The 100th Season

March 2-4, 1961 / Raleigh, NCFirst-round byeWake Forest 98, Maryland 76Wake Forest 96, Duke 81

The Atlantic Coast Conference was in its eighth yearand Wake Forest was still searching for its first leaguechampionship.

The efforts of Murray Greason, the all-time winningestcoach in Demon Deacon basketball history, were notenough in the 1950s.

Greason turned the coaching reins over to his assistantBones McKinney prior to the 1957-58 season andMcKinney guided the Deacs to a Dixie Classic title twoyears later. Yet in the championship contest of that sea-son's ACC Tournament (1960), Wake Forest fell to Duke,63-59.

Many of the leading characters from the 1960 clubreturned the next year, though, and expectations werehigh for a return to the tourney's final day.

Wake Forest enjoyed another good regular season, compiling a 15-10 record against an extremely difficultschedule. The Deacons finished second in the '61 ACCrace with an 11-3 mark, one game behind North Carolina, which won 12 of its 14 league outings.

The Tar Heels would not be a factor in the Tournament, though. They were serving an NCAA probation and didnot participate. That left seven member schools and gaveWake Forest the number-one seed, which in that year wasespecially beneficial since it included a first-round bye andguaranteed the Deacons a free ticket to the semifinals.

In the semifinal round, Wake met Maryland, an oppo-nent it had defeated by 12 and nine points during the reg-ular season. The third meeting would be no different; infact, the Deacs would dominate the Terrapins and wingoing away, 98-76, behind the outstanding play of LenChappell.

Chappell scored 34 points, hitting 10-of-16 field goalattempts and 14-of-17 free throws, and grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds. Dave Wiedeman contributed 20 points

and nine rebounds. The championship game figured to be much more chal-

lenging. Wake Forest would have to beat its 1960 neme-sis Duke in order to claim the crown and the two teamshad split their two meetings earlier in the year.

But this time the Deacons were not to be denied. Theybroke open an early 13-13 tie with six straight points andled by nine, 42-33, at halftime. The lead would grow to asmany as 20 in the second half and Wake eventuallyrecorded its first ACC championship by a 96-81 marginover the Blue Devils.

"Everybody was in the flow, and in the second half wegot away from them pretty good," McKinney recalled later."We just felt like we knew we were going to win thatgame."

Actually the most distressing time of the entire champi-onship experience in 1961 came at halftime of the titlecontest. A fired-up group of Deacons burst out of theirlocker room in N.C. State's Reynolds Coliseum only to seeteam co-captain Alley Hart knocked into a glass watercooler located near the dressing room door. The coolerbroke and a piece of glass cut Hart's hand.

Hart obviously was not his usual effective self, scoringonly six points. Chappell, though, displayed his ACCPlayer of the Year form for the second straight day, scor-ing 33 points and collecting 14 rebounds to lead all play-ers in both categories.

Billy Packer, Hart's running mate in the Deacon back-court, scored 16 points, while bruising forward Bill Hullachieved a double-double with 12 points and 12rebounds.

Back on the Wake Forest campus in Winston-Salem,the student body celebrated with a vigor worthy of theaccomplishment. One ambitious celebrant even scaledthe front of Wait Chapel and covered the word "Wait" witha sign of his own, "Len."

Chappell was named the Tournament’s Most ValuablePlayer and was joined on the all-tournament first team byPacker. Wiedeman was named to the all-tourney secondteam.

earned them the No. 1 seed.Wake cruised by opening round opponent Virginia,

81-58, behind 18 points from both Packer and Chappell. The next night the Deacons trailed South Carolina athalftime by two (43-41), but rallied behind the brilliantplay of their All-American to register an 88-75 triumph.Chappell tallied 38 points in that contest, leading agroup of four different Deacs in double figures.

Wake Forest's surprising foe in the title game, though, was Clemson, which had upset Duke in the semifinals,77-72. Coach Press Maravich had his Tigers utilizing acombination man-to-man and zone defense called the"Junto," and it worked for a while even against thefavored Deacons.

The defending champions trailed, 19-17, but then hit11 of their last 13 field goal attempts of the first half toroll to a 43-28 lead at intermission. Upset-mindedClemson would draw no closer than 12 during the sec-ond half as the Atlantic Coast Conference trophy onceagain went back to Winston-Salem with the Deacons.Final score -- Wake 77, Clemson 66.

Chappell, the Tournament MVP for the second con-secutive year, once again was the scoring leader with 31points, while Packer added 21. Both were named to theall-tournament first team, while Wiedeman was awardedsecond-team honors for the second season in a row.

"We were the best team," Packer says in looking backat that period in his career. "We really had the best teamfor three years running, including 1960 and 1961. Wewere just supposed to win."

Chappell agrees with him, but recalls that theDeacons of 1962 really did not fully appreciate whatthey had accomplished by capturing back-to-back titles.

"We knew it was ourjob to win that ACCTournament," Chappellsays. "It was just a mat-ter of course, but at thattime the ACC didn'thave the long historythat it now has. Wereally didn't know whatwe had achieved."

The Demon Deaconsof 1962, of course, wenton to win three straightgames in the NCAATournament, includingovertime decisions overYale and St. Joseph's.Their third postseasonvictory over Villanovatook them into the FinalFour where they metthat same Ohio Stateteam that had beatenthem at the beginning ofthe 1961-62 season.

The Buckeyes did itagain, but Wake Forestbounced back to downUCLA for third place inthe national tourneyand finish the yearwhere it was picked inthat preseason pollmonths before.

Winning the first one in 1961 was hard enough, butrepeating as ACC champions? The idea certainly wasnot out of the question. After all, the Demon Deaconshad eight lettermen returning, led by All-American LenChappell, as well as backcourt ace Billy Packer andsparkplug Dave Wiedeman.

Add the towering Bob Woollard and sophomorestandout Frank Christie and veteran coach BonesMcKinney had a team that most felt could challenge notonly for ACC honors, but perhaps even the nationalchampionship as well.

And in the ‘61-62 preseason poll, there indeed wasWake Forest, voted as the third-ranked team in thecountry. Only Ohio State (#1) and Cincinnati (#2) werepicked higher.

But preseason projections do not a successful teammake, and the Deacs struggled early that year. A dis-appointing 22-point loss to Ohio State in Winston-Salemin December began a string of four losses in five games. At one point in January, the Wake Forest record was anunimpressive 9-8. That mark included two losses toDuke, which was the prime contender to replace theDeacons as league champs.

However, McKinney kept working with his veteranclub and it roared into the 1962 ACC Tournament on asix-game winning streak, a late-season surge thatimproved the Deacons' conference record to 12-2 and

March 9-12, 1995 / Greensboro, NCWake Forest 87, Duke 70Wake Forest 77, Virginia 68Wake Forest 82, N. Carolina 80 (ot)

The sellout crowd of 23,311 was standing in anticipa-tion as the teams broke their respective huddles for thefinal 21.7 seconds of the 1995 ACC Tournament champi-onship game.

Wake Forest and North Carolina had already battled toa deadlock through 44 minutes and were tied 80-80 inovertime. And while the issue was still in doubt, therewas no secret as to who was going to take the decidingshot -- Randolph Childress.

After all, his performance to that point is somethingpeople still refer to with great admiration today. Hescored a career-high 40 points against Duke in the open-ing round, and then added 30 more in the Deacons'semifinal win over Virginia. He was at 35 when the ballwas inbounded for Wake Forest's final possession.

Even though North Carolina did its best to keep himfrom getting the ball, Childress got open and sliced downthe lane for a floating 12-foot jumper that swishedthrough the basket and sent the Demon Deacon faithfulinto a frenzy. Those two points broke LennieRosenbluth's 38-year old tournament record of 106points by one and gave Wake Forest its first ACC crownsince 1962.

North Carolina had four seconds left and made themost of it. Jerry Stackhouse launched a three-pointerand Pearce Landry had a desperation tip at the buzzer, but neither dropped. That set off a postgame celebrationwhich ended with Childress being named the most valu-able player and Wake Forest gaining a No. 1 seed in theNCAA Tournament.

Former Deacon and current television analyst BillyPacker called it one of the greatest individual perform-ances he had ever seen in an ACC Tournament. Packerwasn't alone in those sentiments as scores of observersshook their heads in near disbelief of what Childress hadachieved.

It started in the opening round when the top-seededDeacons fell behind Duke 31-13 in the first 12 minutes.

After a Wake Forest timeout, Childress began to asserthimself and exploded for 20 of his 27 first half points overthe next eight minutes without missing a shot.

He made 10 consecutive field goal attempts to closeout the half, which included five three pointers, and gavethe Deacons an improbable one-point lead at the inter-mission.

He sent the Blue Devils running for cover in the sec-ond half as Wake Forest extended its lead and settled foran 87-70 victory. Childress finished with 40 points on 13-of-18 shooting, tying him with North Carolina's CharlieScott for the fifth-highest single-game point total in tour-nament history.

Virginia proved equally tough in the semifinal as WakeForest started slowly for the second straight day andtrailed the Cavaliers 36-28 at halftime. Childress andTim Duncan stepped up in the final 20 minutes, howev-er, combining for 35 of Wake Forest's 49 points to securea 77-68 victory.

Childress finished the game with 30 points, whichincluded six more three pointers, while Duncan tallied 20points, 14 rebounds and six blocked shots. Ricky Peralhad his best game of the tournament, connecting on 5-of-9 field goal attempts for 13 points.

The championship game against North Carolina pro-vided more of the same Childress heroics. He had 15 ofWake Forest's 33 first-half points, and despite trailing byfive at the break, the Deacs showed no signs of slowingdown.

When Childress netted a pair of free throws with 1:03to play, it gave the Deacons a 73-69 lead, butStackhouse made one-of-two free throws and then astunning three-point jumper with 4.5 seconds left to sendthe game into overtime.

All that did, though, was give Childress an even biggerstage to perform his magic.

Travis Banks takes part in the 1995 championship celebration.

March 7-10, 1996 / Greensboro, NCWake Forest 70, Virginia 60Wake Forest 68, Clemson 60Wake Forest 75, Georgia Tech 74

Fans in the Greensboro Coliseum must have felt atouch of deja vu as they sat in their seats during the finalminute of the 1996 ACC Tournament championshipgame between second-seeded Wake Forest and top-seeded Georgia Tech.

After holding a seemingly insurmountable 11-pointlead with two minutes and 23 seconds remaining, theDemon Deacons watched Georgia Tech mount a furiousrally. Just like the year before when North Carolinacame back from a four-point deficit in the final minute toforce overtime, the Yellow Jackets were looking to dothe same thing.

Wake Forest's lead was down to 75-74 with 18 sec-onds remaining when Stephon Marbury came downcourt with a chance to put Georgia Tech in the lead. With under five seconds to play he drove to the rightbaseline, but found Rusty LaRue on his hip and TimDuncan running at him. His off-balance jumper hit thetop corner of the backboard and caromed to StevenGoolsby, who cradled it with two seconds to play.

Even though Goolsby missed a pair of free throws,Drew Barry's desperation heave from midcourt failed todrop, allowing Wake Forest to celebrate its secondstraight conference championship and become the firstschool in 14 years to win consecutive titles.

For most of the afternoon it appeared as though theDeacons were going to coast to victory. They dashedout of the gate to a 14-3 lead and increased it to 19-5after only six minutes of action. The Yellow Jacketsmade a run of their own and closed to within five pointsat 29-24 with just over five minutes to play, but Wake

Forest exploded for10 straight points toclose out the halfwith a 39-24advantage.

The DemonDeacon lead grewto 18, but the tideturned when TonyRutland, who had15 points on theday, injured hisknee while drivingto the basket with14 minutes to play.As a result, the reli-able LaRuestepped in andfilled the point-guard slot for thefirst time in hiscareer and kept theoffense in sync.

Even thoughGeorgia Tech whit-tled away at WakeForest's lead,LaRue and TimDuncan combinedfor 15 points over a

seven-minute stretchto keep the advan-tage in double digitsat 71-60. The YellowJacket pressure final-ly forced a couple ofturnovers, whichcombined withmissed Deacon freethrows, allowed Techto creep even closerand create an excit-ing finish.

And whereas the1995 Tournamentbelonged toRandolph Childress, this one was all TimDuncan's. The juniorAll-American set atournament record formost rebounds with56, which included achampionship gamerecord 22 againstGeorgia Tech.Duncan was a unani-mous selection forthe Everett CaseAward as the ACCTournament MVP andwas later recognizedas the 1996 ACCPlayer of the Year.

Besides being a force on the boards, he led theDeacons with 27 points, six assists, and four blockedshots in the title game. After Rutland's 15 points, LaRuefollowed with 14 and Ricky Peral with 10.

Wake Forest's ACC Tournament run started againstVirginia. The Deacons broke open a 37-36 game bygoing on a 22-7 run over a nine-minute stretch en routeto a 70-60 victory and avenged a regular-season lossfrom one week earlier. Duncan led the way with 19points and 15 rebounds, while Rutland and Peralchipped in 13 points apiece.

Most figured Wake Forest would face North Carolinain the semifinals, but Clemson upset the Tar Heels in theopening round and looked to make it two straight byupending the Demon Deacons. That bid fell short, how-ever, as Duncan had another outstanding night with 22points, 19 rebounds, and four assists in a 68-60 win.

Wake Forest was in control most of the night, leadingby 11 at halftime thanks to 13 points from Rutland. TheTigers got as close as four with one minute and 51 sec-onds to play, but Rutland knocked down a three-pointerto ice the win.

Rutland finished the game with 20 points whileGoolsby provided a spark off the bench with 11.

Wake Forest's hot shooting continued in the titlegame as it blistered the nets at a championship gamerecord 63 percent clip, making 29-of-46 field goalattempts. The Demon Deacons were even better frombehind the arc as they connected on 9-of-14 three-pointtries (64.3%).

The championship was the fourth in Wake Forest his-tory and represented the second time it had won back-to-back titles.Duncan, Wake made it two straight in ‘96.

Rutland scored 15 points in the finals.
