Gelande’Summer Social Events & News

Have you been paying attention to summer? After a long slow start Mother Nature finally

decided to bring on the good stuff. With the change in weather, so did our club members.

Maybe you saw them on their bicycles, at picnics, or 2 deep at a local watering hole. It

has been a busy few months with 4 happy hours, 3 bike rides and the annual club picnic.

For those events you missed, here you your chance to read all about the fun here!

Since a lot has happened in a very short time let’s first rewind to July 13, when 15-20

members arrived on President, Ron Quick’s doorstep. These members had bicycles

ready to go as they were promised gourmet cooking by Ron himself. These willing

members set out on 2

different courses, based

on biking ability.

Although the short route

was clearly that; the hills

didn’t get any easier.

Congratulations to those

who stuck it out! Despite

the hills, and a tire

blowout it was all worth it because of a stop at the famous Iron Buffalo in Menchalville.

After cooling off and gaining refreshments the ride continued back to Ron’s house for BBQ

pork sandwiches. Members brought a great array of dishes to pass. The beverage of

choice to wash it all down was Ron’s top secret Lynchburg Lemonade recipe. I wonder if

he could bottle that and bring it on a bus trip? Needless to say that everyone had fun, and

we are planning on doing it

again next year, but with a

twist. Watch the spring

issues of The Gazette for

more details. Please help me

in thanking Ron and Jackie

for opening there home, and

making such great hosts!

Next up was the annual club

picnic on August 3, 2013 held

in the town of Morrison at

Waymor Park. It was a great

temperature day with blue

skies and warm sun. The day began early for a number of people who chose the optional

side excursions. Brian Mudd led about a dozen folks to Wander Springs for 9 holes of

Page 9: Gelandesprung Gazette · Gelandesprung Gazette September 2013 QUICK ... trip includes travel, lift ticket, snacks & bever-ages on the bus plus “Lunch on the Moun-tain!” The bus

golf. Not everyone played great, but fun was still had and just about everyone walked

away with a door prize. Dan Goudreau also took a group of faithful bicyclists out on the

road to a local winery where it is rumored a few bottles of wine were consumed between

this crew. Everyone then met at the park for lunch that was served buffet style.

Throughout the day festivities members played ladder toss, shared in conversation and

helped celebrate a special birthday. A little birdie sent a tip ahead of time that Jeanine

Jenkins was celebrating her birthday the same day! Needless to say, she was thrilled to

have over 30 people singing happy birthday. I never publicly heard her say how old she

really was though but she was plenty grateful. With all well run

events like this, it takes volunteers. Thank you to Brian and Dan

for leading successful side trips, Paul Delveaux for being the

assistant and to everyone else for chipping in with set up and

breakdown. Also, thanks to Ron Quick and Judie Van Caster for

supplying the primary meat selection of pork and beef!

One cannot forget about the scheduled happy hours that has

continued to see great turnouts of 20 or more people. Since the

first one in early June, we have met at Fox Harbor, Hagemeister

Park and Regatta 220. Due to the outstanding turnouts and great

feedback, the schedule is being extended into the fall. The

schedule will be temporarily suspended during the normal ski

season though. Check out this issue for the fall schedule.

If your social calendar is not full, the board and I expect to see you at the Fall Banquet on

Friday October 25!

The 2013 National Bike Challenge is a free and fun program to help people across the U.S. improve their health, save on transportation, and reduce our impact on the environment. It is a free and easy way to challenge yourself to ride your bicycle for exercise and transportation. It is fun, promotes teamwork and encourages a healthy lifestyle. It is a great opportunity to loose a few pounds while sculpting our glutes for the beach. The warm-up period for this year’s challenge started March 1, putting the challenge way out in front of the weather this year. The warm up period allows you to start logging your miles for fun. The official start of the challenge is May 1, and the challenge will run through September 30.

Why Participate in the Challenge? • Fun: You can join a team or ride individually. Either way you can track your progress versus your

friends and you have a chance to win prizes. • Health: Participation in the challenge gives you a reason to get on your bike “today” and every

day. • Economics: Bicycles do not need to stop at the gas pump! Using your bicycle for transportation

saves money directly. More importantly, a healthy lifestyle can reduce health care costs. • Environment: Biking reduces greenhouse gases. Nearly 50% of all trips in metropolitan areas

are three miles or less, making these trips a good distance for cycling. • Camaraderie: The web page for the National Bike Challenge has a networking application. This

site is used to share information about cycling events and services. It also allows you to communicate with your friends and share information with the cycling community.

Join the challenge at www.nationalbikechallenge.org Click the “Join” button and become a new user or join via your Facebook profile. Now you have the chance to list your workplace. Make sure to write it in exactly as Thilmany, LLC so that you will be counted with us. The Challenge has many great prizes, and each month prizes will be given away to reward Challenge participants. The more you bike, the better your chance of winning will be! The Challenge uses a point system to encourage riding and measure your standing. You will receive 20 points for each day that you ride one mile or more plus one point for each mile that you ride. To learn more about the Challenge, visit www.nationalbikechallenge.org. To join a team, you will need to click on “Leaderboard” at the top of the page and navigate to the Teams section. Once there, a prompt will apear in the right side of the screen that says" It looks like you're riding solo! Click here to join a team." Once there, you'll be able to join our team. Sandy and I created a team for Gelandesprung and the Sly Foxes called "Skiers Roll." There is no limit to the number of team members; everyone is welcomed to join. There is a Facebook page for the Challenge – once you join, you can encourage others, just “Like” the Facebook page! http://www.facebook.com/pages/National-Bike-Challenge/578021728875832
