Garland expands its Social Media Presence

The City of Garland is expanding its presence on social media to make information about various City programs more accessible. The City, as well as the Parks & Recreation Department, have had YouTube channels for several years, along with a Twitter page for the City (@garlandtxgov) and a Facebook page for the Parks and Recreation Department. The Nicholson Memorial Library System launched its Twitter page last year (@garlandlibrary).

Social media tools that have recently been added by the City include a general Facebook page (City of Garland, Texas Government). Information on this page includes announcements about City news, projects and events, along with videos. Other Facebook additions include the Animal Services Department (Garland Animal Services) to promote pet adoption and responsible pet ownership; the Granville Arts Center (Garland Arts) to promote cultural artseventsandactivities;andtheOfficeofNeighborhood Vitality (Garland Vital Neighborhoods) to promote the

variety of events and activities available that support Garland neighborhoods.

In addition, Garland’s city-owned utilities have joined forces to provide a special Twitter page dedicated to sharing information about energy and water conservation, recycling, and other healthy environment information. - During the months of August, September, the Inflow/Infiltration Division of the Water Department will perform smoke testing on the sanitary sewer mains. The testing will be accomplished in three phases.

Phase #1 - Area from Buckingham to Lawler between Glenville and Plano Rd.

Phase #2 - Area from Lawler to W. Walnut between Forest Ridge and Plano Rd.

Phase #3 - Area from Lawler to W. Walnut between Plano Rd. and N. Yale Smoke testing of the sanitary sewer system is conducted to identify potential rainwater sources by blowing low pressure, non-toxic, non-staining smoke into a section of sewer line. Smoke emissions from manholes and from the ground indicate defects in the manholes, sewer mains, and sewer laterals through which rainwater may enter the sewer.

Reducing rainwater entering the sanitary sewer pipes reduces the cost of treatment at the two wastewater treatment plants. A door hanger will be delivered three days in advance to streets where the smoke testing will occur. Since rain or high winds reduce the effectiveness of the testing, a test area may be postponed. Residents will be notified if defects are found on private property.

DALLAS – Want to have a fun dance workout and improve car safety for kids at the same time? A Zumbathon benefiting the Injury Prevention Center of Greater Dallas (IPC), located at Parkland Health & Hospital System, will be held from 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Aug. 10 at the Fireside Recreation Center, 8601 Fireside Drive, Dallas. Registration fee of $12 can be paid at the door. Proceeds will be used to purchase child safety seats that the IPC provides to families. Space at the Zumbathon is limited to 200 participants. Zumba fitness classes are often called a “dance-fitness party,” combining Latin music and high-energy dance steps in a vigorous cardiovascular workout. A “Zumbathon” is a Zumba fitness class that is open to the public and raises funds for a charity, organization, group or individual in need. Leading this event are Zumba instructor Sylvia Velasco along with disc jockey Sonido Vandido. Velasco approached the IPC with the Zumbathon fundraising idea

because, she said, “I had heard this organization does a lot of good for kids and I wanted to do something to help them.” The IPC helps create a safe community where the people of Dallas can live, work and play. The center works with the community to reduce injuries and deaths from car crashes, burns, falls, child abuse and other injuries. One of its successful initiatives is a car seat inspection program offered free of charge to Dallas area- residents.

Families must bring their car, child and current car seat to the inspection station. During the inspection, a trained child passenger safety technician inspects the child’s car seat for recalls, damages, expiration and proper use depending on the child’s age, height and weight. If the child is not in an appropriate seat, and if resources allow it, the IPC will replace his or her current seat with an appropriate seat for the child’s age, height and weight. In addition to the car seat inspection, parents are educated on the law, the

type of car seat that is recommended for their child, and on the proper use and installation of the car seat in the vehicle. The car seat inspection stations are held twice monthly at Parkland’s Vickery Meadow Health Center, 8224 Park Lane, Suite 130, Dallas, 75231 and at the West Dallas Multipurpose Center, 2828 Fish Trap Road, Dallas, 75212. Families can also call 214.590.4455 to make an appointment for an inspection. “We want every child to have a safe ride and we know that proper use of child safety seats saves lives,” said Shelli Stephens-Stidham, Director, IPC of Greater Dallas. “We’re grateful to Sylvia Velasco, Sonido Vandido and all the generous Zumba enthusiasts who will turn out to have a good time and support our mission of keeping kids safe.” For more information about the Zumbathon, please call 214.791.2504. Twenty children, their teachers and aides, their school principal, shot repeatedly by a 20-year-old wielding a semiautomatic assault weapon. This follows the recent movie theater attack in Aurora, Colorado and multiple college campus and high school

shootings over the past years. And daily in major cities

like Chicago, the trauma builds. This year as of Dec. 10, Chicago has witnessed 485 killed in gun violence, 125 under the age of 18. As of 2009, there were an estimated 310 million non-military firearms owned in America. The country is saturated with

guns.It’s time to take action. None

of us is safe in a nation where assault weapons are readily available. We need to revive the ban on assault weapons now.

SHARPTON: We Need More Than Just a Conversation on Race; We Need Legislative Action

Recently, we witnessed a historic moment across this country. In 100 cities from coast-to-coast, people rallied against ‘Stand Your Ground’

laws and called on the Department of Justice to investigate whether the unarmed teenager’s civil rights were violated.

With only days to organize, the National Action Network (NAN) spearheaded these demonstrations that proved how people were engaged, visibly frustrated by injustice and most importantly, knew that nothing would change going forward without a demand for substantive action.

Discussions about race are good, we need that as well, but unless those conversations are leading to legislative change, they aren’t doing much for us as a nation.

Many thought organizing a 100-city vigil in four days was unthinkable; many simply didn’t believe we could do it.

But we did. It was grassroots mobilization that brought tens of thousands out on a Saturday where the weather ranged from pouring rain to sweltering heat in different cities.

We watched men, women, children, Black, White, Brown, the elderly, the young and folks from all socio-economic backgrounds join together to rally on the side of truth, fairness and justice.

We witnessed celebrities like Beyoncé and Jay-Z lend their support in places like New York. And we saw peaceful protesters in these cities energized to take the battle for equality to the next level. Now we just need the law to catch up.

There are those that try to pull the

wool over people’s eyes. They try to twist and alter facts so that we may not get a clear picture of reality. That may work sometimes.

But sooner or later, the truth shall prevail. And sooner rather than later, the people will demand change.

Trayvon Martin was an unarmed 17-year-old. Trayvon Martin committed no

crime. Trayvon Martin went to store to buy

Skittles and an iced tea. Trayvon Martin was shot dead by a civilian who had no authority to stop him.

Trayvon Martin’s killer wasn’t arrested for weeks until after the horrible incident. Those are facts.

And facts cannot be denied no matter how they may be twisted or spun.

In another case in the state of Florida, an African-American mother by the name of Marissa Alexander fired a warning shot to scare off her abusive husband. She was denied the ability to use ‘Stand Your Ground’ in her defense and is currently serving a 20-year sentence.

How is that justice? The man who killed Trayvon, George

Zimmerman, gets to return to his old life; meanwhile, this mother of three who was protecting herself and her children is rotting in a prison cell.

That sort of blatant injustice cannot be hidden. People will see through the hypocrisy and they will accept nothing less

than our laws becoming modified so as to protect all of us equally.

We cannot live in a society that continues to give preferential treatment to some, while castigating and punishing others. That is not progress; that is where our work remains.

Whenever I speak about the fight for civil rights today, some try to attack me and say this isn’t the 1960s.

Well on August 24th, NAN and Martin Luther King III will actually be conducting a massive demonstration to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s ‘March on Washington’.

As we pay homage to his vision, some try to argue that there’s no need to rally

anymore. To compare today’s challenges to those of the ‘60s is just as disingenuous as comparing the ‘60s to the days of slavery.

Even though sitting at the back of the bus was better than being a slave, it did not mean that segregation should be accepted. Sure, times are much better now overall because so many of us fought tirelessly to make it that way, but that does not mean that we have arrived at a fully equal and fair society.

Women today earn more than their grandmothers did, but that doesn’t solve the problem of gender income disparity. Every generation makes progress, but every generation must continue the journey.

Our next step is making sure we all receive equal protection under the law.

In the aftermath of the Zimmerman verdict, we’ve seen a lot of talk. A discussion on the state of race in America is of course needed, but to reduce the worth of our lives into highbrow intellectual discourse is in itself profiling.

When young men of color in places like New York City are disproportionately stopped and frisked by the police, we need more than just talk.

When a mother of three fires a warning shot to scare off an abusive husband (whom she had a protective order against) gets 20 years in prison, we need more than just talk.

When our prisons and courtrooms are overwhelmingly filled with minorities, we need more than just talk. And when a young boy like Trayvon Martin can be shot to death while simply heading home from the store, the time for talk is over.

Now’s the time for legislative action.

JACKSON - From conversation to action: After Trayvon

President Barack Obama eloquently described the agony experienced among African-Americans from the slaying of Trayvon Martin.

He called for a more thoughtful “conversation” on race, convened not by politicians, but among families, in churches and workplaces. He suggested modest steps to provide greater training on racial profiling with police, greater efforts to figure out how to do a “better job helping young African-American men feel that they’re a full part of this society and that they’ve got pathways and avenues to succeed.”

The president’s courageous comments merit praise and consideration. But we’ve had a long conversation about race in America. No small part of American history has been devoted to that “conversation” and that struggle. And as the president said, great progress has been made.

What we need now is action. The president’s personal narrative must translate into policy. His sentiments must be turned into meaningful solutions.

Young African-American boys need positive reinforcement, but they also need adequate nutrition as infants, good education as children, and jobs once they get out of school. Unemployment among black teenagers not in school hit a

staggering 42.6 percent in June (up from a miserable 36.4 percent a year ago).

Blacks and Hispanics are clustered into low-wage, unstable jobs, and physically concentrated in impoverished ghettos and barrios, mostly in our nation’s cities.

According to the census, in 31 cities, the unemployment rate is above 40 percent. In six of them, the unemployment rate is above 50 percent, which makes these young men fodder for the prison industrial complex. This is a global disgrace.

These men need more than a conversation about them from those who already have jobs. They need a plan. Lift them up where they belong. This is good policy for Americans. Lifting them is cheaper and much more wholesome than talking about them and leaving them in the margins.

Yet, the last time we had any major effort targeted at the concentrated areas of poverty and joblessness was Lyndon Johnson’s War on Poverty in the 1960s. In fact, Johnson’s war was remarkably successful, reducing childhood poverty and providing work or training to millions. But its programs fell victim to the costs of the Vietnam War.

Now, instead of concerted programs to

provide hope and opportunity, African-Americans witness concerted attacks on the poor. North Carolina, for example, has become one of six southern states to introduce new voter ID laws since the Supreme Court’s conservative justices dismembered the Voting Rights Act.

The Senate version requires a state issued ID, disqualifies student IDs for voting. The House version cuts early voting, same

day registration and more. Of the 316,000 registered voters without a state-issued ID, 34 percent are African-American and 55 percent registered Democrats.

Since Republicans took control in North Carolina in 2012, the state has taken a hard shift to the right. So far this year, bills passed or pending by Republicans would eliminate the Earned Income Tax Credit for 900,000 low wage workers, reduce Medicaid benefits for 500,000 and federal unemployment benefits for 170,000, cut 30,000 kids out of pre-K, and transferred $90 million from public to voucher schools.

In North Carolina, people of conscience realized that a conversation about the situation wasn’t enough. The Rev. William Barber III, president of the North Carolina NAACP, helped create “Moral Mondays,” weekly protests at the state capitol to “dramatize the shameful condition of

our state.” These protests have grown dramatically, with thousands getting arrested in peaceful civil disobedience to challenge the assault on voting rights and on the poor.

This week, President Obama will travel to Knox College in Illinois to outline out his agenda on jobs and the economy once more. He will contrast “middle-out” economics, a focus on the strengthening the middle class, with the trickle-down economics of Republicans.

If we are to provide hope for young African-American boys, we need a bottom up economics, as well, targeted to provide jobs in communities scarred by high levels of unemployment and poverty.

Whatever the president’s agenda, Rev. Barber is right. Nothing will get through the obstructionists in Congress unless citizens of conscience mobilize across the nation and demand action. That will create the conversation we need to make progress once more.

Studies by theUniversity of Texas atDallas Institute of UrbanPolicy, United Way andTexas A&M are takingplace now to assess thequality of life in the SouthDallas community beforebillion dollar projectsinvolving the new DARTLight Rail and the Trinity

three institutions, a focusgroup of sorts dished ideasand findings on the surveysthat have told the story of theresidents of South Dallas.“We are measuring con-

The believer needs to remember who is in the ship with him at all times. Notice how Jesus spoke to the storm once and it obeyed. Jesus sometimes has to speak to man more than once to get him to obey. Thank God for mercy. Amen. Abraham was fully persuaded who was with him. (Roman 4:17-21) my question today is you fully per-suaded who is with you at all times. Paul was also persuaded (Roman 8:35-39) Paul was persuaded and convinced nothing in his past or present life would separate him from the love of God. When you are convinced of who is in the ship with you worry will be in your of the past. You want worry about tomorrow anymore. (Matthew 6:25-34) When you are absolutely convinced you will give it to God; you will learn to rest and trust God with all that concerns you. (Matthew 11:28-30)

A friend gave me a book to read some time ago and I find myself looking for it in earnest. Faith is a Verb. Regardless of when and how you found religion, the important thing is what you do about it. The

fact that faith is a verb and not a noun means some action is required. That action should be precipitated by an understanding that faith means acting upon that which you believe in. For example, if you say you believe and recognize who Jesus is, then do you still gossip? Do you spread rumor and innuendo? Are you forgiving of the flaws and faults of others? Do you judge and condemn people? Can you turn the other cheek?

I mean this faith as a verb thing can be demanding. It seems to be based on the principle that in the eternal, things have a much greater purpose than they seem in the here and now. Our understanding of this becomes critical to how we act. Mercy, charity and love all have a place in our everyday experiences as human beings in this physical world. If your faith is so shallow that the only thing that touches the heart is just that, what you can see and touch, then you’ve missed the point of eternal existence. Faith in the Almighty literally means claiming the more abundant life that Jesus promised.

That life did not begin the day you were born and will not end the day you die; so says every professed Christian on the face of the planet. But how you handle this short existence, goes a long way towards the quality of your afterlife, so I’m told. “All things work together for good according to the Lord and those who have been called according to His purpose.” Romans 8:28.

The consequence of faith means realizing that according to God’s

purpose, my role and yours is clear. One must act on the Word as given by Jesus Christ. One must live faith rather than quote faith. One must be a church rather than merely go to one.

So often in scripture we are reminded that Jesus was focused on a lifestyle pleasing to His Father.

He was appalled at the use of “The Law” as an excuse not to fulfill the purpose of “The Law.”

Jesus accepted any and everyone who believed in the Son of God as God. He therefore demanded appropriate behavior from apostles, elders, gentiles, Jews and sinners alike. The higher up the religious hierarchy, the more He expected you to do for and on the behalf of those yet enlightened. The more faith you professed, the more knowledge you gained, the more selfless you were to

become. I guess what I’m trying to say is

that the dynamics of faith, over time, will dictate that your lifestyle reflects the recognition of the importance of spiritual consequence, rather than physical or emotional retribution. “Therefore brother, we have an obligation…” Romans 8:12. We must live according to the Spirit within us, rather than the passions surrounding us that would otherwise seek to control and corrupt us. As faithful Christians, we should know the difference and act accordingly. “We have different gifts according to the grace given us. If a man’s gift is prophecy, let him use it in proportion to his faith. If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching let him teach; if it is encouraging let him encourage…” Romans 21:6-8. Faith is yes, a verb, active in its pursuit of meeting every person on equal grounds with Christ Jesus; resilient in its defense against the frailties of flesh and bone and honest in its understanding that life is eternal. The physical world is no more than an entrance exam to the universal existence promised to us all. Just remember Christ took the final for you and me and oh by the way, He passed with flying colors.

a man that still doesn’t seem to want me for his wife. The romance started years ago. For me, it was “love at first sight.” We dated for three years, he got married, got a divorce, and the rest of his life has been with me. Although, we never lived together. I thought this man had actually descended from Heaven when we started dating again. To me, every day was a holiday and every night was a celebration.

Gwendolyn, how can some women get any man they want while other women cannot even get one? My mother used to tell me that I was throwing away my life. But one day she said, “It’s good you are happy with him.” Yes, I have put in the years but I am not sorry. However, I am at the crossroad of deciding to quit him or continue to court. I am 66 and he is 74. I have been happy all those years and I am happy now. What do you think I should do?

Twelve area Dallas County Community College District students are people you can depend on to succeed; they demonstrate community leadership, a strong sense of purpose, a deep work ethic and clear educational goals. They have potential. They are determined and, as a result, each has received the 2012-2013 Muse Scholarship, beginning this fall.

The new recipients are:

* Mabel Balceros of Richardson, a nursing major at El Centro College; * Quy Le of Dallas, a chemical engineering major at Richland College; * Hector Martinez of Garland, a business major at Richland College; * Carly Mauldin of Roby, a fashion marketing major at El Centro College; * Ryan Newman of Dallas, a music major at Richland College; and * Guadalupe Zamorano of Carrollton, a nursing major at Brookhaven College.

Recipients are selected on the basis of their leadership potential, determination to succeed, focused educational goals and work ethic, along with proven leadership skills and academic achievement.

Created and funded by longtime DCCCD Foundation supporters Lyn and John Muse of Dallas, the Muse Scholarship Program fully supports each recipient’s costs in college – including tuition, books and additional fees – to meet the requirements of either the certification program or degree plan in which the student is enrolled. Students may receive the Muse Scholarship for up to six consecutive semesters.

“Determination and potential are key characteristics we look for in our Muse scholars,” said Dr. Wright Lassiter Jr., DCCCD chancellor and a mentor for students in this program. “Lyn and John Muse believe in those traits, as well as a strong work ethic and clear educational goals. Each recipient exhibits those characteristics, and we are excited to have them as students at the colleges in our district. They

are future leaders, and we hope to help them reach their educational and professional goals.”

Six Muse scholars who attended a DCCCD college in 2012-2013 are returning this fall: * Mussie Abraha Abed of Richardson, a nursing major who attends El Centro College; * Ernesto Banuelos of Irving, a North Lake College student who is studying both business administration and engineering; * Martha Barajas of Garland; also a nursing major at El Centro College; * Courtney Belcher of Mesquite, who is studying nursing at both El Centro and Eastfield colleges; * Chukwuka John Umeojiako of

Addison, who is majoring in psychology at Brookhaven College; and * Stephan Sawin of Glenn Heights, a business major at Mountain View College.

Sales Tax Holiday

The Texas Legislature established the August Sales Tax Holiday to provide individuals and families a tax free holiday while purchasing school supplies for their children. This year's tax free weekend is from Friday, August 9th until Sunday, August 11th. As in the past, the law exempts most clothing, footwear, school supplies, and backpacks priced below $100.

The Sales Tax Holiday has allowed families with school-aged children to make the most of their dollars by saving them about $8 on every $100 spent. The following items listed below, provided by the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts, will not be taxed.
