SITUATION An owner/operator was facing a major system upgrade on an oil production platform located in the North Sea. The existing compressor train system was obsolete, consisting of three compressors driven by a single gas turbine. The controls on the system were manually set and consisted of three anti-surge controllers. These controllers struggled to maintain an adequate ow rate and operated dangerously close to surge. To further complicate the situation, the controllers were no longer being supported by the manufacturer. This presented a signicant threat to production should the existing controllers failed. Finally, the client had installed new transmitter hardware into the control panels and wanted to incorporate them into the new control system. SOLUTION Continuing to build upon a 15-year relationship, CCC was called in to replace the outdated systems. CCC determined that the Series 3++ anti-surge controllers would effectively update the system and make it more reliable. The Series 3++ system calculated the proximity to surge using multi-variable application functions that were predetermined and customized to the client’s specic needs. This system was able to tailor the response to the size of each disturbance, preventing surge without offsetting other processes or requiring massive energy. A Series 3++ performance controller was implemented to adjust the speed to control suction pressure. The update was customized to integrate the client-installed hardware into the system, interfacing with the turbine HMI to allow the operators to monitor the compressor inputs, recycle value positions, etc. RESULT The system was installed and fully operational on schedule. By updating the compressor control system with the Series 3++ anti-surge and performance controllers, the client maintained a security of supply, a high level of reliability, and the added assurance of full support on the system. The new system afforded the platform maximum machine availability. The relationship between the client and CCC provided a synergy that allowed CCC to customize a solution that met the client’s specic issue and need. The project was so successful that the client is looking to implement the same solution on another platform. Throughput enhancement and reliability were achieved with a customized solution. • SITUATION An owner/operator was facing a major system upgrade on an oil production platform located in the North Sea. The existing compressor train system was obsolete, consisting

of three compressors driven by a single gas turbine. The controls on the system were

manually set and consisted of three anti-surge controllers. These controllers struggled

to maintain an adequate flow rate and operated dangerously close to surge. To further

complicate the situation, the controllers were no longer being supported by the

manufacturer. This presented a significant threat to production should the existing

controllers failed. Finally, the client had installed new transmitter hardware into the

control panels and wanted to incorporate them into the new control system.

SOLUTION Continuing to build upon a 15-year relationship, CCC was called in to replace the outdated systems. CCC determined that the Series 3++ anti-surge controllers would effectively update

the system and make it more reliable. The Series 3++ system calculated the proximity to

surge using multi-variable application functions that were predetermined and customized

to the clients specific needs. This system was able to tailor the response to the size of each

disturbance, preventing surge without offsetting other processes or requiring massive

energy. A Series 3++ performance controller was implemented to adjust the speed to control

suction pressure. The update was customized to integrate the client-installed hardware

into the system, interfacing with the turbine HMI to allow the operators to monitor the

compressor inputs, recycle value positions, etc.

RESULT The system was installed and fully operational on schedule. By updating the compressor control system with the Series 3++ anti-surge and performance controllers, the client

maintained a security of supply, a high level of reliability, and the added assurance of full

support on the system. The new system afforded the platform maximum machine availability.

The relationship between the client and CCC provided a synergy that allowed CCC to

customize a solution that met the clients specific issue and need. The project was so

successful that the client is looking to implement the same solution on another platform.

Throughput enhancement and reliability were achieved

    with a customized solution.
