TROFEEVERBOD BELAGLIK

Indien lugrederye volledig ingelig was oor maatreëls

wat deur geloofwaardige, internasionale bewarings-

organisasies soos Cites (Internasionale Konvensie

BAN ON TROPHIES ABSURD

Had airlines been fully informed about regulations laid down by credible, inter-

national conservation organisations such as Cites (Convention on Internation-

al Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) to prevent trade in

endangered species, they would not have placed such an absurd ban on the

transport of legal hunting trophies. Stopping transport of legal hunting trophies

will not at all contribute towards “eliminating illegal trade and transportation of

hunting trophies worldwide and to save the wildlife heritage”.

It is amazing that the airlines concerned are not aware that, although Cites

prohibits trade in elephant and rhino products, following thorough research

on the effect thereof, limited permits are annually issued to undertake such

hunts, which results in legal trophies.

This issue is of extreme interest to game ranchers supplying the product,

as well as to hunters, who contribute a lot to the success of game produc-

tion.

Endangered species can breed sustainably, as South Africa’s success in

saving the white rhino has clearly demonstrated, where hunting of endan-

gered animals has added commercial value, which has contributed to game

ranchers investing in the industry and which has effected growth in numbers

in an astronomical way.

Luckily, our department of environmental affairs is well informed and

aware of the value of game production for our country, and of the importance

of hunting in the synergy between production, hunting and conservation.

We trust that the department will discuss the issue straight from the shoul-

der with the airlines concerned and that the

absurd ban will be lifted.
