Bulldogs host the fourth-annual Union State Bank Magic City Classic featuring gamesagainst both Birmingham-Southern and UAB at Bulldog Field.

Samford (7-6) is scheduled to face off against the Birmingham-Southern Panthers (6-7)at 1:30 p.m., on Saturday followed by a 4 p.m. matchup against the UAB Blazers (8-13).Birmingham-Southern and UAB will open the competition with an 11 a.m. contest.

Samford enters Saturday's competition looking to build upon its solid 3-1 performance atthe 2005 Comfort Inn Mercer Classic last week. After being held to 15 runs and 33 hits intheir first nine games of the season, the Bulldogs exploded for 25 runs and 34 hits in onlyfour games at the three-day tournament held in Macon, Ga.

Birmingham-Southern heads into this weekend's competition with a 6-7 overall record onthe season, but has recorded all seven of its losses in its previous eight games.

UAB has also been on a slide as of late as the Blazers are in the midst of a six-game losingstreak. Last week, UAB took part in the 2005 Stanford Invitational and played competi-tively against some of the nation's top teams.

tor Joey Mullins and assistant director Zac Schrieber. Intern Tootie Taylor alsoplays an instrumental role in the day-to-day operations of the department andhandles volleyball, track and field, cross country and both men’s and women’stennis.

Schrieber serves as the primary contact for men’s basketball, women’s soccerand softball, while Mullins handles football, women’s basketball and baseball.

All members of the media working Samford softball games must request cre-dentials from Schrieber. Early requests are helpful, enabling media to receiveparking passes prior to the game.

WAGNER’S WALK-OOFF GRAND SLAM DEFEATS MSVU, 9-55Samford University freshman, Meghan Wagner, blasted a ninth-inning grand slam to lift the Bulldogs to

a thrilling 9-5 victory over Mississippi Valley State on Feb. 26, at the Comfort Inn Classic hosted by MercerUniversity in Macon, Ga. The victory was Samford's second of the day after the Bulldogs defeated SouthernMiss, 5-2, in the first game.

With the pair of wins, Samford improved to a 7-6 overall record on the season. Mississippi Valley Statetook a one-run lead in the third inning of game two, but Samford rebounded to take the lead in the thirdinning and held it until the seventh when MVSU tied things up to go into extra innings.

The teams battled back and forth in the eighth inning and Mississippi Valley State went up by a run againin the top of the ninth frame.

In the bottom of the ninth, Samford's Kelly Smith made it to first on an error when she attempted to laydown a sacrifice bunt to send base runner Liz Pearse to third. Shelley Stanley then drew a walk to load thebases and Bethany Weisser put the ball in play to score Pearse, tie the game and eventually loaded the basesfor Wagner.

With two strikes against Samford's highly-touted freshman from Chico, Calif., Wagner launched her sec-ond career grand slam to win the game for the Bulldogs, 9-5. The blast was her second grand slam of thetournament and second in as many days.

The Bulldogs registered 12 hits in game two against MVSU. Trisha Holman went 4-for-5 with two RBIand Weisser finished 2-for-3 with one run and an RBI. Junior Emilee Lewis started the game in the circlefor the Bulldogs, but left with a no decision.

Samford's junior from Vacaville, Calif., pitched seven innings, allowed four hits, three runs, walked twoand struck out three. Susanna Meyer relieved Lewis in the eighth inning with the game tied at 3-3.

Meyer hurled the final two innings to take the victory, allowing three hits and two unearned runs. TheBulldogs' sophomore from Davie, Fla., is now 4-3 on the season including the victory she earned earlier inthe day against Southern Miss.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK - - MEGHAN WAGNERSamford’s freshman catcher Meghan Wagner led the Bulldogs to a 3-1 overall record at the 2005 Comfort

Inn Mercer Classic last weekend as she finished the three-day tournament with a stellar .571 batting average,eight RBI, four runs, two grand slams and an astounding 1.429 slugging percentage. In the first game of thetournament, she powered a deep grand slam home run that accounted for her first collegiate hit in a 9-1 vic-tory over Marist on Friday. Wagner then recorded her second grand slam of the weekend on Saturday as sheregistered a walk-off effort in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat Mississippi Valley State, 9-5. She cur-rently leads the Bulldogs in both home runs (2) and RBI (8) this season.

B U L L D O G B I T E SBULLDOGS TEARING IT UP IN TOURNEY PLAY

Samford currently holds a 6-3 record in tournament competition this season and will look to con-

tinue its solid play this weekend. Heading into the 2005 Union State Bank Magic City Classic, the

Bulldogs own a 7-6 overall record on the season with six of those seven wins coming during tourna-

ment play. In the 2005 Lion Classic hosted by Southeastern Louisiana in Hammond, La., Samford

finished the two-day event with a 3-2 record. The Bulldogs defeated Alcorn State, 5-1, Mississippi

Valley State, 5-3, and Southern, 2-1, but fell against Southeastern La., 1-0, and Louisiana Tech, 2-0.

Last week, Samford went 3-1 at the 2005 Comfort Inn Mercer Classic held in Macon, Ga.

SAMFORD vs . UAB : THE FACTSUAB holds a 9-4 advantage in its all-time series against Samford. The cross-town rival-

ry began during the 2000 season and the Blazers won six of the first seven contests. Sincehead coach Beanie Ketcham took control of the Bulldogs’ softball program in 2003,Samford has improved to 3-4 against UAB. The Bulldogs won last season’s finale, 4-0.
