President Ronald Reagan made this designation in 1983, with purple as the representative color for this cause. He would later be diagnosed with this disease. Alzheimer’s is a disease of the brain that causes problems with memory, thinking and behavior and is not a normal part of aging. Some facts about the disease: At the time President Regan established the national awareness month, fewer than 2 million Americans had Alzheimer’s; today, the number of people with the disease has soared to nearly 5.4 million. This number is projected to triple by 2050, barring medical breakthroughs. Of the 5.4 million Americans with Alzheimer's, an estimated 5.2 million people are age 65 and older. The remaining approximately 200,000 are considered to have younger-onset Alzheimer's. Some factors that affect this disease: Physical exercise: Regular physical exercise may help lower the risk of some types of dementia. Evidence suggests exer- cise may directly benefit brain cells by increasing blood and oxygen flow to the brain. Diet: What you eat may have its greatest impact on brain health through its effect on heart health. The best current evi- dence suggests that heart-healthy eating patterns, such as the Mediterranean diet, also may help protect the brain. A Mediterra- nean diet includes relatively little red meat and emphasizes whole grains, fruits and vegetables, fish and shellfish, and nuts, olive oil and other healthy fats. November is National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness

Month.

President Ronald Reagan made this designation in 1983, with purple as the representative color for

this cause. He would later be diagnosed with this disease.

Alzheimer’s is a disease of the brain that causes problems with memory, thinking and behavior and

is not a normal part of aging.

Some facts about the disease:

At the time President Regan established the national awareness month, fewer than 2 million Americans had Alzheimer’s; today, the number of people with the disease has soared to nearly 5.4

million. This number is projected to triple by 2050, barring medical breakthroughs.

Of the 5.4 million Americans with Alzheimer's, an estimated 5.2 million people are age 65 and older. The remaining approximately 200,000 are considered to have younger-onset

Alzheimer's.

Some factors that affect this disease:

Physical exercise: Regular physical exercise may help lower the risk of some types of dementia. Evidence suggests exer-cise may directly benefit brain cells by increasing blood and oxygen flow to the brain.

Diet: What you eat may have its greatest impact on brain health through its effect on heart health. The best current evi-

dence suggests that heart-healthy eating patterns, such as the Mediterranean diet, also may help protect the brain. A Mediterra-nean diet includes relatively little red meat and emphasizes whole grains, fruits and vegetables, fish and shellfish, and nuts, olive oil and other healthy fats.

The Alzheimer’s Association has a website that offers a great deal

of information and resources to help both those with the disease

and their caregivers, www.alz.org. Their 24/7 Helpline is 800.272.3900.

The Indiana Chapter has a Champagne and Chocolate Fundraiser scheduled for November 13 in Indianapolis. Visit www.alz.org/indiana/ for more details and for additional information and resources.

Historic Fun!

In October, Parkview’s AOA group hosted a trip to the Historic Fort Wayne, named for Mad Anthony Wayne. We had

a great turnout, as there were participants from the Parkview, Jorgensen and Renaissance Point YMCA’s.

There was much to learn about life in the fort and the surrounding

area. The current fort reproduction was designed (and quite state

of the art for its time) by Major John Whistler. Major Whistler’s

grandson, also John, painted “Whistler’s Mother,” making the

painting’s subject the daughter-in-law of Major Whistler.

It was a lovely,

cool Fall day and we were able to enjoy additional information

while eating our yummy Subway sandwiches. We thank Dupont Rd

Subway owner Rick Rutledge for giving our group a discount!

The Recipe below is straight from the Kitchen of Major Whistler.

Enjoy!
