As a Council we had a think about what electrical appliances we could have used this morning before coming to school. This is the list we can up with.

Can anyone think of any other appliances they may have used this morning? Can you believe how many electrical appliances we use? All these things use energy, and we use them with out thinking where our energy comes from!We are all so dependant on electricity.

Page 5: Switch off fortnight 2010

This got us thinking about our school and how we use energy in school.

Page 6: Switch off fortnight 2010
Page 7: Switch off fortnight 2010

We were amazed at the amount of things we use in school that need energy/ electricity. From this we decided to carry out an energy audit one break time in school, and these are the results.

We counted the number of lights that were on and off in school. We counted 658 lights in school!!! As you can see by the totals at the bottom, over 386 lights were left on when they didn’t need to be. That’s over half of all our lights ! All that wasted energy!!

We then turned our attention to the electrical appliances in school. Again we were shocked at the number left on standby and left on! Every class had at least 4 items on or on standby. When equipment is on standby it still uses energy. We repeated the audit early one morning and found many of these appliances we also left on standby and even on , over night!!Just think of all that wasted energy!!

Page 10: Switch off fortnight 2010

If you didn’t know, using energy costs school money.

Eg – Mr Livesey found 14 computers had been left on in school over Monday night. This would cost the school about £1.50.You might say so what! But if these computers are left on every day which they may well be this would cost the school over £450. Money that could be spent on other things for the school.

A standard light would cost £0.006 or 6/10 of a penny to run for an hour.

We found 386 lights that were left on when they didn’t need to be. If they were left on each for an hour that would work out to be £2.31. if this happened every school day then over the year £ 450 would have been wasted. Simply by leaving lights on!

Page 11: Switch off fortnight 2010

It is for this reason we have decided to take part in Switch off fortnight.

By taking part our school could save a lot of money and the environment will also benefit. Not only that we could also save our parents money by doing the same things at home.
