    Subject: Anti-Dowry Day on 26th November 2009To:

    Dear Friends,

GLRF is a member of AMAN, a country wide campaign to stop domestic violenceagainst women. With its focus on gender equity issues amongst tribal communities,PWDVA implementation is something we should be concerned about when such

incidents have increased in all marginalised communities too.

GLRF will be hosting a small workshop on the issue ofAnti-Dowry on 26th November

2009 in Vikas Maitri, and we request all organisations / networks to come together -

National Alliance of Women's Organisation (NAWO), Adivasi Women's Network,Mahila Garima Abhiyan, Jharkhand Women's Network, etc.

Be a Partner to the event.

Please circulate information of this new marker on the calendar to all your network

partners and encourage them to include it in their celebrations of 16 days Fortnight on

Stop Violence Against Women - that is to celebrate 26th November as Anti Dowry day.

    28th November 2009 (Ranchi)

RANCHI | Saturday, November 28, 2009 | Print | CloseMeet on dowry & dom estic violence among tribals begins

Pioneer New s Service | RanchiThe topic of Dowry & Domestic Violence in the context of the adivasi community was discussed in the cityon Friday. Mahila Hinsa Pratirodh Pakhwara Ayojan Samiti and Gender, Livelihoods & Resources Forum(GLRF) jointly organised this programme.Women from Jamshedpur, Chaibasa and Ranchi actively took part in this programme cum workshop. Theprogrammes will end on December 10 as it is World Human Rights Day.The fortnight is celebrated all over the world as International Fortnight to end gender-based violence.November 25 is celebrated as International Day to End Violence Against Women and November 26 as Anti-Dowry Day across the world. The main topics discussed here comprised dowry-related issues faced by adivasi women. Domestic violencehas also raised eyebrows and women activists had raised this issue in the programme.Jharkhand Tribal Development Society programme officer Ajay Jharia Minz was also present at the occasionand said, Domestic violence in the tribal community has come after its contact with other communities. This is not the culture of tribals. Earlier, the boys parents use to gift cattle and commodities to the girls

side. However, since people have begun to stay away from their homes and slowly are becoming ignorant abouttheir culture, (they) have begun this dowry system, which is prevalent in other communities. Change is verynecessary and should be accepted but losing the essence is not good. Anybody who has lost their cultureand identity should not be called an adivasi, added Minz.Alcohol consumption and migration has been a prime reason which has increased the work load on women.Since they have to look after their family so work for them becomes a necessity. To counter domestic violence, which has arisen due to development of male attitude and alcoholism, Minzadded that women in some areas had started controlling the market. They have now restricted the time anddo not permit alcohol beyond sunset. Now, alcoholism on haat days is hugely controlled.GLRF was also actively involved in the discussion to observe the Anti Dowry Day as part of the samitisplanned activities. GLRF will also organise a quiz and elocution competition at Nirmala College on November30, St. Xaviers College on December 4 and at Xavier Institute of Social Service (XISS) on December 5 forinter and graduate students. Institute like rural management, marketing, personnel management and informationmanagement. The winners were Soumya Rani Gouda (first), Soumyojjwal Dutta

    (second), Reeti, Isha and Anupam.

The guests who also judged during the competitions were Dr Usha (Psychologist), DrKiran (Sambhava Women magazine) and Sarjeet Singh. The program was organisedunder the banner ofMahila Hinsa Pratirodh Pakhwara Aayojan Samiti which is

collective of many women organisation and networks (GLRF, NAWO, Mahila Garima

    Abhiyan, etc)

Dr Kiran said it is very much wrong to say that domestic violence is promoted by

women, as it is the patriarchal attitudes in which the society has been cultured. We needto hit at patriarchy, which might be present in women too, not solely a men issue.

    Students expressed various opinions ...

It is time for men and women to act beyond just talking about it. Boman Irani's

(Bell Bajao) video spot which showed how people in one neighbourhood knockthe door of someone engaging in domestic violence, need to be implemented.

Men have looked at women just with eyes (concentrating on her beauty aspect)but now they have to use brains to look at women's other mental qualities too,

which has been shown by Kiran Bedi and Arundhati Roy.

Women should have the freedom to choose what they want to do as an individual, she should get dignity as a human being.

  • 8/7/2019 GBV Fortnight 2009 Report

    17/29

There should be a policy of 'zero tolerance'. At least we students should feel itfrom our hearts and hope this effort kindles a new ray of hope amongst women.

To counter violence against women, men need to be sensitised. Young men needto stand for women's human rights.

The film has helped asserted and help us realise that women issues are beyond'reproduction', to contribution in production and efforts to create peace.

The Quiz involved questions related to Syeda Hameed, Smita Patil, Mother Teresa,

Sarojini Naidu, Meerabai, Roop Kanwar (Sati), film Provoked (on Kiranjeet Ahluwaliacase in England), Seema Biswas (Bandit Queen), Arundhati Roy, Aruna Roy, Pandita

Meet on dow ry & domestic violence among tribals begins

    Pioneer New s Service | Ranch i

The topic of Dowry & Domestic Violence in the context of the adivasi community was discussed in the city on Friday. Mahila HinsaPratirodh Pakhwara Ayojan Samiti and Gender, Livelihoods & Resources Forum (GLRF) jointly organised this programme.

Women from Jamshedpur, Chaibasa and Ranchi actively took part in this programme cum workshop. The programmes will end onDecember 10 as it is World Human Rights Day.

The fortnight is celebrated all over the world as International Fortnight to end gender-based violence. November 25 is celebrated asInternational Day to End Violence Against Women and November 26 as Anti-Dowry Day across the world.

The main topics discussed here comprised dowry-related issues faced by adivasi women. Domestic violence has also raised eyebrowsand women activists had raised this issue in the programme.

Jharkhand Tribal Development Society programme officer Ajay Jharia Minz was also present at the occasion and said, Domesticviolence in the tribal community has come after its contact with other communities. This is not the culture of tribals. Earlier, the boysparents use to gift cattle and commodities to the girls side.

However, since people have begun to stay away from their homes and slowly are becoming ignorant about their culture, (they) havebegun this dowry system, which is prevalent in other communities. Change is very necessary and should be accepted but losing theessence is not good. Anybody who has lost their culture and identity should not be called an adivasi, added Minz.

Alcohol consumption and migration has been a prime reason which has increased the work load on women. Since they have to lookafter their family so work for them becomes a necessity.

To counter domestic violence, which has arisen due to development of male attitude and alcoholism, Minz added that women in some

areas had started controlling the market. They have now restricted the time and do not permit alcohol beyond sunset. Now, alcoholismon haat days is hugely controlled.

GLRF was also actively involved in the discussion to observe the Anti Dowry Day as part of the samitis planned activities. GLRF will alsoorganise a quiz and elocution competition at Nirmala College on November 30, St. Xaviers College on December 4 and at XavierInstitute of Social Service (XISS) on December 5 for inter and graduate students. This State level event will take place on December 10.It will also reach out to Muslim students at City Public School of Hindpiri Fort, to increase awareness.

Along with these competitions, there will also be screening of a film - Redefining Peace by KP Sasi. This film consists of the story of1,000 women who were nominated for the 2005 Nobel Peace prize with the help of several women movements and organisationsacross the world.

Some 91 women were from India. They had actively taken part in the society issues. The film tells the story of the struggle andcontribution of these 91 women, who in their own way redefine peace.
