Kidd Kraddick remembered

A celebration of the life of radio personality and philanthropist Kidd Kraddick, featuring the Jonas Brothers in downtown Dallas will be held on T h u r s d a y , August 15,

2013. According to a report from the Jefferson Parish Coroner’s Office

stated that Kraddick died from an “enlarged heart, blocked arteries and most likely an irregular heartbeat.” Born David Peter Cradick on August 22, 1959 in Napoleon, OH., the popular “Kidd” and grew up in Dunedin, Florida. At the time of his death on July 27, 2013, he was attending an annual fundraiser in Lousisiana for his charity, “Kidd’s Kids.”Kidd Kraddick decided on his career while serving as 10th grade class president. “We sponsored a big dance for the seniors but didn’t have enough money to hire a DJ. So I snuck out my dad’s stereo and did it myself.” From then on, he was hooked. After stints as a nighttime teen idol in

Miami, Salt Lake City, Los Angeles and Tampa (where he was given the name “Kidd” by a program director), Kraddick took his show to Dallas, where he quickly made the transition to morning drive. In 2001, the show was syndicated and is now heard in nearly 100 cities across the country and worldwide on AFN (American Forces Radio). The show can also be seen live each day on KiddTV, hosted by uStream and viewed on KiddNation.com. The show is like a daily soap opera featuring the real lives of its cast. But it’s not just the openness of the show that has driven its ratings to the top in virtually every possible demographic.

Services held for former Dallas Councilmember Chaney

Allstate and the Tom Joyner Foundation are working together to engage students, alumni and supporters of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) across the country to raise scholarship funds as part of the fifth annual Allstate Quotes for Education program.

For every person who receives an insurance quote from a participating Allstate agent and mentions Quotes for Education between August 1 and Nov. 30, 2013, Allstate will donate $10, up to a total donation of $150,000. The funds will be donated to the Tom Joyner Foundation and earmarked for general scholarship funds to assist students attending HBCUs.

For the second year, participants in this program will also have a chance to vote for the HBCU of their choice to receive an additional $50,000 donation for scholarships. In 2012, Lincoln University of Missouri won the inaugural competition and distributed scholarship funds to 25 students.

To participate in the Quotes for Education program, HBCU supporters should visit allstate.com/represent to find a nearby participating agent or receive a quote online.

Supporters are then encouraged to vote for the HBCU of their choice.

“We know that cuts to student loan programs over the past few yeats are

The Honorable Leo Chaney, Jr. died on Monday, August 12, 2013 after an electrical fire at his home. His family members say the cause of death was smoke inhalation. The horror of the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre in

Newtown, Connecticut is beyond comprehension.

Twenty children, their teachers and aides, their school principal, shot repeatedly by a 20-year-old wielding a semiautomatic assault weapon. This follows the recent movie theater attack in Aurora, Colorado and multiple college campus and high school shootings over the past years.

And daily in major cities like Chicago, the trauma builds. This year as of Dec. 10, Chicago has witnessed 485 killed in gun violence, 125 under the age of 18. As of 2009, there were an estimated 310 million non-military firearms owned in America. The country is saturated with guns.

It’s time to take action. None of us is safe in a nation where assault

weapons are readily available. We need to revive the ban on assault weapons now.

Another March, Another Dream50 Years After Martin Luther King Jr. Made

It was a time of terror and trouble. In the years before and after the historic March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom of August 28, 1963, there were repeated and widespread acts of violence. In Birmingham, Alabama, earlier that summer, four young black girls died in a church bombing.

Near Philadelphia, Mississippi, less than a year later, three Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) civil rights workers: Michael Schwerner, James Chaney and Andrew Goodman were murdered and buried in an earthen dam.

Nevertheless, on that hot summer day fifty years ago, an estimated 250,000 people came to Washington peacefully from all over America.

They gathered downtown in the long Mall between the Capitol and the Potomac River. Around the spire of the Washington Monument, beneath the spreading trees, beside the long, quiet reflecting pool, and

as close as they could get to the great, marble-columned memorial containing the statue of Abraham Lincoln, they waited.

It was there, at the broad white steps of the Lincoln Memorial that the leaders of the March had gathered.

Among them were A. Philip Randolph, director of the March and founder of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, Roy Wilkins – leader of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), Rabbi Joachim Prinz, president of the American Jewish Council, a Berlin rabbi of the Hitler era, and Walter Reuther leader of the United Automobile Workers. (UAW).

One by one, leaders exhorted the listening crowd. Randolph described the gathering as "the largest demonstration in the history of this nation." Reuther pictured the March as a "great crusade to mobilize the moral conscience of America."

Rabbi Prinz warned, "bigotry and hatred are not the most urgent problems," but that "the most urgent, the most disgraceful, the most tragic problem is silence." Recalling Nazi Germany, he added: "A great people, which had created a great civilization, had become a nation of silent onlookers. They remained silent in the face of hate, in the face of brutality, in the face of mass

murder. America must not become a nation of silent onlookers...."

Before and between the speeches there was music. Marian Anderson sang. Mahalia Jackson sang. Finally, it was time for Dr. Martin Luther King to present his historic dream speech.

Beginning by describing the gathering as "the greatest demonstration for freedom in the history of our nation," Dr. King went on to warn against "drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred."

He also warned against allowing "our creative protests to degenerate into physical violence." Instead, he advised "meeting physical force with soul force."

Finally, with his words resonating among the multitudes like great waves of light, Dr. King intoned: "I have a dream.... I have a dream.... I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. I have a dream...."

In the fifty years that have followed that march, Dr. King's words have echoed everywhere and inspired multitudes. Today, senior citizens who came to the march still remember.

One retired octogenarian now living in Florida insists: "It was one of the most

important experiences of my life."But beyond dreams, what is the reality?

What can and should be celebrated by the Fiftieth Anniversary March on Washington on August 28, 2013?

On the Mall, not far from the Lincoln Memorial, there is a much-visited granite memorial to Dr. King dedicated in 2011. Yet elsewhere, in places such as Stamford, Florida, and Chicago, Illinois, violence continues.

The tragic killings of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in Stamford and of 15-year-old Hadiya Pendelton in Chicago engender painful questions.

How can the "soul force" Dr. King recommended as an alternative to "physical violence" be engendered, employed, promoted? If there are answers, who has them?

Amidst contemporary pain and confusion, the dreams of Dr. King linger and inspire. To have a dream and work for it may be the only answer. As we approach the 50th anniversary of the famous March on Washington — Aug. 28 — Americans will recall Dr. King’s famous “dream”; many can recite entire passages of his historic address.

But it’s worth recalling the full meaning of that dream. The March on Washington was a march for justice.

And the Civil Rights Movement transformed the country — gaining equal access to public accommodations, outlawing racial discrimination in employment, securing and protecting the right to vote with the Voting Rights Act.

But the 1963 March was titled “March on Washinton for Jobs and Freedom.” Economic opportunity was at its center. As a key organizer of the march, A. Philip Randolph, president of the Negro American Labor Council, put it:

“We have no future in a society in which 6 million black and white people are unemployed and millions more live in poverty.

Nor is the goal of our civil rights revolution merely the passage of civil rights legislation. Yes, we want all public accommodations open to all citizens, but those accommodations will mean little to

those who cannot afford to use them.”

But for jobs and economic opportunity, the March on Washington remains unfinished 50 years later.

Nearly one-half of all African-American children live in neighborhoods of concentrated poverty. Nearly three-fourths attend majority minority schools, often

scarred by the “savage inequality” of public funding. African Americans are still two times more likely to be unemployed than whites.

Affordable housing remains beyond reach. Adequate public transport to allow access to jobs has declined, not improved. And in our inner cities and barrios, clean water, sound sewage, healthy food and good parks grow ever more rare.

The 50th anniversary must revive the movement to address this unfinished agenda. Only now the stakes are even greater. A majority of babies born in the United States are now children of

color. In three decades, more than half of our population will be people of color, according to U.S. Census projections. By 2050, Bureau of Labor Statistics projections estimate that 42 percent of our workforce will be African American and Hispanic (today that figure is 27 percent). Diversity is our reality.

We cannot afford to write off a majority of the next generation and still prosper as a

great nation. We will educate and engage the children of all races or we will suffer continued decline.

We have made great progress since 1963. American apartheid in the South was outlawed. Overt racial discrimination is against the law. No longer must African Americans move to the back of the bus.

But the agenda of economic justice remains unfinished. The demands of the marchers in 1963 resonate today: full employment, affordable housing, equal and excellent public education, a minimum wage the equivalent of $13 an hour in today’s terms. We argued in 1963 that removing

the shackles from the impoverished African-American minority would lift the nation. Now the challenge is to provide opportunity to all children, including the children of color who are America’s future majority.

Dr. Martin Luther King taught us that “Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed.” In this time of extreme inequality, equal opportunity will not be bestowed by the privileged; it must be demanded by working and poor people. Working and poor people, across regions and religions and race, must come together to transform our national politics and priorities.

Studies by theUniversity of Texas atDallas Institute of UrbanPolicy, United Way andTexas A&M are takingplace now to assess thequality of life in the SouthDallas community beforebillion dollar projectsinvolving the new DARTLight Rail and the Trinity

three institutions, a focusgroup of sorts dished ideasand findings on the surveysthat have told the story of theresidents of South Dallas.“We are measuring con-

(Matthew 8:23-27) For Thought: Sometimes we are like the disciples; we don’t recognize who is in the ship with us. Are maybe we forget who is in the ship with us. The believer needs to remember who is in the ship with him at all times. Notice how Jesus spoke to the storm once and it obeyed. Jesus sometimes has to speak to man more than once to get him to obey. Thank God for mercy. Amen. Abraham was fully persuaded who was with him. (Roman 4:17-21) my question today is you fully per-suaded who is with you at all times. Paul was also persuaded (Roman 8:35-39) Paul was persuaded and convinced nothing in his past or present life would separate him from the love of God. When you are convinced of who is in the ship with you worry will be in your of the past. You want worry about tomorrow anymore. (Matthew 6:25-34) When you are absolutely convinced you will give it to God; you will learn to rest and trust God with all that concerns you. (Matthew 11:28-30)

Jesus says, “If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching.” John 14:23. It seems to me that what is of importance here is recognizing the difference between “having” to obey and “wanting” to obey.

In our world, when parents enforce rules and discipline, the desire is that a relationship of respect and love will develop and the children will respond accordingly, whether the parents are within earshot or not; whether it will get back to them or not. Prayerfully, the hope is that the child will want to comply with an understanding that in the end, he or she will be better for it. If all one does is obey rules because of consequences and punishment, then rules generally get thrown out the window, when the rule maker is not around. I guess what I’m trying to say and what Jesus is alluding to is when grounded in love, people want to respond favorably, if for no other reason than to look good in the eyes of the person they are trying to impress. What Christ is saying is the same thing that many a mother and a father want to believe about their kids. If we’re honest with ourselves, we all know what behavior would upset Mom and Dad. We know this because they have spent a lifetime (yours and mine) instilling values and integrity into our character and hopefully into our very natures. You might still do things they wouldn’t condone, but you certainly know the difference between right and wrong because of your upbringing. That upbringing, if nurtured in the spirit of love, reveals to all of

us the source and nature of the consequences. The discipline that results from wrongdoing and wrong thinking comes from one place, love. If you can’t remember this, let me remind you that it’s that “this is going to hurt me more than it will you” thing.Christ is merely reminding us that if you love Him, then obey His rules, His teachings, which were given to us out of the love of the Father. Remember where they come from and why. Our desire to please should override our fear of discipline. My point is that obedience to God has so much more to do with wanting to do the right thing for the right reason, than doing the right thing because it is the law. One is the result of relationship, while the other is the result of fear of consequence. Throughout scripture, Jesus

constantly refers to the love of the Father. How many of you do what your mother would expect of you and she’s been dead for years? How many of you find yourselves passing along those same expectations to your children and are ready to pounce if you see disobedience? Why? I submit that you do this because of the relationship you have or had with your parents. This relationship thing serves us all well when we contemplate obedience. It’s a love thing. It’s a “want to” thing. “I will not speak with you much longer, for the prince of this world is coming. He has no hold on me, but the world must learn that I love the Father and I do exactly what my Father has commanded me.” John 14:30-31. To obey should be an act of love. As children this might be difficult to understand. As Christian adults, it shouldn’t be. Our goal should be to recognize God’s love for us and simply do our best to return it; act accordingly so to speak. May God bless and keep you always.

union president A. Philip Randolph, the leader of the March on Washington, then-President John F. Kennedy and Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy. Randolph announced the effort for a national nonviolent demonstration – as the Deep South convulsed during the hot 1963 summer of segregationist turmoil and violence.

Throughout the hour, witnesses to the March and people who played vital behind-the-scenes roles organizing the event discuss what it meant to the progress of American civil rights. Rachelle Horowitz describes how she and other non-African-American young people were drawn to their involvement in the Movement, and later the March. Years before, she had begun volunteering with civil rights organizations following an accidental meeting with the charismatic Ella Baker and Bayard Rustin at just 17-years old. By the time of the March, Horowitz played a key role in arranging transportation for demonstrators coming from around the country to Washington, D.C. – and Horowitz helped to recruit her friend, now- U.S. Rep. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) to become a March organizer.

What was it ultimately all for? Norton was also inspired by Rustin, who was now Randolph’s chief aide for the March. She puts it this way:

“It [The March] was about the fact that each and every one of us was denied basic rights simply because of the color of her skin. And we needed somehow to demonstrate that to the country. Make them do something about it.”

But, Lewis also describes the obsessive concern from the Kennedy Administration regarding the March – and specifically his planned remarks. Originally, Lewis planned to include a call to continue marching “through the heart of Dixie, the way Sherman did” and wanted to demand, “which side is the federal government on?”

Fears that Lewis’ speech would incite violence and offend the Kennedys, however, led to an urgent, last-minute conversation with Randolph and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. – intended to persuade Lewis to amend and soften his

remarks:“And, Mr. Randolph said, ‘John,

we’ve come this far together. Can you change this? Can you delete that? Let’s stay together.’”

International actor and singer Harry Belafonte leveraged his celebrity to heighten awareness to the struggles and violence happening in the South, raised funds for civil rights actions, and recruited other celebrities to participate in the March. Belafonte attributes the multicultural, multi-faith, multidisciplinary legacy of the March as the reason why the achievement continues to inspire younger generations – and people all over the world.
