PRESIDENT’S REPORT
We had a wonderful reunion in Texas. Formal activities began on Monday April 16. First, we returned to
sea on a Riverwalk boat cruise with only minimal seasickness encountered. Photos by Sharon and John Love.
This was followed by a picnic dinner and Elvis show at the Hotel. We had 15 Wounded Warriors, their sponsor,
and 4 family members as our guests. We seated them at our tables and had a great time getting to know each other.
On April 17, we had a bus trip to see the Nimitz National Museum of the Pacific War (see photo on Page 1 by Rhonda
Wheeler), Wild Seed Farm, shops in Fredericksburg, and enjoyed a German Bavarian dinner. On April 18, we had a bus trip to
tour the USS Lexington (CVA-16), the carrier with the longest service in U.S. Navy history. We had lunch in the Wardroom and
had our 5 tour guides as guests who then gave us a wonderful tour of the ship. The below photo shows where the Kamikazi hit.
On April 19, we bused to San Antonio National Cemetery for our “Tolling of the Boats” ceremony. Thanks to
Richard Clubb for driving our Bell from Florida. We also had Ron Godwin, James Halbert, Richard Clubb, Ted Anthony and Joe Murdoch read out the 52 Submarines lost in WW II as well as Thresher and Scorpion, with Jack Merrill ringing the bell. Then
Ivan Joslin read the names of our 19 Shipmates who have entered eternal patrol since our Branson reunion in November 2010.
4
Our second stop was a visit to SAS (San Antonio Shoes). They greeted us on the buses and had drawings for a free pair
of shoes for both the ladies (Sharon Love winner) and the men (Ron Godwin winner). We then checked out their antiques, clas-
sic cars, 5 cent popcorn and 10 cent cokes. We also bought a lot of very nice shoes. Finally, our third stop was the Little Red
Barn Restaurant where the waitresses wear cowboy hats and boots and had a large selection of foods to choose from.
Our Banquet was held later that evening and our three attending submarine skippers (Richard Fox Sea Poacher 63-64;
Gene Dempsey Mackerel; and James Wilson Sea Poacher 64-66) gave interesting talks. Joe Murdoch and Ron Godwin initially
contributed and led us in donating $1,000 for the Wounded Warriors in Fort Sam Houston. Your donation is tax deductible.
Also, Lanny Yeske and Terry Kopansky ran the Silent Auction Raffle and raised $652. Of this, $155 was from sales of
Captain Lawrence Stahl’s mugs and ship’s plaque (graciously donated by his daughter Betsy Wilkinson and wife Mary) which
went to our Humanitarian Fund. Terry Kopansky also coordinated the SAPO games and gave out the three awards. Cal Coch-
rane took first place with an incredible score of 24,000 which included two consecutive shots into the Frog’s Mouth! Cal and his
gang also raised $250 for the Association from the 50-50 Raffle won by Joe Murdoch. He also showed us how to raise a guaran-
teed amount of $380 with the “Heads-tails” coin flip. Then 19 of us gave $20 each and lined up in the heads or tails group. Each
coin flip (by Shirley Dempsey) eliminated half of us. Shortly, Buster McCollum won the WWII painting by Richard DeRossett.
At our business meeting we chose Charleston, SC, for our next National Reunion from April 29 to May 2, 2014. Jon
Nagle is heading a group of shipmates working on the details, so check out our website (www.seapoacher.com) for the latest. It
promises to be another fun filled, interesting and must-attend Reunion. We also voted to send $200 to the USSVI for “Kaps 4
Kids.“ Sharon Love was our official photographer for the entire event and took group photos after the Banquet. See http://
www.photoshow.com/members/wbrinkman for a photo show by clicking on Number 4 and then the icon on the 3rd row left.
Joe Murdoch is hosting a “Mini-Reunion “ in Branson, Missouri from 9-11 November 2012 that is open to all friends,
veterans , etc. This is not an official Sea Poacher Reunion (no business will be conducted), but it’s a great time to be together!
See the website for details. Roy Purtell, Sea Owl Association President, extended an invitation to all Sea Poacher shipmates and
wives, and guests to join them in their next National Reunion early September 2013 in Cleveland, Ohio. Check out their website
at www.ussseaowl.com. The Submarine Cod and the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame are located there.
Regards membership, we currently have 216 Life Members and 34 Regular members. If you’re a Life Mem-
ber or have paid your 2012 dues, thank you. If not, then just a reminder to pay $10 for your 2012 dues or become a
Life Member for $100. Good reasons for becoming a Life Member are (1) You’ll never again get these annoying letters from me or our Treasurer Hubert Jackson, (2) You’ll receive a free patch, and (3) the Association continues
Life Membership status for your widow. Send your check (made out to Sea Poacher Association) to me at 4500 Tif-
fany Nicole Street, Round Rock, TX 78665-9466 or email me at [email protected] if questions.
5
As to address and email changes, be sure to send us your latest mailing and e-mail addresses. Remember, it is our Association policy to not show your mailing address and telephone number on our newsletters or on our web-
site. When shipmates request them, we do put them in touch with you.
Please let me know at [email protected] that you want to get your newsletter off the computer and
to be taken off the mailing list to save the Association over $10 a year. We’ll use the savings for other activities in-
stead! Then four times a year, I’ll e-mail you that the latest newsletter is on the website for you to view and/or print.
When a shipmate passes on, we present to the next of kin a Memorial Plaque. The framed and matted picture
of Sea Poacher underway at sunset includes a Final Prayer and indicates the service years. We decided that funding
for this stands alone, so we accept contributions made out to Sea Poacher Association and mailed to me. Please indi-
cate “Memorial Fund” on your check.
Newsletter Editor Lanny Yeske welcomes new write-ups or photos. Send to 1063 MacArthur Place, Forest,
VA 24551-1931 or email [email protected]. Lanny saves most everything, and it eventually will get printed
when space is available.
Editor’s Note: Lastly, Sharon Love captured a final reunion photo of Skippers Jim Wilson and Dick Fox that
says a lot about the great time we had in San Antonio. Dick’s said his thoughts at the time were “I hoped I passed to
Jim as good a crew and their helpmates and as sound a Boat as I received from Len.” Jim’s thoughts were in thank-
ing Dick for the passing of a good submarine and crew that was recognized as being Excellent and awarded the Fire
Control “E” at the Change of Command. In emails shortly after the Reunion, both Skippers expressed their heartfelt
thanks to the Brinkman's and Jackson’s for their organizing efforts and all the others who put the Reunion together.
Dick also said: I have been proud to be associated with many good men/women in my life, but never more so than
with the SEA POACHER FAMILY. Shirley added that it was a privilege to be associated with each of you! Jim and
Lillian commented that their initial Sea Poacher Reunion could not have been better. He concluded with: I say again
my proudest moment was being associated with the BEST OF THE BEST, THE SEA POACHER SHIPMATES! All
of us in San Antonio agree with them! See you in Charleston!

Bill Buckley came up with a question on a command pin for Submarine COB's to wear. My initial reaction
was NO, but I was wrong. Yes, there is one. I went on the Internet and found photos of 4 COB's currently on missile
boats, and all were wearing some large oval gold colored pin under the SSBN Deterrent Patrol Pin, but I could not
make it out.
However, if you go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CPO_Command_Identification_Badge you will see it in
various versions for E7 through E9.
Now it is not considered a permanent badge and is surrendered when you leave the COB position. However,
it is authorized for sale on the Internet to the general public at many different sites. I found the cost as low as $23 and
up to $29 plus shipping. You can easily find places on the Internet or eBay to purchase it.
Not sure there are any rules on this for retirees, but if I had been a COB I would certainly proudly wear this
badge on my submarine vest.
CPO/COB COMMAND
IDENTIFICATION BADGE
This will be another spectacular Sea Poacher event. The Charleston Reunion Committee consists of Jon Nagle as
Chairman with Cal Cochrane, Vincent Sottile, and Frank Evans as Assistants. In addition, Bill Brinkman will be a Technical
Consultant and Lanny Yeske offered to do Publicity. Our hotel will be the Holiday Inn at Patriots Point in Mount Pleasant. Jon
writes the dates are Tuesday April 29 to Saturday May 3, 2014. The Committee has dreamed up a variety of activities to keep us
busy and entertained. Plans so far include the formal opening of the hospitality suite at 1200 on the 29th. Then, we will tour Fort
Moultrie on Sullivan’s Island. Ft Moultrie was the first American victory over the British in the Revolutionary war. It remained a
Fort guarding Charleston Harbor until 1942. After the tour we will have a Bar B Q dinner on Gold Bug Island made famous by
Edgar Allan Poe and his book “The Gold Bug.”
We have one day touring Drayton Hall Plantation and Middleton Plantation both dating to the early 1700’s plus lunch at
Middleton plantation. We will then tour downtown Charleston with choices of carriage rides, shopping at the market street
shops, walking tour, or civil war museum. You can also tour the Exchange building and see the original wall to the city, the dungeon where pirates were kept before they were hung, and where George Washington held a party. For those so inclined, we
will have a renewal of your marriage vows at The Citadel Chapel followed by lunch and the Cadet Long Grey Line Parade. We
will also have a tour of the CSS Hunley, the first submarine to sink a ship in wartime (civil war) and tours of the Fighting Lady
Yorktown (CV-10), the ship that wouldn’t die Destroyer Laffey (DD-724), and Submarine Clamagore (SS-343)
Of course, we will have a really special tolling of the bells, business meeting and banquet. For you golfers we will have
an outing available on the first day. We also plan a dinner cruise around Charleston Harbor and are considering squeezing in a
tour of Fort Sumter where the Civil War began. Overall it should be an exciting and thoroughly rewarding experience. We will
have a reunion registration form both at our website and in a future newsletter. So mark your calendars and I’ll see you there.

CHARLESTON, S.C. — Sharing a bond with those who fought beneath the waves, a group of submariners from the United
Kingdom paused Friday (17 February 2012) to pay tribute to the crews of the Confederate submarine H.L. Hunley, the first sub
in history to sink an enemy warship. During a brief ceremony in a grove where the three crews are buried, 78-year-old Dennis
Wade of the Portsmouth Submariners Association placed a poppy wreath at the gravesite and then saluted. The poppy is a
symbol of courage and sacrifice. Three other British submariners and a group of Confederate re-enactors looked on.
Friday marked the 148th anniversary of the Hunley's ill-fated mission. Two crews died while the sub was being made
operational. Then, in February 1864, the hand-cranked Hunley and its third crew left from Sullivan’s Island and sank the Union
blockade vessel Housatonic off the Charleston coast. But the Hunley never returned from the mission and, a dozen years after it was raised from the Atlantic, the reason for its sinking remains unclear. The historic vessel is being conserved at a conservation
lab in North Charleston.
"To any submariner in whatever nation there's a brotherhood because they are subject to the same type of intense training and
operating in the same conditions," said 67-year-old Bob Lewis of Portsmouth, who served in the Royal Navy for 35 years. "It
takes a special person to be a submariner and not everyone makes the grade." Prior to the ceremony, the association members
saw the Hunley. "Two crews lost their lives in bringing this vessel into its operational state and when it was in operation it was
the first successful submarine combat mission," he said. But would Lewis have gotten aboard the Hunley as a member of its
third crew? "I would like to think so," he said. "The thing that drives a submarine is its crew and the team spirit that generates in
that crew."
Paul Jevon, 52 and veteran of 22 years as a submariner in the Royal Navy said he felt sorry for all the crews. “It’s the early
development of the submarine service. If it wasn’t for them, we may have never been in submarines ourselves,” he said. In the
center of the grave site is a large monument to one of the Hunley crews. Beside it, black cloth shrouded two more monuments of
similar size. Those are dedicated to the other two crews and will be unveiled on Saturday, said Randy Burbage, a re-enactor and
member of the South Carolina Hunley Commission. “It’s pretty humbling to be a descendent of a Confederate veteran and
realize the Hunley crew and the mission it accomplished is internationally known and renowned and admired,” he said.
The association has been sending a wreath to the Hunley gravesite since 2004 where the last crew was buried in what has been
called the last Confederate funeral. Lewis said they were glad they finally got the chance to visit the submarine and gravesite.
