ECOSYSTEM BASED ADAPTATION AND CLEAN ENERGY FOR CLIMATE CHANGE MITIGATION PROJECTMALDIVESHUSSEIN ZAHIR, COMPONENT COORDINATOR
PARIS, 2 DECEMBER 2015, 16H30 – 18H
OBJECTIVES AND CORE PRINCIPLES OF THE PROJECT COMPONENTS
Address climate related risks facing Maldives and strengthen the country’s resilience to these risks throughIntegration Capacity strengthening, Improving governance, degraded ecosystems and inequity of resource use, Promote multi-sector approachesSustainabilitySustainable management, conservation, protection and restoration of ecosystems Through participatory, transparent and accountable approach based on available science and local knowledge
COMMUNITY BASED WETLAND CONSERVATION AND MANAGEMENT
Fuvahmulah and Hithadoo island has wetlands ecosystems of national significance
The project helped to improve the drainage issues and livelihood conditions
Controlled access and established a management mechanism
WCCM- CORAL REEF ECOSYSTEM HEALTH MONITORINGProject is to monitor for any effects from projected climate change on coral reefs and the goods and services that they provide engaging resource users (e.g. resort hotels)
A web enabled database developed to help make information on coral reef ecosystem health more readily available and accessible to support Policy and Decision making
SOURCES OF ELECTRICITY CONSUMPTION (THINADHOO)
Over 10% of electricity demand by diesel as BAU scenario substituted by solar PV
FUEL CONSUMPTION PATTERN AT THINADHOO
Reduced dependency on fossil fuel after solar PV from 2014 onwards
ACHIEVEMENTS2 ecotourism based conservation and management models initiated in two southern atolls of Maldives with ecosystem based adaptation
Coral reef ecosystem health monitoring stations piloted at 5 island resort hotels in Male atoll
1 island community electric supply operating with reduced GHG emissions
APPLICATION TO NATIONAL POLICY ON CLIMATE CHANGE
Awareness raised among island communities on climate change issues, and lessons learned from pilot actions management actions are disseminated
Private-public partnerships are promoted in support of climate change adaptation and mitigation objectives
GCCA +Scope to be replicated throughout the Maldivian islands & atolls
The EU through GCCA has committed an extra €4 million to scale up climate adaptation projects initiated in Hithadhoo and Fuvahmulah through CCAP
