AUTOZONE DOME AT THE SHARPE PLANETARIUM

Immerse yourself in sight, sound and comfort like never before! The dome is 50’ across, with a top that is 32’ 6” off-of-floor: the screen area is 3,925 sq. ft., making it the largest projection screen in Memphis.

The new Planetarium seats 145 people, with 5 designated wheelchair spaces. The projected image is 2,400 pixels in diameter, placing more than 4.5 million pixels on the dome. The software generates real-time simulations of the cosmos as seen from Earth or anywhere in the known universe. It can simulate space and time travel by showing how the night sky changes over 1 million years in the past and up to 1 million years into the future.

In Remembrance of Eugene CernanJanuary 16, 2017, we lost an iconic hero of the Space Age, Captain Eugene Andrew “Gene” Cernan. It makes us reflect on the great era of space exploration in the 1960s and 70s. That phenomenal time brought forth brave men who put their lives on the line to do things that had never been done before, supported by determined teams of talented men and women, often taking chances with cutting-edge technologies.Captain Cernan was the last man on the moon. As he lifted his foot from the surface, he left behind a footprint that endures still and will remain to greet ones who are sure to follow. You can relive those moments in the AutoZone Dome at the Sharpe Planetarium where you will also hear Cernan’s poignant and hopeful words spoken at the end of the final Apollo mission to the moon. That historic moment, frozen in time, forms the opening scenes of our program: Back to the Moon for Good. When you visit the Pink Palace museum, you can also see a real moon rock on display, brought back aboard Apollo 17 in 1972 by none other than Gene Cernan himself. It’s an experience sure to inspire the next generation of explorers.

MAGEVNEY HOUSE Nestled near downtown Memphis, Magevney House is a typical pre-Civil War, middle-class home, built in the 1830s for the city’s first permanent schoolteacher. The house is furnished as it would have been in the 1850s, featuring many of the Magevney family belongings, including Mr. Magevney’s school desk and Mrs. Magevney’s trunk and secretary. There is a charming herb garden, grape arbor and renovated stable behind the house.

Open the first Saturday of each month from 1pm to 4pm. Admission is free to the public.

    HISTORIC PROPERTIES

MALLORY-NEELY HOUSE The Mallory-Neely House is a three-story Italianate mansion in Victorian Village near downtown Memphis that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The stately 25-room home was built in 1852 and renovated by the James C. Neely family in the 1880s and 1890s. The Mallory-Neely House retains its original Victorian furnishings along with carefully restored stenciled and hand-painted ceilings, parquet flooring, elaborate plaster moulding, and stained-glass windows purchased at the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. In addition, the house is now compliant with the Americans With Disabilities Act and is accessible on the first floor to visitors with wheelchairs.

Open Fridays & Saturdays from 10am to 4pm, with tours on the hour and half hour. The last tour begins at 3pm.

In December 2016, three generations of Annie Cartwright Bess’ family toured the house.

Located on 232 acres in McNairy County in West Tennessee, Coon Creek is an adventure in archeology and nature, producing some 600 species of animal and marine fossils. These fossils are over 70 million years old and include the skeletal remains of a mosasaur, a 25-foot-long swimming reptile found in the creek bed in 1990.

Every year the Pink Palace Family of Museum invites its members to the Coon Creek Members’ Day Fossil dig, from 10am to 4pm. Families enjoy a day of digging in the dirt for 70-million-year old fossils, as well as a scale model of the solar system provided by the Planetarium department and other activities for children provided by the Pink Palace Education department.

  • CONFERENCES, PARTIES & WEDDINGS The Pink Palace and Lichterman Nature Center offer more than exhibits and education. They are great places to hold special events. Many Mid-South brides have the wedding of their dreams at one of our properties. Corporate event planners like the choices of rooms and amenities offered. Both the Pink Palace and Lichterman Nature Center offer free parking and full-time security.

The Pink Palace Museum Store served a diverse group of customers during the year. From school groups with educational needs to Elvis fans who souvenir shopped, the store staff guided our visitors through what we hope was a memorable shopping experience. One of the most requested services during the school year was for help with science projects, especially geology projects involving rocks and minerals. The store regularly carries a wide selection of loose rocks and minerals and kits containing numerous examples of specific specimens. Our more expensive exotic minerals and fossils are always favorites with advanced collectors.
