Recently we realised that a number of our customers were purchasing our three phase systems and adapting them to workas Ground Power Units, which would have only been a simplemodification on their part and would be cost effective for themwhich is what made us develop and fully test a dedicated systemas a GPU, offering IP65 rating and a 28V DC interlock.

After the design of this system Magnus Power in 2014 put their new GPU’s through rigorous testing certified by TUV a recognised test house giving them the full credentials equal toany other manufacturer on the market. Again the GPU offers simplicity in use and competitive pricing. New installations of thefloor standing GPU product will take place in January of 2015 with the release of a trolley based version in the middle of 2015.Both floor standing and trolley GPU configurations will be available at 45, 60, 90 and 120kW output ratings.

Magnus Power started business in 1985 offering power solutions and working with vibrator and shaker tables; even at that time the shaker technology was becoming old and outdated, with spare parts and components becoming scarce Magnus at the request of their customers at the time started to design and offer replacement and new amplifier systems to support the industry.

After a time the technology that was being used came to theattention of one of the big players in the oil industry for use inoffshore facilities, this became the main source of work for thecompany. Our main customer was Ferranti Subsea SystemsLtd, a UK Electrical company who started to use Magnus products on a regular basis and in the early 90’s they decidedto buy Magnus Power and to use as one of their main suppliersfor Subsea systems. Ferranti later went on to be bought out byKvaerner then to become as it is now Aker Solutions.

Whilst spending most of the time designing and developing systems for the oil industry requests from other sectors startedto come in asking for bespoke power solutions for military andcivil systems this seemed quite a simple transition for Magnusas most of the oil industry work is based around 400Hz systems. Once the requests become more and more frequentMagnus Power decided to design a range of products aimed at the aviation sector which could be supplied as an “off theshelf” range.

The product range was designed to support business from testlabs to hanger installations with the idea that simplicity would be key with a range that would support most needs from lowpower simple fixed voltage and frequency systems to variablevoltage, frequency systems.

The Magnus Power range starts with the LF1-400 single phasestatic frequency converter, it uses a transformer which ensuresfull isolation between the output voltage and the incoming, theunit is fully protected against overcurrent and over temperatureconditions, as are all our units. Sized in a 19” rack mount ordesktop configuration case standing at only 2U high and hasproved to be very popular across a variety of applications in theaviation industry. Once this was brought to the market MagnusPower received many requests for a higher power version ofthis unit which led Magnus to produce a big brother to the 1kVAunit in the LF1-400-3kVA single phase which offers a low pricefixed voltage fixed frequency solution.

In conjunction with the single phase units we received quotationrequests from customers for a three phase low power unit, so wedesigned and brought to market the LF3-400 SFC, which is a simple to operate, single phase input with three phase output at8.7A per phase which has proved to be the most popular lowpowered machine we have produced to date.

After extensive research with our client base it became apparentthe there was a gap in the market for a low cost variable voltagevariable frequency SFC. There were units on the market, but againthe key value that was missing from these units was simplicity, wewent on to produce The LP1 1kVA Single phase unit, and the LP33kVA three phase units, output frequency can be set to any valuebetween 45Hz and 1kHz, output voltage is variable from zero to amaximum in two ranges; defaults are 0-135V and 0-270V.

Output current is doubled on the lower range, and the values chosen by the operator are stored by a microprocessor when the converter is switched off and are available for immediate useon future occasion, values can be adjusted at any time whilst live online or offline, output of the LP range is a pure sine wave. The LP range of converters can also be supplied with an optionalRS232 remote connector which can be connected to any PCoperating on a windows platform allowing control of the unitremotely.

Magnus Power also offer high power solutions, the ME range ofSFC’s are available in a single phase configuration from 3.2kW to 32kW or three phase output from 10kW to 500kW, thesemachines are used in a wide range of sectors, Labs, Marine andaviation and can have the frequency set to whatever specificationthe customer requires. Also the three phase machines can besynced together to offer higher output or used in a hot standbyset up.

Tecnam announced today that Bartolini Air,Poland’s leading Flight Training Organisationhas become the first FTO to successfullyemploy the Tecnam P2010 into its commercialaircraft training syllabus.

The EASA certified Tecnam P2010 was recentlyaccepted by Bartlomiej Walas, ManagingDirector of Bartolini Air, who flew the aircraft

directly from Tecnam’s Capua production facilityto Lodz Airport in Poland via a fuel stop in BadVoslau, Austria.

The total flight lasted 8.05 hrs, partly VFR at FL090 partly IFR at FL100 (LIDF - LOAV) and FL110 (LOAV - EPLL). Mr Walas stated: “This is avery proud day for me and the Bartolini Air teamas we are the first Flight Training Organisation to introduce the Tecnam P2010 into service. The introduction of the P2010 is a significantaddition to our all Tecnam training fleet thatalready includes five P2002JF’s and two P2006TTwins”

Bournemouth airport based Airways Aviationhas launched a new facility where trainee commercial helicopter and fixed wing (aeroplane) pilots can be tutored on the groundschool subjects required to gain their Air Transport Pilots licences.

Ian Brookes, from Bournemouth who gained his fixed wing and helicopter commercial pilotslicences in 2012 has been appointed to headthe ground training in the new facilities whichinclude a lecture room and study areas.

The first students to use the building are futurecadets and are undertaking an introductorycourse in Bournemouth. Students may alsostart their flight training for commercial or privatepilots licences during this time and take a

While Santa Claus and his reindeer are still at theNorth Pole, 200 pilots are delivering Christmaspresents to children in Michigan's foster caresystem. This year, all 5,248 Michigan children inthe Child and Family Services of Michigan, Inc.network receive a minimum of three wrappedpresents delivered by general aviation pilots inthe organization's Operation Good Cheer.

Grosse Pointe Farms pilot Robert Eger has beena volunteer since 2010, but was grounded due to his Cessna 182's mechanical problems.

He would have received an assignment Dec. 6and flown out of Oakland County InternationalAirport to land at one of 24 small Michigan airports. Eger's plane holds up to 500 pounds ofcargo, however, the gifts don't weigh that much,but it is stuffed, he said.

The range of aircraftat the AERO stretches from sailplanes, ultralights,single- and multi-engine piston-driven aircraft, helicopters, gyrocopters and turboprops all the way up to multi-engine jets. New motors, the latest avionics, UAS, services and aviation accessorieswill be additional focal points at the AERO 2015. Four successful special areas will return to theupcoming AERO. The first special show is AvionicsAvenue, where the focus is on all types of on-boardequipment for aircraft and helicopters pertaining tocontrol, navigation, collision avoidance and flightplanning. In the next three years, the end of thetransition period to transfer to 8.33 kHz channelspacing in airplanes and helicopters approved forVFR operations will also generate strong demand for producers.

The new rules for the airspace structure associated with the introduction of StandardizedEuropean Rules of the Air at in early December2014 will also create additional momentum for manufacturers of GPS systems. Visitors will not onlybe able to get information about many of these newsystems, but will have the chance to try them out inthe Headset Test Area.

Also returning for the fourth time will be the EngineArea, where the latest, most modern motors fromvarious manufacturers will be on display, includingelectric, internal combustion and hybrid engines.Due to the constantly rising cost of aviation fuel andthe development of new efficient diesel motors forpropeller-driven aircraft, new innovations are alsoexpected in this field. In light of the uncertain futureof the aviation fuel avgas, innovative engines for propeller aircraft that can also be operated withlead-free aviation fuel will also be on show at the AERO 2015.

The e-flight-expo, featuring alternative drive concepts, will also take place as a permanent element of the AERO for the seventh time. Underthe motto "Electrical, Ecological, Evolutionary“, it will present the current state of electric-based sustainable and future-oriented technologies. The RPAS Expo will illustrate how far the development of civilian drones has come. Unmanned aircraft from several different manufacturers, equipped with the most modernsensor and measurement technology, will be ondisplay. For the second time, there will also be anIndoor UAS Flying Display, for the first time, an outdoor flying display at the Trade Fair Lake nearthe West Entrance.

Another new feature for 2015 will be the Aviationand Pilots Competence Center (APCC). It will serveas a resource centre for pilots and anyone interested in training to become one. There will beinformation and offers from flight schools, publicauthorities and interest groups, such as theLuftfahrt Bundesamt, Germany’s Federal AviationOffice; EASA; AOPA; the German NationalMeteorological Service Deutscher Wetterdienst; and Deutsche Flugsicherung, Germany’s air traffic control organization. At the same time, the “be apilot” campaign will take place. In this campaign,flight schools will present useful information aboutall of the various types of amateur and professional pilot’s licenses.

More than 100 presentations, conferences andworkshops on current aviation topics will be takeplace at the AERO Conferences. Experts frompilots’ associations, regulatory authorities and themanufacturers’ associations GAMA and LAMA aswell as many general aviation groups will discussand provide information about legal and politicalframeworks, the current state of aviation, andopportunities for improvement.

For those visitors wishing to fly to the AERO 2015 intheir own aircraft, slot assignment will be conductedusing an online procedure. Slots can be bookedstarting on March 28, 2015. The glider airfield atMarkdorf will again be available for ultralights andpowered gliders, with a shuttle service available totake visitors to the AERO.

One more unique feature from the last few yearshas also proven to be very popular among AEROvisitors and will be returning for the fourth time in2015: The Tent City. Visitors will be able to affordably spend the night in an exhibition hallusing tents provided by the organizers.

Teams from the manufacturer of DAHER-SOCATA’sTBM business aircraft will participate in design andcertification of this pioneering two-seat trainer.

On December 11, DAHER-SOCATAannounced the signature with Airbus Group’sVoltAir subsidiary for design, developmentand certification of E-Fan 2.0 – the world’sfirst all-electric series production aircraft.

E-Fan 2.0 is part of the electric aircraft programme launched by Airbus Group. This is a first true application of the program,since E-Fan 2.0 is intended to be built in seriesproduction and marketed as a two-seat generalaviation trainer.

E-Fan 2.0 aims to be the first electric aircraft certified by the European Aviation Safety Agency(EASA) and the first all-electric aircraft designedspecifically for pilot training – defining an international aviation standard. One goal of the programme also is to open the way for electrical applications on aircraft of larger size.

Under the project management of VoltAir,DAHER-SOCATA – with its manufacturing experience that includes several thousand aircraft in service worldwide – is responsible forthe E-Fan 2.0 aircraft’s entire development,including its electric engine and batteries, aswell as flight test and certification by EASA asEurope’s airworthiness authority.

DAHER-SOCATA also will be responsible fordefining operational rules for ab-initio trainingwith the French DGAC civil aviation airworthinessauthority. "This selection by Airbus Group demonstrates our innovation capabilities andknow-how," said Stéphane Mayer, President &CEO of the aerospace and defense activities atDAHER. “This is a promising programme, notonly for the aviation sector but for all the high-tech industries that will increasingly call for electric energy management.”

The contract is the result of an initial 18-monthphase of work studies conducted with AirbusGroup, which allowed the project structure. “It is aligned with the development of the engineering services business we launched in2013, offering our skills and expertise of anaerostructure manufacturer and designer in thefield of product engineering to the aviation industry,” explained Jacques Lordon, VicePresident Engineering Development at DAHER-SOCATA.

GAMA congratulatesBob Hoover on receiving Wright Brothers Memorial Trophy

The General Aviation Manufacturers Association(GAMA) today congratulated Robert A. “Bob” Hooveron being awarded the 2014 Wright Brothers MemorialTrophy. Hoover was given the trophy - awarded annually to a living American for “significant publicservice of enduring value to aviation in the UnitedStates”—by the National Aeronautic Association at adinner sponsored by the Aero Club of Washington.

Called the “greatest stick-and-rudder man who everlived” by Jimmy Doolittle, Hoover’s remarkable careerspanned more than 50 years. At the start of World War II,Hoover enlisted with the Tennessee National Guard withthe intention of becoming a fighter pilot. As an Army AirCorps pilot, he flew 58 successful combat missions during the war before being shot down overGermany, where he was taken prisoner. Following 16 months in a prisoner-of war-camp, he escaped, stolea German Focke-Wulf 190, and flew to freedom in theNetherlands. Afterwards, Hoover was assigned to testflight duty for the newly established U.S. Air Force andlater became a corporate test pilot for North American flying the newest generation of jet fighters. But he is bestknown for the delight he brought to millions of fans in the nearly four decades he performed remarkably difficultmaneuvers as an air show pilot. Hoover has flown inmore air shows than any other pilot in history, and wasnamed the third greatest aviator of all time by Air & Space magazine.

Spifire Progresses

At Gatineau, Ontario, Vintage Wings of Canada is making good progress with the restoration oftheir Spitfire MkIX. The starboard wing was attached to the fuselage on11 November at subsidiary company, Vintech AeroStructures at Cosmos, British Columbia.

The aircraft will be re-painted in the colours of an RCAFNo:442 Squadron machine, as flown by Canadian Flt LtArnold “Rosie” Roseland. Although the aircraft hasbeen awaiting refurbish since the 1990’s, it was onlywith the involvement of Vintage Wings in 2009 that workstarted. It is expected to fly again in 2016. NEW ERA LOOMSTEXTRON’s CautiousOptimism in Wichita

The coming of 2015 marks the beginning of a new era in Wichita, notes Dave Franson. It actually began to take shape in 2014 as somepredicted events played out and others, not asanticipated, came to pass.

This new period definitely ranks up there with thebeginning of other new eras – like the memorable one that began in 1986,when singleengine piston aircraft production virtually ceaseddue to the overwhelming threat of product liability litigation. Or the new era that dawned withthe passage of the General Aviation RevitalizationAct and the return to small piston aircraft produc-tion in 1996.

Learjet

It’s not far behind important milestones like 1962,when Learjet joined the Wichita aircraft manufactur-ing ranks and introduced business jets into thelocal product mix; or 1934, when Cessna revived its post-Stock Market crash production with theAirmaster. Beech Aircraft, which had actually rentedfactory space from its rival while keeping its doorsopen during the Depression, continued with limitedaircraft production. Of course, there was thewartime military build-up of the 1940s and the post-war transition back to civilian products in the1950s, too.

New BeginningThis latest chapter in Wichita’s aviation historydebuted with a bit less fanfare than the launch of Learjet or even the 1972 premier of the Citationline, but it’s certainly not “business as usual,” either.In the intervening decades since then, while the citywas producing more airplanes than anywhere elseon earth, things settled into a familiar, if not alwayscomfortable cycle. But that situation has definitelychanged.

For starters, the two most familiar names in thenews are not generating headlines or jobs in thisnew era. Beechcraft and Cessna are subordinateentities on the lighted signs that now identify thefacilities of Textron Aviation on Wichita’s east andwest sides. And, the numbers of people employedin their respective plants and in the aviation industryin Wichita as a whole are not expected to grow significantly in the coming year, probably no morethan 1.4% according to Wichita State University’sCenter for Economic Development and BusinessResearch. The “Big Three” in Wichita has becomethe “Right-sized Two”, and they’re learning to domore with less when it comes to employment.

At the same time, Boeing – formerly the 800 poundgorilla in Wichita’s aerospace economy andemployment arena – is gone completely, leaving

behind nearly 2 million square feet of manufactur-ing space. The company completed its departurefrom the site it had occupied for 83 years in 2014.Spirit AeroSystems, which acquired Boeing’sCommercial Division in 2004 remains, but thousands of jobs were lost and acres of empty manufacturing space remain,as yet, unclaimed.What becomes of it will certainly impact the futureof the local aviation community. Spirit is trying todecide what to do with the Gulfstream wing fabrication business it currently has. The learningcurve on this segment has proven to be steep –and costly – and it’s a candidate for divestiture.

Meanwhile, the market for the products producedby Textron Aviation and Bombardier AerospaceLearjet will have a great deal to do with how thenext era of Wichita’s aviation story unfolds.Bombardier Learjet is proceeding with develop-ment of its Learjet 85, but the pace of the programis being influenced by the company’s focus on its C-Series airliner which is, in the words ofBombardier CEO Pierre Beaudoin, a “greater priority, given market demand and where we are inthe program.” The Wichita-based Learjet pro-grams anticipate a decline in total deliveries for the calendar year assuming a mid-year introduction into service for the Learjet 85 in 2015.

Textron took an aggressive approach to updatingand developing new models of its Citation jet lineduring the downturn and will have four recently certified and one soon-to-be approved model available as the New Year dawns. The Citation Sovereign+, the Citation X+, certifiedin June of 2014, the CJ3+, which earned its FAAticket in Septemberand the M2 will bejoined by the Latitudeduring the secondquarter of 2015. While bothcompanies haveseen their backlogsgrow during the pastyear, the year aheadwon’t be consideredthe launch of a bonafide recovery untildelivery numbersincrease and keepgoing up annually for several years in a row.

At the other end of the spectrum, the single enginepiston airplanes and turboprops face an uncertainfuture. The piston engine airplanes must deal witha transition away from 100LL fuel and purchaseprices that make them extremely difficult to justifyfor flight training or recreational use. The turbopropworkhorses, the Caravans and King Airs, still havegreat potential for special mission applications andremain attractive possibilities in developing markets. Their proven versatility and ruggednesstranscend a lot of the obstacles faced by cus-tomers who operate where infrastructure hasn’tcaught up with technology. Those aircraft can fill avariety of roles, and the combined Beechcraft andCessna service network is global and extensive.Still, after a half dozen years of weathering a persistent storm in a town that is certainly familiarwith severe weather, it’s not hard to understandwhy there’s a hint of caution in the wind as thenext chapter of Wichita’s aviation story unfolds.

The terminalwill give the airport a newdimension.With a totalcapacity of 10 million passengers, the building, in compliance with HQE®standards, will welcome the growing low cost traffic atthe airport, in addition to traffic from traditional airlines.Using innovative equipment, the terminal will meet passengers’ expectations, while responding to new passenger consumption patterns. An extension to theexisting Terminal 1, it will eventually be connected, viaan underground gallery, to the current Terminal 3 boarding satellite (operational since November 2011).

The existing metal-fabric section of Terminal 3 will bedemolished in the summer of 2016. The outside areason the "city side" will incorporate a pedestrianesplanadeand infrastructures required for all ground access points.

The project, including the terminal building, the exterior, aircraft parking and facilities, represents a totalinvestment of €180 million, €140 million of which is to bespent on building work. The European Investment Bankis providing 5-years’ worth of funding for the programmewith a total loan of €140 million. The building work will besplit into two phases: the first phase will consist of build-ing the new terminal, the second will involve connectingit to the existing Terminal 1.

AgustaWestland has announced that it hassigned a Memoranda of Understanding (MoU), on offset contracts worth nearly €800 million withfour key Polish industrial sector companiesgrouped in the Polish Armaments Group: FabrykaBroni Radom (Radom Arms Factory), MilitaryAviation Works no. 1 in Łód , Military AviationWorks no. 2 in Bydgoszcz and ZM Tarnów.

The MoUs are an integral part ofAgustaWestland’s offset proposal for the Polishindustry and are a part and parcel of PZL Świdnik’s (its subsidiary) offer within the tender for the supply of 70 multirole helicopters for thePolish Armed Forces, for which the companyoffers the AW149 helicopter – the most modernand technologically advanced aircraft among the machines proposed to the Polish MoD.

SAR FLEET FINANCINGMILESTONE finances 11 S92s and an AW189 forBristow UK SAR fleet

Milestone Aviation Group, one of the globalleaders in helicopter leasing, has recentlyconfirmed that it has closed seven of 12 helicopter leases to Bristow HelicoptersLimited, an affiliate of the Bristow Group.

The helicopters will be used for civilian searchand rescue (SAR) services when BristowHelicopters takes over delivery of UK SAR services on behalf of the Maritime andCoastguard Agency (MCA) in 2015. Milestonewill provide Bristow 11 Sikorsky S-92 helicoptersand one AgustaWestland AW189, which have acombined value of more than US$420 million.

Four of the S-92s are operating currently fromthe Stornoway and Sumburgh bases in NorthernScotland. Three S-92 aircraft are in other UKlocations for training purposes. Four additionalS-92 aircraft are in production. The AW189 helicopter that Milestone will provide is one of 11 AW189s that Bristow will operate under theUK SAR contract.

DELIVERIESBOND Air Services takesdelivery of first EC145T2 in UK

In mid-November, Bond Air Services took delivery of the first EC145T2 in the UK – serial 20012 – arriving by air on a German test registration D-HADM. This helicopter hassince been registered with the UK CAA as G-HEMC and would be ordinarily expected to go through various certification and paperwork exercises before commencingcommercial operation – particularly as thefirst of type in the UK.

There are three known EC145T2s due in the UK,one for East Anglian Air Ambulance, which theyannounced in November 2011 with the expecta-tion of the aircraft being in service for December2013. The other two expected EC145T2s in theUK are for the Scottish Air Ambulance,announced June 2012 as due in 2014. It thusseems logical to assume the first delivery is forEast Anglian Air Ambulance.

Switzerland’s REGA completesfleet upgrade to all - IFR

Rega has successfully completed the upgradingand certification of theirmountain helicopter withthe AgustaWestland DaVinci “HB-ZRS” which isthe most recent machine in its mountain helicopterfleet.

The air ambulance will have the capacity to deliver fresh blood supplies to the scene of life-threatening accidents. This will be the first time in the North of England that blood transfusions will be available outside of a hospital.

The demonstration effort is part of the AdvancedTechnology Tiltrotor (ATTR) program. Through acooperative agreement between Bell Helicopterand L-3 WESCAM, the first time designating trialswere recently conducted over a 14-day period inNovember at the U.S. Army’s Yuma ProvingGround in Arizona.

LASER SENSORSYSTEMAIRBUS Completes SuccessfulFlight Tests of Laser-BasedAirspeed Sensor System

The laser sensor system was installed on board an Airbus Dauphin 6542 helicopter for a series offlight tests conducted in Marignane, France by the company.

Airbus Group has completed successful flighttests on a fiber-optic, eye-safe, laser-based sensor system that delivers accurate airspeedinformation in the three axis at low and evennegative airspeed. This range of capability is not possible with pitot tubes, the longstandingindustry standard for airspeed sensors.

The sensor system, developed by Manassas,Virginia, USA-based Optical Air Data Systems(OADS) was installed aboard an Airbus Dauphin6542 helicopter for the battery of flight tests thatwere conducted in Marignane, France by AirbusGroup’s Airbus Helicopters division. With the suc-cessful completion of these tests, the stage is nowset for Airbus Group to work with OADS for certifi-cation, with the ultimate goal being commercial-ization aboard rotary wing aircraft. “We are veryimpressed by the system’s performance duringflight tests and believe this technology can offersignificant performance improvements in chang-ing the way we design and operate aircraft in thefuture due to the accuracy and timeliness of theinformation,” said Allan McArtor, chairman andCEO of Airbus Group, Inc.

“It’s an extraordinary achievement for the globalteam,” said VP and Chief Safety Officer StevePredmore in a video message with President and CEO Jonathan Baliff highlighting the milestone. “We always knew that Target Zero was a reachable goal. We got there with the daily commitment and dedication it takes to be an industry leader in safety.”

For us, reaching 1,000 days was a starting point,”said Safety Coordinator Adegboyega Oyinboade.“Zero accidents: none today, tomorrow or ever after remains our ultimate goal.”

AW189 delays meanBristow will fly AW139on UK Coastguard contract

The development ofthe AgustaWestlandAW189 has beensomewhat slower thanexpected, whichmeans that operatorswill not receive their air-craft on the expected timescale. In some cases theaircraft will be at least a year behind schedule, andwhen a fleet of AW189s are involved, alternativesneed to be sought. And so it is with BristowHelicopters and the UK Coastguard contract. TheUK is moving from a situation with a minority of itsSAR provision outsourced to the new model with allSAR helicopters being flown by a commercial oper-ator. Bristow won the contract with a bid involving10 Sikorsky S92s and 10 AgustaWestland AW189s,although to allow for maintenance cover, they willhave a fleet of 11 of each aircraft type. Four S92shave been on contract at Sumburgh and Stornowayfrom spring 2013, and a further three have arrived inrecent weeks with four more due. Hot air balloons drifting inmulticolored splashesagainst a blue heaven are acommon sight in the NapaValley, California in theUSA.But lately, more than balloons have been taking to the wine country skies. A few pioneers are experi-menting with unmanned aerial vehicles, better knownas drones, exploring theirpotential for such agriculturalchores as monitoring, irrigation and crop spraying.Drones make sense forwine country, especially on the steep slopes associatedwith high-end wines, says Steve Markofski, spokesmanfor Yamaha Motor Corp.
