Dear Fox Valley Aero Club:

On behalf of the Academy of Model Aeronautics, please accept this

Certificate of Thanks from the Education Department.

In order for model aviation to grow, or for that matter simply survive, we

have to have outreach efforts like yours tak

ing place. These projects are

not easy to put together. Some modelers like to find th

eir “piece of

heaven” then pull up the ladder. Of course they’ve forg

otten the moment

someone shared this great activity with them!

Thanks to people like you and those around

you, our mission of “Bringing

Modelers Together” is taking place.

Fly and have Fun!

livery. I’ve seen many pictures of cockpits online or in thesimulator, so it was very interesting to see the actual displays, instruments and physical dimensions of the real thing up close, and in person.

Off topic, but did you happen to witness the transit ofVenus across the Sun on June 5th? A friend told meabout a trick with binoculars which could be used toview eclipses, and in this case, Venus’ outline on theSun’s disk. Simply point the binoculars with the bigend towards the Sun. Instead of looking throughthem (please don’t) you project the light comingthrough onto something for safe viewing—in mycase, a fence. The picture shows the small Venus dotas it crossed in front of the Sun (the other dark areas aremy neighbor’s tree). Pretty cool!

On to this issue... This month’s “Meet the Members” spotlightsDave Cotton on page 10. Hopefully you caught Dave’s articlelast month, “Three Men and A Plane”. Gary Stephens hassubmitted a report on the FVAC Pattern Contest, held June 2ndand 3rd—it can be found on page 11. As you read in PresidentTom’s report, the Club participated in the St. Charles MemorialDay parade. Photos of the build and helpers can be foundstarting on page 18.

‘Till next time, happy flying- Doug

Well, the flying season is nowwell under way—I guess I needto get out there and join in on thefun. My IMAC plane is still inmoth balls. I’ve got to make timeto get the cobwebs blown out andsee if I can still fly a straight line!

Last weekend I had the pleasureof attending Rockford Airfest.

The Thunderbirds were of course, awesome. Matt Chapmanappealed to us RC’ers with some 3-D flying in his Eagle 580.There were also some great static displays. Many aircraft wereopen for closer inspection, including flight stations, cargo areas, wheel wells and bomb bays. I was able to sit in the left seat ofmany aircraft, but most notable was an Airbus A300 in UPS

Last month I purchased the New Great Planes DirtyBirdy from Al’s Hobby Shop and attempted tocomplete the project before the FVAC pattern event!Unfortunately, both plane and event did not occurdue to expectations beyond my control. Anyway, Ithought you might like my input about thiswonderful kit that was just released by Great Planes.

This ARF plane is one of thebest I have acquired as well asbuild. The fuselage is glassresin and of the highestquality (paint) with bothwings and stabilizer all builtup and covered in red/whiteMono kote. The buildingtime for this model can bedone in a weekend if onechooses fixed gear vs.retracts! I decided to keepit simple and only go with

the fixed gear for the first one! Ifboth plane and piloting skillsexceed my “novice skills”, Imight look at a 2nd one withretracts.

The motor mount is the carbonstock (Great Planes) with a fiberglass cowl that is attached to thefuselage. At first I thought this was aminor point for the plane’s design, but it plays to my favor for easy

access to the engine and steerable nose wheel. The color of thispiece matches extremely well to the painted fuselage, whichagain exceeded my expectation. I did have to grind down partof the mount to access the steerable control horn. My engineselection is the OS .65 with a stock muffler. Once I get the planebalanced and a few flights under my wings, I will add the tunepipe for improved performance. Each wing panel is separateand is glued together with a spar made of aluminum andwood. All the parts fit exactly and assembly was quick andefficient.

The only disappointment is the size of the fuel tank! The tankfits extremely well inside the fuselage, but it is too small andshould have been larger for us guys who like to fly weekendsport vs. pattern events! I was informed that one can add asecond “nurse” tank for additional fuel and time. There isplenty of room to add this should one desire.

My radio installation consists of my Futaba 2.4 with five 3004

servos. I only modified the wing servo linkages using a swivelball joint on the servo arm vs. a “z” bend as recommended bythe manufacturer. The plane should come in around 8 -9 lbs.with only a moderate weight added to the tail. Only final stepis to use a heat gun/iron to take out

continued from previous pagethe wrinkles that only developed from thechange in temperature and humidity in mybasement. (Note: When I opened the box, thecovering on the wings, rudder and stabilizerwas flawless!)

Great Planes did an outstanding job withthis ARF and thanks for bringing back one ofthe famous pattern planes that flew back inthe 70’s! Many of our FVAC members whobuilt this plane and commented how great itflew and the new design should beconsistent with the built up andfoam/sheeting wings.

Attached are some pictures of the planedoing construction. I hope to have my firstflight later this month vs. waiting a year ortwo before the maiden flight!!

See you at the upcoming Kids Day and PigRoast!

We are still on budget for theyear and the checkbook islooking good. As I write this wehave just completed bothpattern contests and when youread this “Kids Day” willprobably be over as well.Participation in the patternevents was low and Rusty toldthose in attendance that it willprobably be moved to Muncienext year. I was disappointedthat no FVAC members flew atour regular pattern event.Hopefully the turnout for theIMAC event will be better.

Hats off to President Tom andall who helped with theMemorial Day parade float as itwas well received by those inthe crowd. Don’t forget we arealso entered in the “SwedishDays” parade in Geneva on June24th to promote the club and theFestival of Flight. Speaking ofthe Festival, I have just ordered

T-Shirts for theevent which weshould have for

sale at theJuly 12thmeeting.

In case you have not seen orheard, the gun range is upand cooking! Well up andfiring hot lead anyway.

In one of our discussionswith the police chief of St.Charles we had asked abouthow and if there would benotifications to civilians thatthe range was active andcaution by us to watch andavoid.

As you can see by the photosthere now is a sign as well asa flag noting an active range.Per previous discussions andin agreement with the Cityof St. Charles Policedepartment, try to notoverfly the range whenactive. When the range isnot active, over flight ispossible, but still remainwest of the 9-1-1 center.

eventeen pilots from seven statescame to fly in our pattern contest.(IL, WI, MO, MI, MN, IN, IA)

The weather for our event this year wasvery good compared to years past, because it did not rain during the contest. On Saturday we had temperatures ofnear 74 degrees with partly cloudy skiesand 20 mph winds with some cross windsmost of the day. The contest startedpromptly at 9am. We had a two and onehalf hour delay, starting at 10 am,because of the NOTAM issued for ourarea, as we are within the 30nm ringfrom ORD. Lunch was served during theNOTAM delay. Once the NOTAM was overwe flew again until we had 4 full roundsof flying completed for all classes. Weended flying at 4pm for the day.

A number of pilots and their wives met for dinner atthe Old Towne Pub a few miles from the field, onSaturday night. The food and drink were great andreasonably priced. About twelve people came todinner.

The weather on Sunday was better than Saturday aswe had fewer clouds and lower winds coming fromthe west at about 15mph. The temperature wasclose to 80 degrees. It was a near-perfect day forflying. Flying started at 9am and we finished the lasttwo rounds in all classes at approximately 11:30am.The field was available for open flying at 12 noon.

We had no issues or crashes to report. One canopywas recovered from the corn field after it blew offan airplane in flight.

Of the 17 flyers, 6 of them used glow engines; theother 11 used electric motors. 4 flyers used BrennerSharp’s CONTRA counter-rotating propeller systemon their electric pattern airplanes.

Show & Tell part 1

Gary Koester displayed his newfully loaded E-Flite Habu jetcomplete with the electricretracts. He says it’s fast!

Mark Hamilton brought alongthe Beech Staggerwing that hewon at the Christmas Party. It flies

well with the 3S 2200mah LiPo battery pack giving him around 12 minutes offlight time. He addedthe optional retracts, which needed somebeefing-up of themounting rails.

Dale Gathmandisplayed his newHangar 9 Corsair

powered by a Saito .82. Theplane sports a set of Hangar 9rotating retracts which hedemonstrated. The retractinggear sound is reminiscent of acoffee grinder, however theyreally look nice in operation.

At this point, KenKaiser reminded us that Kid’s

Day is coming up on June 9th and he is looking for volunteers to help out. TheSt. Charles K-9 unit will be on site to entertain the kids and adults. John Redmanwill be making an appearance as well.

Gary Stevens reminded us of the upcoming pattern contest on June 2nd

and 3rd. Everyone is welcome.

Mel Ziska gave us a quick overview of theClassic Pattern Contest which is on May 26th and27th this year. The contest centers around theold-fashioned AMA pattern which most everyonewith average flying skills will be comfortableflying. One or two classic pattern planes will beavailable to try out your pattern skills, which arevery simple and easy to do.

Tom reminded us that the day after the Kid’s Day on June 9th, the annualpig roast will be held on June 10th. Tom needs a head count of all those planningon attending so that he can make sure there is enough pig to go around. We hadaround 150 attendees last year!

The Memorial Day parade is coming on Monday May 28th this year andhelp will be needed to get the float ready. The Saturday prior will be floatbuilding day. Final assembly will be at Robart the day of the parade. Walkers inyellow shirts are needed.

Show & Tell part 2

Tom Flint broughtalong his J-3 Cub on floatswhich he painted to matchincluding the lightning boltwhich is on the prototype. Hecontinues to learn many thingslike do not retract your flaps 6”off the ground (great for makingpancakes.) Also, using a metalvice to hold batteries togetherwhen soldering, makes forsome neat fireworks. Enginesstart much easier with theneedle valve installed.

Tom Siwek brought his GreatPlanes ¼ scale RV-4 powered by an OS.75AX and guided by a Spektrum radiosystem. He added a remote glow igniter connector and a remote needle valveadjuster via a small-gauge music wire system. The plane is IMAA legal.

Sal Perno displayed his beautiful Top Flite Beech Staggerwing poweredby a Zenoah G-38. The plane is somewhat unique in that it has had two maidenflights. (Ask Sal about Locktite.) Sal ended up making major improvements in

the construction of thelanding gear mount whichwas originally hot gluedtogether and misaligned. He says that flying abiplane with the gearretracted can lead to somedisorientation because ofthe lack of referencewhich is present with fixedgear.

Dennis McFarlane demonstrated aFirebird Stratos RTF“teach yourself tofly” model byHorizon. While theplane does fly well, the self-teachingmay be a bit of astretch. It does havean electronic

stabilization system similar to the AS3X system in theGee Bee and Beast micro models.

Mel Ziska brought an example of the bind-and-fly Hanger 9 Taylorcraft. The ONLY thing that has to bedone is mount the included Zenoah G-26 engine. Even

the full pilot figure is included!

Kevin Kessler brought his Hangar 9 Eagle powered by a 120-size engine.Although the plane has 3 flights on it there are problems keeping the engine

running and mostflights ended updead stick. One ofthe landingsdemonstrated theglide capability ofthe plane which is

similar to a large rock! The gear did survive though wheremost others would have not.

Joe Boyd displayed his Jet Cat T-160 equippedComposite ARF Lightening. The 90-inch wingspan sport jetweighs in at an estimated 32lbs and is guided by a JR-12X radiosystem. There is also an on-board GPS monitoring systemwhich records the flight and its parameters. Joe received muchhelp from many of his modeling friends in completing thecomplex craft. Joe also found a source for custom made standswhich make handling and carrying the plane a breeze. Well ok,a lot easier anyway.

Show & Tell part 3

Todd “Rocket Man” Culbertson has beendoing some dumpster diving and hasproduced a really nice looking 35% Extra300 from the partial remains of anearth/plane meeting. The 108-inch plane ispowered by a DLA 112 and is equipped withall of the latest electronics utilizing aFromeco LiIon battery and regulator. Todddid an outstanding job of scratch buildingthe missing parts and fuselage.

Mark Knoppkie announced the unfortunatedemise of his TBM DV8R turbine.

Fortunately because of the positionof the engine, the turbine seems tohave survived as did most of theelectronics. A combination of C.G.error and wing incidence lead to theloss. Sorry Mark.

Dale Gathman displayed some reallynice pictures of a J-3 Cub and DaveMurray’s T-33.

A motion to adjourn wasmade by Alan Galle and Seconded byCindy McFarlane. The meeting wasadjourned at 9:15pm

Respectfully Submitted,Tony Sokol – Secretary FVAC

I have been out at the field a few timeslately and it is looking really good. Thegrass seems to be finally coming undercontrol. It seems to be short enough forthe tail draggers to be successful landingoff the runway.

We have hosted a couple of eventsalready this season and they have gone

well. Tom and his cohorts did a fantastic job with thefloat for the St. Charles Memorial day parade. Nowwe have our next 2 events to look forward too. Thekids fly is on track for June 9Th. Please bring a planeand buddy box and plan on spending a great dayeducating and entertaining both the kids and theirparents. This is always a good way to give back to thecommunity. The very next day gets to be our day. Thanks to Tom for heading up the annual pig roast. This event is a must. Bring a plane and an appetite. You won't be disappointed.

The month of July will bring our Festival of Flight. This will be a strange year for me because I will beavailable to help with set up and plan on asking for alittle help with field set up mid-week the week of theevent. I then will be out of town for the weekend butback Sunday to see the end of the festival and helpput things away. It has been many years since I havemissed this event. It is one of my favorites. I knowPaul will do a stellar job with this festival and willhave no problems because of the many members thatalways step up to make our events the best.

See you at the field, Greg Bohler
