McKinsey & Company
Twitter: @McKinsey
McKinsey & Company helps organisations across the private, public, and
social sectors create the change that matters. They help their clients identify
and set the direction toward their most important goals. Today, McKinsey go
further: working together to turn these ambitious goals into reality.
They partner with their clients to transform their organisations. This means
embedding digital, analytics, and design into core processes and mind-sets;
building capabilities that help organisations and people to thrive in an ever-
changing context; and developing excellence in execution to ensure that
actions translate into outcomes, quickly and sustainably.
McKinsey recognises in our changing world, powerful new automation
technologies such as machine learning, artificial intelligence (AI), and
advanced robotics are already transforming the Australian economy,
workplace, education system and community. These technologies present an
enormous opportunity to restore momentum to the Australian economy and
extend the nation’s 30-year economic boom in an inclusive way.
In a new report, Australia’s automation opportunity: Reigniting productivity and
inclusive income growth, they outline the impacts of automation across three
scenarios, including slow-paced adoption, mid-point adoption and fast-paced
adoption. The report sets out why and how Australia must push for the win–
win scenario of inclusive growth by pursuing actions that both accelerate
automation and adoption and share its benefits.
Policy makers, business leaders and educational institutions will need to
respond to a range of implications of automation and AI, including rising
unemployment and income inequality, growing disparities between cities and
rural communities, shifts in the global competitiveness of our export-oriented
sectors, and reskilling and redeploying a large number of displaced workers.
McKinsey believe it’s a vision well worth focusing on. With foresight, proactive
leadership, and a commitment to act, Australia can capture the opportunity
offered by automation, manage the transition, and ensure the gains are
broadly shared.
McKinsey & Company have been members of CEDA since 2012.

Rio Tinto
Twitter: @RioTinto
For 146 years, Rio Tinto has been pioneering the production of materials
essential to human progress. Their minerals and metals help make modern
life work. They are found in smartphones, planes, cars, hospitals and
throughout the home. Through the products they deliver, and the partnerships
they create and nurture, Rio Tinto works to make a difference in local
communities and in the world at large.
By investing throughout the cycle, they have developed a suite of high-quality,
expandable assets that are positioned for decades of premium production.
Their organisation is centered on these assets, which themselves are
managed through four product groups: Iron Ore, Aluminium, Copper &
Diamonds and Energy & Minerals. In turn, these four product groups are
supported by their global functions, and by their Growth & Innovation and
Commercial groups.
Their strategy is founded on asset portfolio, on building a high-performance
culture across the business, and on maintaining discipline when allocating
capital. This allows them to focus on maximising cash through a value-over-
volume approach, and on delivering superior returns to their shareholders.
As they deliver their strategy, 47,500 people worldwide work with a common
code of conduct and the same set of values: safety, teamwork, respect,
integrity and excellence. Safety is their number one priority, and always comes
first at Rio Tinto.
They continue to pioneer progress for a better future. Every day, they look for
ways to make their business stronger – driving productivity and performance
from mine through to market.
Rio Tinto have been members of CEDA since 1989.

about CEDA
CEDA is an independent, not-for-profit membership organisation. CEDA
identifies policy issues that matter for Australia’s future and pursue solutions that
deliver better economic, social and environmental outcomes for Australia.
CEDA's cross-sector membership of 770 spans every state and territory and
includes Australia's leading businesses, community organisations, government
departments and academic institutions.
Membership
Organisations join CEDA because CEDA delivers exposure to high level thought
leadership, timely briefings on issues of economic importance, access to
networking and brand reach through sponsorship and hosting opportunities. In
addition to high profile public events, CEDA also delivers regular member only
events for employees of member organisations and exclusive Trustee only
boardroom briefings for senior executives from member organisations. These
provide a unique opportunity for peer-to-peer knowledge exchange and for
speakers and attendees to talk candidly on issues.
Research and policy
CEDA’s only agenda is to pursue good public policy to progress Australia’s
economic and social development. Since 1960 CEDA has produced more than
3000 publications, research reports and articles highlighting emerging issues and
directions in a diverse range of policy areas. Research in 2019 will focus on
Australia’s long-term budget position, the effects of temporary migration, a survey
of Australian businesses on their approach to economic development, and new
approaches to addressing entrenched disadvantage.
