Funambol™ Mobile Application Server V3

Want the features and benefi ts of RIM on low cost, mass market phones?

Nearly 1 billion phones and mobile devices will ship this year. The “killer app” for the mobile industry this year is to make the world’s 1.4 billion email boxes ubiquitous-ly accessible on those phones. Yet most carriers and enterprises have not deployed this service to the mass market.

Why? Because up to now email mobil-ity has been available only via proprietary software that requires very expensive de-vices. Blackberry and SmartPhone de-vices are too big, expensive, and hard to use for the mass market. That’s why we created Funambol v3.

“Push” email isn’t just reading text through a browser, it’s receiving real-time notifi ca-

tions of new mail delivery. It’s editing, writing, forwarding messages, and ac-cepting meeting invitations. It’s viewing attachments. All this is possible now on commodity devices thanks to the OMA/SyncML standards. You can update cal-endars, pull down the latest corporate phone list, and track to-do lists over the air. It’s all supported on hundreds of mil-lions of phones. Funambol makes it hap-pen with a scalable, fl exible server that supports the widest possible range of de-vices worldwide.

the face of intermittent connectivity and hundreds of diff erent device types.

Funambol’s mobile application server pro-vides these services and more. Funambol is open source software, providing a scal-able, powerful, and fl exible platform with the features and APIs you need on the cli-ent and the server. It’s carrier-grade, and fi ts the needs of mobile network operators and enterprises alike. With over 250,000 downloads so far, it’s the world’s fastest growing mobile platform.

The Funambol server provides push email and PIM synchronization functionality, leveraging the Open Mobile Alliance Data Synchronization and Device Management (OMA DS/DM) protocols, commonly called SyncML.

Push email lets users send, receive, view, and forward emails with attachments, as well as accept meeting invitations using their handset’s built-in client. The Funambol server also provides over-the-air, bi-directional synchronization of PIM data. The server keeps track of device capabilities, and has optimizations that support multiple clients for a single data set, so you get the right updates to each device in the shortest time.

In addition, the Funambol server provisions software and updates to client devices, while handling remote device configuration, monitoring, and management. The Funambol server thus lowers your administration and operational costs over time.

The Funambol server integrates with existing enterprise infrastructures via data and application connectors. It also fits into your security environment with multiple authentication modes, digital signature support, and SSL encryption.

Funambol client plug-ins provide push email update and PIM data synchronization functionality for phones, PDAs, and other devices that do not have their own OMA DS/SyncML capabilities. The plug-ins let your mobile device’s embedded software leverage OMA standards to synchronize email, calendar entries, contacts, and other information with PCs or email/calendar servers.
