2011 Global Connections Dinner SeriesThe Global Connections Dinner Series provides opportunities for intimate conversation in private settings. Members of the Council’s Board of Directors, Chairman’s Circle, and Directors’ Circle host dinners in their homes or other private venues and personally select the topic and theme. Experts, artists, scholars, and visiting dignitaries are invited to lead the evenings’ discussions. Funds raised through the series support the Council’s ability to provide a public education forum for Chicago-area residents interested in world affairs.

The 2011 Global Connections Dinners covered topics such as China’s economic rise, the Arab Spring, and Brazil’s burst onto the global stage. Memorable speakers included United States managing editor and assistant editor of the Financial Times Gillian Tett, who discussed the economic crisis in Europe; professor of business and history at Harvard University Niall Ferguson, who discussed the future of Western civilization; and professor of Middle East politics at the London School of Economics Fawaz Gerges, who discussed the crisis in Syria, among many others.

2012 Global Leadership Awards DinnerEach year, The Chicago Council honors distinguished individuals for their outstanding achievements in the realms of international relations, global thought leadership, and philanthropy. Global Leadership Awards are presented to an international leader, a national leader, and a Chicago leader in world affairs.

At the tenth annual Global Leadership Awards Dinner on April 19, 2012, The Chicago Council on Global Affairs presented awards to local honoree Glenn F. Tilton, chairman of the Midwest Region for JPMorgan Chase & Co.; national honoree Lee H. Hamilton, director of the Center on Congress at Indiana University and former vice chair of the 9/11 Commission; and international honoree Rt. Hon. Helen Clark, administrator of the United Nations Development Programme.

This annual fundraising event has become one of the highlights of the Council’s calendar. Generous contributions from Chicago Council members and Chicago’s top civic, corporate, and philanthropic leaders make it possible for the Council to bring the world to Chicago and to take Chicago’s ideas to the world.
