter!endcaps!of!the!projectile!were!painted.!!!The!design!was!very!straight!forward!and!well!defined!which!should!be!easy!for!others!to!construct.!!!!!!!!!!

We!had!our!first!Tech!Night!on!Tuesday,!January!12th.!The!topic!for!our!first!Tech!Night!was!“Antenna!Modeling!with!EZNEC”.!Wayne!Wagner,!AG1A!and!myself!led!the!session.!A!total!of!22!Nashua!ARC!members!braved!the!winter!weather!and!snow!to!attend.!

Our!approach!to!Tech!Night!sessions!is!a!handsMon,!labMlike!one.!Many!folks!brought!their!laptop!computers!and!used!their!copies!of!EZNEC!to!create!or!follow!along!with!the!antenna!models!that!we!discussed.!We!had!USB!memory!sticks!on!hand!with!the!antenna!models!and!other!files!that!were!used!during!the!session!so!that!folks!could!make!copies!of!the!files!on!their!laptops!and!follow!along.!We!also!had!paper!handouts!with!all!of!the!information!on!the!models!so!that!folks!could!play!with!them!after!the!session.!

The!session!covered!several!different!antenna!models!including!20m!Horizontal!and!Vertical!Dipoles,!two!variations!of!a!40m!Delta!Loop!and!a!2m!JMpole!antenna!made!from!300Mohm!twin!lead.!In!additional!to!building!the!models!of!these!antennas,!the!group!had!a!chance!to!use!the!models!to!see!the!impacts!of!changes!in!antenna!height!and!ground!characteristics.!There!was!lots!of!discussion!and!Q&A!during!the!session.!The!discussion!was!the!most!useful!part!of!the!session!as!it!allowed!everyone!to!share!knowledge!and!questions!about!antenna!modeling!and!antennas!in!general.!

Wayne!showed!us!how!to!build!one!of!the!antennas!that!we!modeled,!a!2m!JMpole!made!from!300Mohm!twin!lead.!This!was!a!great!way!to!show!how!one’s!effort!on!antenna!modeling!can!be!used!to!create!a!real!antenna.!
