CARRYALL 8mm crochet hook Gianna yarn in 2 colours 043 Sun Kissed Coral 3 balls and 046 American Red 3 balls Beg in centre of base of bag, using Red, Chain 4, join with sl st to form ring. [32dc] Rnd5: 2 ch (as first dc) 1dc into top of first dc, 1 dc in next 3 dc, *2 dc into top of next dc, 1 dc in next 3 dc *, repeat * to * till end of round, join to top of 2 ch with slip stitch. [40dc] Rnd6: 2 ch (as first dc) 1dc into top of first dc, 1 dc in next 4 dc, *2 dc into top of next dc, 1 dc in next 4 dc *, repeat * to * till end of round, join to top of 2 ch with slip stitch. [48dc] Continue in increasing in this way until the diameter of the circle measures 20cm. (I have 8 rounds of increasing in the base of my bag.) 64 st per round. Using Coral, continue to work each round without increasing to the required depth. My bag measures 24cm from base to end of the Coral colour.

Straps Join in Red and pick up 6 dc from the top edge of the bag. Working back and forth using dc, work strap until it measures the right length to suit you. My strap measures 64cm. Next row, join strap to opposite side of bag with dc. Cut yarn. Weave in ends. Optional ideas for the bag. 1) Add a contrast colour to the top of the bag with 2 rows of dc along the top edge. 2) Add a frill or scallop edge to the top of the bag, using dc into first st, ch5, dc into next st, all along the top edge. 3) Using chain stitches, chain 2 ties as long as you like for the bag closure. Tie them in a bow. Attach beads to the ends of the ties. 4) Line bag with pretty cotton fabric and sew in a magnetic closure. 5) Sew on a toggle button on the outside of bag and crochet a chain loop to secure the closure. 6) Use Needle Felting to add surface decoration to the bag.

Other ideas Using these same techniques for increasing and creating depth to your crochet, you can improvise lots of other patterns for yourself. Change colours to create stripes. Use up bits of yarn left from other projects. Make hats, bags, flower pots, soft vases, round placemats, drink coasters, pot holders etc etc. Add several different coloured round to a plain white T-shirt or bag to personalise it! Experiment with thinner yarns, sequins, beads, recycle old t-shirts by cutting strips of fabric and crocheting them.
