This newsletter contains IMPORTANT FAIR INFORMATION AND FAIR CHANGES FOR 2017 please read it carefully. Additional information before the fair will be posted to our website and sent out by e-mail updates!! Please check the Extension website often!

Taking animals off the fairgrounds after fair – Again, this year market: steer, lamb, hogs and goat exhibitors will have the option to send their drop animal(s) to resale, butcher, or to take the animal(s) home. The animal(s) must be signed up for release through the current drop slip system and slips turned into the fair board by the drop deadline printed on the drop slip. The animal(s) will be removed on Thursday night of the fair after approximately 11:00PM. If taken home, only the exhibitor or their representative may remove the animal from the fairgrounds. They will need to have the animal signed out by a fair board member.

Fair Enrollment—According to our records you have signed up for 4-H or FFA projects that you may wish to exhibit at the 2017 Gallia County Junior Fair. In order to exhibit at fair, please complete the enclosed Fair Registration form. Registration forms must be returned to the Gallia County Extension Office by 4:30 PM on July 5th in order to bring your project to the fair! This includes ALL animal projects, general projects and Cloverbuds!! Late Fees—any forms received after July 5th will be stamped as late entries and will only be accepted if space is available. The following late fees will be charged: All Activity Building and Small Animal projects will be charged a $5.00 flat fee. All Large Animal projects will be charged $10.00 per project for the first 10 working days, then $25.00 per project after that date. Completing Your Forms –Reminder: all parents or guardians must sign each entry form so please check over the forms to ensure accuracy. Changes cannot be made once the form is submitted.

MONDAY July 17th, TUESDAY July 18th, AND WEDNESDAY July 19th!!! Demonstrations- Demonstrations will take place on Monday, July 17th beginning at 9:00 AM at the C.H. McKenzie Ag. Center (Extension office). Call the office to schedule a time slot. Food, Clothing, Cats & Pockets —judging will be held on Tuesday, July 18th! The judging will take place at the Extension Office with Food projects & Cake Decorating in the morning, Clothing projects after lunch and Pocket Pets and Cats in late afternoon. The Fashion Show will also take place this day. Please see enclosed schedules! ALL Non-Livestock/General Projects - will be judged on Wednesday, July 19th, all projects (except livestock, field crops, food, clothing, cats & pocket pets) will be judged at the fairgrounds in the activity building and Bill Gray Pavilion. **All first place county winners will be eligible to go to the State Fair with their project, if they meet project and age requirements in a State eligible category. Winners will be posted in the Activities building at the close of each

judging schedule. All winners will need to be registered by Friday, July 21st for State Fair. Please discuss your child’s plans about competing at the State fair level before judging should they win, this will help us meet this very

tight window of registration.

General Projects: There will be a few changes in the “Fair check in process” for this year’s early judging. Please be sure to read the enclosed judging schedules carefully. We will be asking exhibitors to leave their projects in the activity building after judging so that we can eliminate this step during “Fair check-in” on Sunday July 30th. There will be some exceptions: large projects or projects that need care like flowers or those deemed by the judge to be too fragile to remain in the building for the extra few days. Our goal is to have the building almost complete at the end of the July 19th judging!! Exceptions can be requested by exhibitor.

BREEDING SHOW—The Gallia County Junior Fair Breeding Shows will be held on Saturday, July 22nd. The show line up for 2017 is: The Llama show starting at 4:30 PM with the Livestock Queen contest beginning at 5:30 pm. The Breeding Goat Show which includes: Dairy, Meat, Pack and Fiber goats will start at 6:00 PM or immediately following the Livestock Queen crowning. The Breeding Sheep show will start at 7:00 PM with the Breeding Swine show starting at 8:00 PM or immediately following the sheep show. Check-in for all of these species will begin one hour before show time. All sheep and goats must have scrapie I.D.’s., swine will need ear notches. All registered animals must show registration papers at time of check in. Photo copies will be accepted. Animals must be registered in exhibitors name, family name, farm name or partnership. Please be sure to clean out stalls and leave them as you found them after show; with our reduced fair workers this year this is very important!

B Special Needs Camp –June 12 - 14 for children ages 8-18; Fee: $80 for youth & $40 for Beginner (3rd, 4th & 5th Grade) Camp - June 15 – 18; Fee: $136 (4-H rate) $140 (non-4-H rate) Jr. High (6th, 7th & 8th Grade) Camp - June 8 – 11; Fee: $136 (4-H rate) $140 (non-4-H rate) Teen Camp - June 19 – 22; Fee: $140 (4-H rate) $145 (non-4-H rate) Registrations limited with deadlines beginning May 1st (STEM camp) & May 25th other camps

The Dog Show will be held on Saturday, July 22nd beginning at 9 AM at the Bill Gray Pavilion. This show will include “You and Your Dog”, Obedience, Agility, Showmanship, Rally and “All about Dogs” Projects. Pet Pals and Dog Achievement Program will be judged during the small animal judging on July 18th. Please watch for the dog letter to be mailed directly to you with more specific information.

All Market Animals must have a Drug Use Notification Form (DUNF) turned in at the fair weigh in. This mandatory form is a written statement that verifies that an animal is drug-free or identifies the level of drug residue at the time of show/sale. Both youth exhibitor and parent must sign the DUNF. These forms were reviewed during Quality Assurance. It is extremely important they be completed correctly, if you are not sure how to complete this form or have questions, PLEASE ASK FOR HELP. Invalid forms can lead to disqualifications, loss of awards, and suspension from showing at the county fair, as well as fines. DUNF forms will be available SUNDAY MORNING during check in at the fair; please take time to review your form and ensure it is filled out correctly. This form must be completed and submitted at the weigh-in by all exhibitors showing, market: hogs, sheep, goats and steer. MORE INFORATION REGARDING QA PRACTICES AND DUNF FORMS CAN BE FOUND IN YOUR MARKET ANIMAL RESOURCE AND RECORD BOOKS, IF YOU HAVE NOT GOTTEN YOUR BOOKS, PLEASE BE SURE TO GET THEM SOON. Books may be purchased at the Extension Office between 8:00AM and 4:30 PM Monday-Friday.

Quality Assurance: Exhibitors if you have NOT had QA training or tested out for 2017, there are only a few more QA trainings left in the STATE! You cannot show any beef, dairy, swine, lamb, goat, poultry or rabbit projects without proof of QA training or test out! Jackson County has one last makeup QA training on June 21st from 3-4 PM at the Extension office with a $10 late fee charge. You must call 740-286-5044 to register for this LAST QA training!!

FAIR ANIMAL CHECK IN PROCEEDURES for July 30th Fair check day All Market Animal Exhibitors: The Exhibitor or designated representative must be present at all weigh-ins. Please have your completed DUNF form and weigh-in fee of $5.00 cash, per animal on hand when crossing scales. There will be a short barn meeting for all market exhibitors around 4:15 PM in the show ring, please listen for the barn meeting to be announced. Swine Exhibitors- the Market Hog show will be held on Tuesday August 1st with the sale on Saturday, August 5th at 9:00AM. Market Swine may check-in on Sunday from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The weigh-in will begin promptly at 6:00 PM. Sheep Exhibitors –the Market Lamb show will be held on Wednesday, August 2nd at 3:00 PM with showmanship and show starting at 6:00pm. The sale will be on Friday August 4th at 9:15 AM. Sheep must check-in between 1:00 –4:00 PM, on Sunday. The fair vet will be checking sheep in the trailers as they arrive at the fairgrounds. No sheep will be unloaded until cleared by the fair vet. Weigh-in for sheep will start around 4:30 PM. Beef Exhibitors – The Market Steer show will be held Thrusday, August 3rd at 8:30 AM with the sale on Friday, August 4th at 11:00 AM. All Beef animals may check-in on Sunday from 8:00 -4:00 PM. Steer weigh-in will start following the goats, around 5:00 PM. The Feeder Calf show will be Thursday at 2:00 PM. Dairy Exhibitors – The Dairy show will be held on Thursday, August 3rd at 4:00 PM with Dairy Feeders also showing Thursday at 2:00 PM at the end of the Feeder Calf show. All dairy animals may check-in on Sunday from 8:00 -4:00 PM.

FAIR ANIMAL CHECK IN PROCEEDURES for July 30th Fair check day continued… Goat Exhibitors – ONLY MARKET GOATS AND MINIATURE GOATS COME TO THE FAIR. BREEDING MEAT AND DAIRY GOATS ALONG WITH PACK GOATS AND FIBER GOATS SHOULD BE SHOWN AT THE BREEDING SHOW BEFORE THER FAIR- JULY 22nd. ** ALL Goats coming to the fair should unload and be checked in at the Dairy Barn between 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM. ALL GOATS MUST have a scrapie tag and these tags will be recorded at check-in. Please do not put goats in stalls until checked in! Miniature breeds- will show Monday, July 31st at 1:00 PM (this will be the first goat show this year). Market Goats – the show will be held Monday, July 31st at 3:00 PM (this will be the second goat show this year). Meat Goats will be weighed-in at 4:30 PM. Goat Sale – The Goat sale will be held Friday, August 4th at 12:00 PM. The number of goats to be sold will be dependent on the number of exhibitors (1-20 exhibitors - sell top ten, 21-25 exhibitors - sell top 15, 26 exhibitors or more - sell top 20). All other goats will be drop animals. (Please note only one goat per child may be sold regardless of placing and there will be no bumping into top placements. To allow as many kids to sell as possible, if your first goat is placed you have the option to drop your second entry allowing another exhibitor the chance to place and sell.) Awards - Breeding, Pack, Fiber and Miniature Goats ONLY - will their receive placement awards at the Holzer Clinic Small Animal Awards Show on Friday, August 4th, at the Bill Gray Pavilion. Market Goats will receive awards during their show like the other market species; they are NOT included in the

Holzer Awards.SMALL ANIMAL and Horse CHECK-IN Breeding and Market Rabbits– will be checked in at the dairy barn from 8:30 AM to 11:00 AM on Sunday, July 30th. Rabbits will be checked for mites, lice, and other health concerns. For the safety of all the rabbits, any animal found to have these issues will not be allowed to stay at the fairgrounds and will not exhibit. Pet Rabbits Do not check in on Sunday—Pet Rabbits do not stay at the fair. They only come the day of the judging then go home. Exhibitors still plan to pick up their fair pass on Sunday. Pet Rabbits are judged on Wednesday, August 2nd at the Fair at 9:00 AM at the Bill Gray Pavilion. Poultry - (Ducks, Geese, Chickens or Turkey) will check in at the dairy barn from 8:30 to 11:00 AM. All chickens will need to have a blood test at check-in unless they were bought through the OSU Extension office, have a certificate of health from the hatcher and WERE NOT around any other birds. All Turkey’s will be required to show a certificate of Health from the hatchery and cannot be exposed to any other birds. Cats & Pocket Pets DO NOT COME TO FAIR- will be judged on July 18th, see the judging schedule for time & location. Please bring display poster to judging to be displayed at fair. Dogs – DO NOT COME TO FAIR - will be judged will be held July 22nd starting at 9:00 AM, watch for dog letters in the mail. Dog posters should be exhibited at the county fair to receive your fair pass, watch for more detailed instructions in your letter regarding fair pass pick up. Horse Exhibitors– All horses should be in place by 4:00 PM on Sunday, July 30th. At this time there is no specific unloading time set for horses.

Fair Passes– 4-H members exhibiting at least one project at the fair will receive one free fair pass; (this pass does not include rides). 4-Hers who do not complete a project or who do not meet their club attendance requirements will NOT receive a pass. Passes must be picked up on Fair Check-in Sunday, July 30th. Lost passes cannot be replaced. **Cloverbud members must complete a registration form for fair and pick up their pass during check-in. 4-H Clubs should plan to have a Cloverbud booth exhibit at the fair to ensure all their Cloverbud members qualify for passes. Advisor Passes – Approved 4-H Advisors in good standing will receive one free pass which can be picked up at the Fair Board office on Saturday July 29th from 8:00 PM -9:00 PM or on Sunday July 30th from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM. ** In good standing - completed all steps to be an approved advisor and all club paperwork is up to date and complete, with the Extension Office. This includes club charters, yearly summary, EINs and e-post cards! Season Passes—4-H Clubs have the opportunity to sale season fair passes again this year. Passes cost $28.00 each with clubs earning $1.00 for each pass sold if paid by one club check. Season passes are available at the Extension office and can be sold until July 30th. All money and unsold tickets must be turned into the fair board office by 9:00 PM on Sunday, July 30th. Please pay for tickets sold with a club check. FAIR PASSES – Like last year we will have two locations to pick up fair passes Exhibitors with animal projects only - will pick up your fair pass in the Dairy Barn at the small animal end of the barn starting at 12:30 - until 4:00 PM. (These projects include all beef, dairy, swine, sheep, goat, cat, dog, rabbit, pocket pet, chicken, duck, turkey, and horse!) **Livestock Parking Passes will be available at the Dairy Barn location only: All large livestock exhibitors (1 per family) may receive a parking pass that will allow them to park in designated parking areas in the main parking lot behind the stage. Fifteen minute barn passes will also be issued until 10:45AM. All vehicles must be off the fairgrounds no later than 11:00 AM each day. Fifteen minute passes will only be issued at Gate 3, (beside track). The purpose for issuing these passes is to allow exhibitors to enter the barn area to unload feed and supplies. Failure to obey the time limits will result in loss of passes and vehicles being towed. Exhibitors showing both animal & general projects or those with just general projects - will pick your fair pass up at the 4-H Activities building on Sunday, July 30th from 12:30 – 4:00 PM. *Most projects will be left at early judging and will not need to be “checked back in” on Sunday however, those projects that are too big, too fragile or too valuable to be held at the time of judging WILL need to be brought back and checked in on Sunday. Also the non-4-H projects such as Hay, Corn, Soy Beans, and Specialty Crops will also need to be checked in on Sunday as well. By keeping most of the projects after judging our hope is to cut down on the amount of projects that need to be re-checked in and to have displays and posters already in place upon the conclusion of early judging. Cloverbud pass pick up- will be at the 4-H Activities Building Sunday July 30th on the Cloverbud end of the Activity Building from 12:30-4:00 PM.

Gallia County 4-H 6 OSU Extension Gallia County

Additional General project requirement for the Gallia County Junior Fair are listed in the Gallia County Junior Fair Book. These will also be made available on-line at www.gallia.osu.edu. Projects will be released following the Holzer Awards show on Friday night. Projects and club booths should be removed before noon on Saturday August 5th, projects left behind will not be supervised after noon on Saturday and will be thrown away at the end of fair Sunday morning. General Project Information- General Projects will be judged on Tuesday and Wednesday July 18th-19th. See the ENCLOSED JUDGING SCHEDULE for individual project judging times. A list of what you need to bring to judging is included in the 2017 Fair Book, which is now available at the Extension office. Be sure to bring your complete 4-H project book to judging, this includes cat and pocket pet judging. Projects require some type of display or board that can be exhibited during the fair. This includes dog, cat and pocket pet projects. Projects judged without books or without required displays will forfeit premiums. Repeated project displays from previous year, school science or history day projects or projects which show little or no effort will also forfeit premiums. Food and Nutrition Projects: will be on Tuesday the July 18th in the conference room of the C.H. McKenzie Agriculture Center. Please enter through the back doors. For food projects you should have a 3 ring binder (which you will leave at judging), your project book, a menu containing at least one food from your project and at least one homemade food item from the project to be judged. Clothing Projects: will be on Tuesday the July 18th in the conference room of the C.H. McKenzie Agriculture Center. All clothing participants must participate in the style review to be eligible to receive a rosette or trophy. The style review will be held the same day as judging at approximately 3:30 PM, at the Bill Gray Pavilion, located in the center of the Gallia County Fairgrounds. All Clothing projects should bring a completed project book, and item of clothing from the project. Clothing will be worn during fashion show. Woodworking: All woodworking exhibitors will be required to participate in a skills assessment during judging. This will be conducted at the Bill Gray Pavilion. Skill-a-thon scores are combined with interview scores for final woodworking placements. Prizes are also given for top skill-a-thon performers complements of Carpenter’s Union Local 650. Awards: All general projects are eligible to win special cash awards from Holzer Health System. Awards are given out on Friday of the fair beginning at 6:00 PM at the Bill Gray Pavilion, following the Small Animal Holzer Health System Awards which begins at 5:00 PM. Exhibitors winning first, second or third place are eligible for cash awards. The exhibitor or a representative must be present at the awards to receive checks, checks will not be held. Non-4-H Fair Projects: Hay, Field Crops, Truck Crops, Corn and Tobacco Projects will be judged at the Fair. The Tobacco Show will be Monday starting at 9:00AM. All others will be judged at 4:00 PM in the Activity Building. Please note time change! FFA Judging: FFA projects will be judged with the 4-H projects. All FFA projects should be brought to the fairground on July 19th. Judging times have been included on the enclosed master schedule. Activity Building Drawings– all 4-H exhibitors who exhibit projects in the Activity Building will have their names entered in the daily drawing for gift cards. Winners will be posted daily in the Activity Building. Failure to check in projects will forfeit all awards and premiums. Horse Exhibitors Forms- Please be sure your horse I.D. forms have been turned into the Extension office. These forms were due June 1st! Also be aware that when you register for the fair you fill out a Horse Class form AND the Fair Registration form (two separate forms). Your class form will go to the horse committee so they can create the show bill; the Fair Registration form goes to the fair board to ensure stall space is made available. If you are missing either of these you may not be able to show or you may have to pay late fees!!! These forms are due July 5th! The show- the horse show will be a two day show held on both Monday and Tuesday of the fair. You will receive more information directly from your horse advisors and a show packet which will have more details about the classes offered each day. Fun Shows - There will be fun activities throughout the week in the horse ring including a fun show, costume contest, skill-a-thon and barnyard games. Times are listed in middle schedule of the fair book.

Sale Information—Exhibitors may sell one animal per species, up to two animal’s total. For exhibitors with more than one market animal per species they will need to fill out a drop slip indicating which animal they would like dropped from the sale. For example, if you have two market hogs only one can be sold, the other will need to be marked as a drop. All dropped animals will receive the contracted market price from the fair packer or you may choose to send your drop to a fair approved butcher for family consumption or it may be taken home – this must be indicated on the drop slip. If a drop slip is not turned in by the deadline, the fair board will automatically drop the lowest placing animal and it will go to the fair packer. All non-placing Market Goats will be considered dropped animals.

Theme Booths– Booths will be judged Monday of fair, July 31st. Clubs need to turn in a booth form by July 5th so we can plan accordingly. This includes Health, Conservation, and 4-H, and Cloverbud booths. This year’s 4-H Theme is: “I Do 4-H!! DO YOU?” Cloverbud booth area will be decorated as “Under the Sea”! Fair Vet: Animals must not leave the fair during the week of fair, unless discharged by fair vet or barn chairs. Please note: All medical treatment provided by the fair vet to animals at the fair, will be at the expense of the owner.

Show Boxes: Please bring your show boxes to the barns on Saturday, July 29th. This will help relieve loading and unloading congestion on Sunday. Show boxes must fit in your allowed stall space. They may be stored on top of pins but not in alleyways, doorways or public walking areas!

Ohio State Fair Information Ohio State Fair Livestock Entry Forms (including rabbit and poultry) are due June 20th Online or postmarked on the 20th. Dog entries are due July 1st. Horse Entry Forms are due July 10th entries must be entered Online by noon on the 11th. Livestock Skill-a-thon—Entry forms can be found at www.gallia.osu.edu or picked up at the Extension Office. The Skill-a-thon will be held on Monday, July 31st at 6:00 PM at the Bill Gray Pavilion. All participants must be 4-H or FFA members. There will be two age categories: Junior ages 8-13 and Senior ages 14-18 as of Jan. 1 of current year. Individuals will be judged in areas of beef, sheep, goat, and swine, points will be awarded with one winner per category. You do not have to show livestock to enter.

County Fair Demonstration Contest moves to before fair! Demonstration will take place on Monday, July 17th beginning at 9:00 AM at the C.H. McKenzie Ag. Center (Extension office) Participants must be current 4-H members. Demonstrations must be related to this year’s project. Demonstration should not exceed 15 minutes, this includes set up time. Divisions: Junior (ages 8-11), Intermediate 12-13, and Senior (ages 14-18). Please call 740-446-7007 to sign up for a demonstration time. Demonstrations will conclude by 11:30 AM. (No live animals will be allowed.) County Winners will be able to attend the State Fair Demonstration days August 3rd!

Master Exhibitor– This contest will be held on Thursday, August 3rd at 7:00 PM. This contest is open to 4-H and FFA exhibitors. Participants are awarded points for their participation and achievement in market and breeding projects, showmanship, skill-a-thon, and completion of project books. Individuals who exhibit more than one species may register in up to four categories. Cash prizes are awarded to the top beef, sheep, goat, and swine exhibitor based on total points. The top two in each category will be selected to compete on Thursday at 7:00 PM for Master Exhibitor. The Master Exhibitor will receive $250 from The Ohio Valley Bank. Registration forms can be found at www.gallia.osu.edu or picked up at the Extension office. You may also register on check in Sunday.
