Piper Aircraft's top-of-the-line piston-poweredM-Class Mirage was named "Best of the BestPersonal Aircraft for 2014" by the influentialRobb Report publication in the USA.

"A pressurized cabin, six seats, and a full-sizeair-stair door are unusual features for a piston-powered single-engine aircraft, but they are partof the package with the Piper Mirage," wrote theluxury lifestyle magazine.

"While the plane is designed primarily for utility and efficiency, Piper did not overlookcomfort. The cabin features roomy leather-upholstered fold-down club seats, electricoutlets for personal devices, reading lights,and an easily accessible interior baggagecompartment," according to the publication,dated June 1, 2014.

REGULATIONSEASA’s new proposals forflight recorders and locating devices

The EuropeanAviation SafetyAgency (EASA)today announcednew proposals forflight recorders andunderwater locatingdevices which aimat facilitating the recovery of an aircraft and of its flight recorders in the unfortunate eventuality of an accident.

The new EASA requirements include the extension of the transmission time of underwater locating devices (ULD) fitted onflight recorders from 30 days to 90 days. SUMMIT OVERFLIGHTTECNAM conquersAconcagua

Tecnam P92 Tail Dragger achieves Aconcaguasummit overflight on 24 May 2014. At nearly23,000 ft, Aconcagua is the highest mountain inboth the Southern and Western hemispheres.

It has been a long held ambition of MarioCardama, Tecnam’s Argentina based dealer tofly over Mount Aconcagua. On the 24th of May,Mario achieved his lifelong ambition as he powered his Tecnam P92 Tail Dragger up to22,840 ft and over the summit.

Here’s an extract from Mario’s flight commentaryAfter several months of planning, on the 24th ofMay conditions were such to make an attempt tofly over the summit of Aconagua possible.

So around noon I took off from RAE- RivadaviaAerotec- Mendoza airport, Argentina, to headingfor San Martin Airport (2100 ft.) to coordinatewith friends (Alejo and Cayetano ) who would fly with me towards the Andes mountains to support my radio activity and watch for any developments!

At 13:05 we took off westbound climbing toreach the Potrerillos Dam in the Pre-Andesmountain range. We crossed at approx. 8,000feet and continued to Cordón del Plata, exceeding 10,000 ft here. I then separated fromthe support aircraft that was accompanying me.Approaching the Uspallata Valley and across12000 ft I begin to see the imposing Aconcaguain the distance and very high indeed. The Tecnam P92 Tail Dragger was performing perfectly.

At these altitudes it’s necessary to use oxygen, soI connected my supply and I then began to monitor mybody signs very carefully. I decided to cross the valleyto the north and head in amore direct path to theAconcagua and the TecnamP92 continued to behave perfectly. It continue climbing smoothly as I got close to the mountains base at 18,000 ft. An altitude of18,000 ft however was not enough, I had to proceed to the hardest part... to reach 22840 ft.and the summit.

By now I was very cold and 2 of the 3 camerasmounted outside stopped recording. The aircraftcabin was comfortable and there was the satisfaction that I didn’t feel so cold even thoughafter passing the 20,000 the cold had alreadystarted to penetrate into my feet but I did notgive it much thought.

After avoiding some turbulence and makingsome turns in the area I managed to reach thesummit , and the excitement and the desire to

I communicated to friends who were down at amuch lower altitude, with what to them seemed

a strained voicethat my missionwas accomplished.I was descendingthrough 24,000 ft. /7340 mts. I 'm controlling allparameters of theTecnam P92’sRotax 914 engine. I increased the

RPM’s but did not exceed ‘max’. All aspect ofP92’s descent were very smooth.

As I descended, I remembered all the peoplewho helped get me here; my family for the support that I always had, my father for infectingmy passion for flying and of all Tecnam teamback in Capua, Italy. A special mention must bemade of Professor Luigi Pascale, who at 91 isstill the inspiration for all the great designs atTecnam and without who my personal missionwould not have been possible.

Guilie was crowned the winner in the Gold Class Final.

11 internationally renowned pilots battled it outlast weekend at the first international FormulaOne class air racing series – Air Race F1 – inLleida, near Barcelona, Spain. Pilots from theUSA, UK, France and Sweden were revved up toshowcase some of the world’s best air racing inwhich French pilot Christian Guilie won the overall title on Sunday 1 June.

Guilie was crowned the winner in the Gold ClassFinal when he crossed the line with an averagespeed of 383kph (238mph). It was a truly globalpodium with three different nationalities compris-ing first, second and third spots. Guilie was seenas the dark horse from day one of race weekwhen the sleek plane that he designed and builthimself was unveiled at the Lleida-AlguaireAirport; the expectation that the European planesmay be slower than their trans-Atlantic cousins’was quickly dismissed. The race itself was closewith Guilie taking the win ahead of USA’s veteran race pilot Jay Jones and Sweden’sThom Richard. While his rivals’ experience and maneuverability was arguably stronger it was theFrenchman’s use of energy and speed that wasthe deciding factor.

Pipistrel reports it has successfully completed the FAA Light-Sport Aircraft operations audit. In February, the FAA auditdelegation visited and verified compliance to FAA regulation and ASTM LSA standardsat Pipistrel’s factories in Italy and Slovenia.

The audit consisted of compliance verification of Pipistrel’s products, production organization,continued airworthiness procedures, maintenance aspects, and documentation forLSA aircraft sold in the USA market.

FINANCIAL NEWSe-Go aeroplanes raises£950,000 second round of finance

e-Go aeroplanesLimited, the UK’s firstever manufacturer oflightweight carbonfibre aeroplanes, hasraised a second roundof finance. Having seta target of between£650k to £800k, theCompany has sur-passed this andraised in excess of£950k. This latestfunding round followsthe e-Go prototype’sfirst successful flighton 17th October 2013.

In recognition of their confidence in the Cambridge-based com-pany, all existing investors are contributing again– all keen to continue supporting the company’s development and expansion. In addition, a number of new supporters have invested, bothdirectly and through the crowdfunding platformSyndicateRoom. The high-profile Government-backed Angel Co-Fund is also making a significant investment.

Twenty investors backed e-Go aeroplane’slaunch in 2011, among them UK aerospaceleader Marshall of Cambridge. Now a furthersixty investors have joined the group, includinga number of business angels, the Company’schief test pilot and first British born astronaut,Michael Foale.

Flight trials and ground testing of the e-Go prototype continues and first customer deliveries are planned for quarter one 2015 - at a sales cost of around £50,000 + VAT.

The basis of the e-Go design philosophy is the packaging of leading-edge aeronauticalengineering with proven technology, taking

successful elements from non-aviation indus-tries. For example, the design’s airframe benefitsfrom techniques used in Formula One race cars,while the avionics, data-logging and enginemanagement are inspired by the technologyused in today’s road cars.

“The e-Go ethos is to do a lot with a little andthat will remain our guiding principle,” saidMalcolm Bird, e-Go’s executive chairman. “The UK is unique in offering such a supportivederegulated environment for aircraft of this type; so new investors can look forward to anexciting time in helping bring to market a design that is innovative, striking in appearance,fun to fly and will cut dramatically the cost ofpersonal flying.”

The Pylon Club -- a flying club based at PatcoField in Norristown, Pa. -- was having anotherof its fly-outs. This one was to a private islandin the Saint Lawrence River, owned by brothers Philip T. and Laurence P. Sharples, industrialists specializing in the manufactureof centrifuges.

For unknown reasons, the Sharples brothers gotlost en route and took awhile to sort things out.By the time they neared the island it was becom-ing dark, so they landed at a friend's airport andspent the night. That friend was Edwin Link, theinventor of the Link trainer. Link's houseguestwas Edward J. Noble, soon to become the chair-man of the Civil Aeronautics Authority (CAA), theforerunner of the Federal Aviation Administration.It was autumn 1937.

The only example of the Blume Bl.502 is nowunder restoration by Gomolzig Flugzeug undMaschinenbau GmbH at Koblenz WinningenAirfield close to the banks of the River Rhine.

The machine is one of only two examples of thefour-seat, all-metal tourer built at the Focke-Wulffactory at Bremen Airport during 1957. The aircraft was designed by the Arado AR234 “Blitz”bomber designer, Dr. Walter Blume as a successorto the pre-war Arado 79 two-seat tourer.

Between the end of Marchand early April, ten dedicated flight hours sawmore than 70 power-off conversions from airplane mode to helicopter mode flown from theArlington (Texas) facility inthe USA. The testswere flown under the auspices of FAA and covered the full wind-milling and autorotationenvelopes, marking another major achievementfor the program development.

The handling qualities of the aircraft were verybenign throughout the testing and theperformance of the aircraft exceeded expectedcharacteristics seen during preparation in theengineering simulator in Arlington.

CITATION XLS+Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC)certification has been awarded for the CitationXLS+, clearing the way for deliveries in Chinalater this year. Certification is another step towardbeginning operations at Cessna - AVIC Aircraft(Zhuhai) Co., Ltd. for final assembly and deliveryof the Citation XLS+ to customers in China.

The Citation XLS+ has the largest cabin in itsclass according to Cessna (nearly 19 feet longwith a dropped aisle for 68 inches of height), withseating for up to 12 passengers. It travels as fastas 441 ktas with a range of more than 1,858 nautical miles.

CITATION XThe new, higher-speed Citation X was expectedto be certified during the second quarter. Theoriginal schedule called for delivery of the firstCitation X late last year, however, tests wereextended for several months and were recentlycompleted. Cessna says the new Citation X willenter service as the fastest business jet on themarket, beating the Mach 0.925 standard set bythe Gulfstream G650. The new Citation X willcarry nine passengers for a 3,240nm mission.It is expected to be the third new derivative ofa Cessna jet delivered since December, alongwith the Citation M2 and the new Sovereign.

The 5,200nm Falcon 5X was unveiled duringthe 2013 NBAA and performed its first virtualflight on the simulator last November. The aircraftis scheduled to complete assembly and beginground tests this summer, and the companysays it will feature the largest cabin cross-sectionand the most advanced flight controls in theindustry. First flight is expected in the first half of2015 and entry into service mid-2017.

DASSAULT FALCON 7XThe Falcon 7X set a new transatlantic speedrecord, flying between Teterboro and LondonCity Airport at an average speed of Mach 0.88.Two pilots and three passengers were on board.The aircraft was fully equipped for normal operation. Five hours and 54 minutes afterdeparting Teterboro, it touched down at LondonCity Airport.

The Falcon 7X also recently marked the milestone of roll-out of the 250th aircraft. It will flyto the Falcon completion center in Little Rock,Arkansas and then be delivered to its customerbefore year’s end. 216 Falcon 7Xs are currentlyin service in 34 countries globally.

PROJECT SHELVEDRussianHelicopters, andAgustaWestlandshelve joint developmentproject

Russian Helicopters and AgustaWestlandhave quietly shelved plans to jointly developa 2.5t rotorcraft, a senior executive from theMoscow-headquartered manufacturer hasrevealed.

Alexander Mikheev, general director ofRussian Helicopters, says the decision wastaken earlier this year not to proceed with theproject – barely six months after the pairsigned a heads of agreement for the programme at the 2013 MAKS air show.

"At the end of March we took a joint decisionon not continuing to develop this project. The competitiveness [in this segment] is quitehigh, and we have decided not to proceed.We will now focus on other classes [of heli-copter] and other projects," says Mikheev,speaking through an interpreter.

Russian Helicopters and AgustaWestland continue tocollaborate through their Moscow Tomilino-basedHeliVert joint venture, producing the AW139intermediate twin heli for the Russian and CIS market.

The companies continue to collaboratethrough their Moscow Tomilino-based HeliVertjoint venture, producing the AW139 intermediate twin (above) for the Russian andCIS market, and discussions are under way to potentially deepen their relationship.

Local media reports have hinted at a potentialdeal between Rostec – Russian Helicopters'parent – and AgustaWestland, which could see the Italian firm offered around a 25% stake in its joint-venture partner.

Bell has announced the progress of itsEuropean demo tour with a Bell 429 aircraftconfigured for Helicopter Emergency MedicalServices (HEMS). The aircraft arrived earlierthis month and has visited many charity andEMS organizations in the United Kingdom.

”The feedback we received on the UK leg of theBell 429 tour was absolutely fantastic. Theorganizations were impressed by the size of thecabin, as well as the quality and flexibility of theinterior,” said Patrick Moulay, Bell Helicopter’smanaging director of Europe.

“The Bell 429 raises the standard in the industryin safety and comfort allowing operators to pro-vide an increased level of care for the patientson board.”

The Bell 429 is set to continue its demo tour in thecoming weeks with stops in Italy, France, Belgiumand Spain as well as other destinations along theway.

Their stock prices, depressed after Big Oil'srecent spending cuts, could also be readying fortake-off. Bristow Group Inc plans to invest $1 billion this year to procure just some of the 300new helicopters that Barclays estimates will beneeded by the oil and gas industry over the nextfive years.

"We will invest more in this one year than in

the last two-and-a-half years combined," saidJonathan Baliff, the chief financial officer ofBristow who will take over as CEO on July 31.

"To invest a third of our market capitalization inone year is one way of saying we are optimisticof the future." With a market value of $2.7 billion, Houston-based Bristow is the largest ofthe niche group of companies that supply helicopters to the oil and gas industry and,increasingly, for search-and-rescue missions. As oil majors such as Exxon Mobil Corp andRoyal Dutch Shell have announced spendingcuts after years of double-digit percentagegrowth, investor appetite for auxiliary serviceshas waned.

Bristow's stock has fallen 6 percent in the last sixmonths. Shares of Era Group Inc, a competitor,have fallen 11 percent, while CHC Group Ltd haslost over a quarter of its value since its shareswere floated in New York in January.

HEMSUK’s Great WesternAir Ambulance to upgrade toEC135 in October

Bond Air Services have confirmed that the contract they have with Great Western AirAmbulance will see an aircraft upgrade in October 2014.

The move is largely prompted by their currentBo105 being incapable of operating from thenewly-opened helipad at Bristol Royal Infirmary,one of two hospitals in the centre of GWAA'soperational area. The charity had previouslytargeted a date in August.

Recent operational tests of the Bristol RoyalInfirmary helipad just prior to its official openingwere flown using GWAA's Bo105, but with theaircraft stripped out of most of its interior toallow it to operate within safety limits. The move to the EC135 by Great Western willleave just one air ambulance Bo105 in the UK,with Scotland's Charity Air Ambulance.

EXPERIMENTALAIRBUS’s innovative manoeuver forSpacePlane drop test

Early during May, an AS350B3e Ecureuil operated byAirbus Helicopters SoutheastAsia (AHSA) played an impor-tant role in a technology demonstration led by Airbus Group’s Defenceand Space division that may one day see tourists traveling to space.

The project, known as theSpacePlane, aims to take passengers on short trips above the atmosphere in a jet designed to takeoff from a standard runway and then rocket to heights of around 100 kilometers thanks to a methane-oxygen engine.

The demonstrator tests, conducted off the coastof Singapore, were carried out to help under-

stand how the aircraft would perform during the end-of-flight phase following a return from space.

To do this, the quarter-scaledemonstrator needed to bedropped from an altitude of10,000 feet (approximately 3,000meters or nearly two miles).Airbus Group decided to performthis feat with a helicopter and thedesign expertise of AHSA.

AHSA’s design office conceived,produced and then tested the platform used to raise theSpacePlane from a barge

The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson officiallyopened the St George’s Healthcare NHS Trusthelipad during May.

Planning for the £5m helipad began in 2010shortly after St George’s Hospital was designated as the major trauma centre for the South West London and Surrey TraumaNetwork

It is the first London helipad south of theThames and will routinely receive patientsfrom the Kent, Surrey and Sussex AirAmbulance as well as the London’s AirAmbulance and possibly further afield ifrequired.

The Helicopter Emergency Landing Pad(HELP) appeal donated £1m to the helipadconstruction, which took 11 months to complete. The pad has been in operationsince early April this year and has so farreceived 30 patients from five ambulance services.
