Annotation: Author Lois Lowry begins Gathering Blue by introducing readers to a young girl

named Kira as she grieves the death of her mother. Without the protection of her widowed mother, Kira must struggle to secure a place for herself in a society that has little use for and looks unkindly upon imperfections, hers being her twisted leg. Kira’s struggle begins early with the immediate call to defend her right to stay with her people to the higher council. The argument continues until Kira is surprised to find that her mother, or the art of threading Kira learned from her mother, again saves her future. However, the girl’s gifted work exceeds the talent of her own mother, and leads her to bear the job of repairing a sacred robe of her people. Kira begins her new life relocated in a wonderful room and lifestyle that she slowly explores. As she becomes more familiar with her surroundings, she begins to find hints that the rules and ways of her society are not all they seem to be. Kira has befriended a few with whom she shares these questions, but as she soon finds, there are those that want to keep the society as it is, and to keep the secrets Kira is unfolding private. Kira begins to understand why she and her gifted friends are all brought to live under the surveillance of those in power, and the surprising truth of her own family’s history. With the discovery of her father’s past, and his own account of the society Kira still lives in, Kira is faced with a new decision. She has the chance to leave this society with her father, but she has come to own power in her society, making the decision to leave not an easy one.
