PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Dale Gathman [email protected]

What a Great year so far. I have been fortunate this year to be able to not only attend our Windy City Warbirds & Classics event, but also the Air Supremacy

over Goshen WCA event in Goshen, Indiana. The camaraderie at these WCA (Warbird and Classics Alliance) events is just fantastic, and as I spend more time with these pilots and friends, it just gets better and better. One thing I have learned is that the more you put into these events, the more you get out of them, both in improvement of RC knowledge and skills, and pure enjoyment of our great hobby. If you haven’t been able to make it to any of the WCA events yet, there are still two events to go. Warbirds & Classics over the Midwest is in Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin on August 17-19, and the Indiana Warbird Campaign is in Muncie, Indiana August 31-September 2.

Fun Fly. Unfortunately, I was unable to attend our Whiffle Ball Touch & Go fun fly due to storm damage to the power grid that feeds my place of employment (I ended up having to work). Thanks to Jeff Peca for running the event, and thanks to Tom Flint who kept me informed of the progress of the event through text messages. I got a feel for the fun happening at the field through his communications. I can’t wait to see the pictures, and am looking forward to our next Fun Fly, the Bomb Drop and Spot Landing on October 7.

Upcoming activities. Don’t forget, our upcoming Cub Fly up on August 12. This is a sanctioned event this year and open to all AMA pilots. It will be followed by a Night Fly that evening, which is a lot of fun both for pilots and spectators. Then, our Festival of Flight is scheduled for September 9. The Festival is open to all AMA pilots and all types and sizes of aircraft are welcome. This is the second biggest event of our year, and we need volunteers to run it just like we needed for the Warbirds & Classics. I will have a sign-up sheet at the August meeting, and will also be asking for volunteers via email. Please help out for one 2 hour shift if you possibly can. The more volunteers we get, the less hours we have to put in, which gives us more time to fly and enjoy other’s flights and aircraft. I hope you can attend, and bring a plane to fly. Tell all your friends.

Fly, Fly, Fly (and build). I hope you all have time to get out to the field to fly, or at least to visit your fellow pilots and friends. I am continually impressed by the awesomeness of our members, both in their piloting ability and in their building ability. You can really learn a lot just by talking to our members, and all are very willing to share their knowledge and experiences. I hope to see you at the field and at our August meeting.

Don’t forget Camaraderie - Introduce yourself to someone you don’t know.

Happy Flying! Dale

Whiffle Ball Touch and Go Results:

We had our second Fun Fly of the season on Saturday, July 22. Early storms and afternoon heat kept the pilot turn out low. The event was the Whiffle Ball Touch and Goes. A whiffle ball was tied to your plane

with a 30-foot piece of string. The goal was to get the ball to hit inside of a circle on the runway. I have done this event quite a few times but this was by far the most competitive group of pilots I have flown against. Like bomb drop, it is imperative to watch the airplane at all times. I believe it was JT that commented that you can’t watch the plane, ball and runway at the same time. JT had to switch to a back-up plane and still managed a second place finish. At the end of three rounds, the results were as follows:

1. Jeff Peca2. John Turner3. Jeff Mrachek4. Rob Sampson5. Cliff Fullhart6. Alan Galle7. Tom Flint

A Special thanks to our score keeper and judge, Donna Mrachek and Maury Misner.

FROM OUR EDITOR Susan Galle [email protected]

So, did you miss me?? I know you are just waiting in great and patient anticipation and sitting on the edge of your seats waiting to hear it all from your editor-in-chief (say, I really like that title too - I might incorporate that one more often!) but here I am!! I do

apologize for the lateness of this edition but due to my finally having fun (and not being stressed or worried), I actually had a “real” vacation and I slept (like a log), laughed and ate lots of fresh seafood too - it was amazing and wonderful to say the least. Not to mention the fact that we saw some old friends and had a great time! But now it’s back to the routine (it all has to end sometime) and I’m fine with that too. With that being said, I will keep this short and won’t bore you anymore since there are a ton of pics to share so on with the show! Hope you enjoy them (as this edition was truly a “labor of love.”) .

That’s all for now, Susan

Intercom A Jumbojet was coming into London Heathrow after a long-haul trip from Singapore and the captain opened the intercom and said 'Ladies and gentlemen we are now making our final approach into Heathrow, we hope you've enjoyed flying with RarelyCrash Airways and that we'll see you again soon, please have a safe onward journey' at which point he forgot to turn the intercom off. He turned to the co-pilot and said 'well Roger what plans do you have for the rest of the day?' the co-pilot replied 'My wife will be at the hotel, Mike, and she's got seats booked for a West-End show, I don't know which one, what plans do you have?' The cabin crew and passengers meanwhile are quite enjoying this change from the norm. The captain continued 'as you know my divorce was finalised last week so I'll be taking a long soak in the bath before ordering dinner in my room. I'm thinking that after that I'll call the pretty new blonde stewardess working upstairs, Susanne I think her name is, and take her out for a drink then take her back to my room and give her a damn good seeing to’. At that moment the passengers cheered loudly and in the upper deck Susanne realized the intercom was still on by accident and she had to get downstairs and let them know. She ran up the aisle and tripped headlong over an old ladys handbag which was poking out into the aisle. The old lady looked down at the spread-eagled young woman and said 'there's no need to hurry love, he's going to have a bath first'

Blonde Stewardess An airline captain was breaking in a new blonde stewardess. The route they were flying had a layover in another city. Upon their arrival, the captain showed the stewardess the best place for airline personnel to eat, shop and stay overnight. The next morning, as the pilot was preparing the crew for the day's route, he noticed the new stewardess was missing. He knew which room she was in at the hotel and called her up wondering what happened. She answered the phone, crying, and said she couldn't get out of her room. "You can't get out of your room?" The captain asked, "Why not?" The stewardess replied: "There are only three doors in here," she sobbed, "one is the bathroom, one is the closet, and one has a sign on it that says 'Do Not Disturb'!"

Blondes on a Plane A blonde gets to fly in an airplane for the first time. She has never been on an airplane anywhere and was very excited and tense. As soon as she boarded the plane, a Boeing 747, she started jumping in excitement, running over seat to seat and starts shouting, "BOEING! BOEING!! BOEING!!! BO....." She sort of forgets where she is, even the pilot in the cock-pit hears the noise. Annoyed by the goings on, the Pilot comes out and shouts "Be silent!" There was pin-drop silence everywhere and everybody is looking at the blonde and the angry Pilot. She stared at the pilot in silence for a moment, concentrated really hard, and all of a sudden started shouting, "OEING! OEING! OEING! OE...."
