ChallengeA Kansas City-based Web hosting and managed service company found themselves faced with an urgent need to identify secure data center storage space to accommodate rapid growth and resolve accessibility and support issues. The organization operated in a virtual environment with no physical office and was experiencing 50% year-over-year growth. Their list of clients included industry-leading companies with strict requirements for maintaining data integrity. The need for additional space that offered protection against environmental and man-made threats, while providing reliable tech support, was growing. In addition, their current data storage provider limited the scope of access, potentially impeding the company’s ability to service clients. Building a data center was not a cost-effective option and would pose as a disruption to business operations.

SolutionAfter a discovery session, Cavern Technologies proposed a shared space, 125 feet below ground as a trial arrangement. This allowed the company to evaluate service and accessibility before contracting long term. Cavern’s dedicated tech support team provided continuous monitoring and delivered rapid response24x7x365. Because of Cavern’s underground location, protection systems and rigorous security measures, concerns of environmental and man-made threats were alleviated. In addition, Cavern had the square footage in place to offer scalable and customizable colocation options to accommodate growth.

ResultsWithin three months of the trial arrangement, the company transitioned hardware assets, including application servers, to a 200-square-foot data suite in Cavern’s contemporary bunker. The company immediately realized a 25% cost savings over their previous above-ground facility, due in part to Cavern’s ambient 65-degree temperature and lower utility costs. The consistent humidity levels optimized system performance. With Cavern’s tech support, the company is able to guarantee 99.9% uptime and comprehensive redundancy. By partnering with Cavern, the company has increased business with major technology players. Referencing one multimillion-dollar client, a partner in the company notes, “Once they toured the facility, and with the security of the underground, protected from storms…the choice was obvious.” Another company principal goes on to say, “Cavern made their space ‘our space’ with 24-hour access. If we have concerns, we pick up the phone and speak with a live person. Working with Cavern feels like a true partnership - easy to do business with.”

Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth Healthcare System Case Study“Our relationship with Cavern Technologies is not the traditional IT landlord/tenant relationship. They have been our partner –Cavern has accommodated and guided SCLHS as our need for power, cooling and space increased. We look forward to a long term partnership.” Kent Gaff, CIO

Challenge The IT staff of a Kansas-based healthcare system, Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth Health System, operating 12 hospitals, 4 stand-alone clinics and 2 affiliate hospitals across the nation, began to design and build the infrastructure to support a new clinical information system, integrating and aligning 18-20 IT systems.

With the development of the new interface, it was imperative for SCLHS to choose a top notch data center facility to partner with, in order to back-up data, provide disaster recovery and ensure business continuity. The company required that the data center facility provide private, dedicated suites, in a highly secure, regulated environment and reviewed the capabilities of several different data center facilities. SCLHS also considered building their own facility and looked at 40 different property sites during their review. Along with the review of sites and data center facilities, Lockton Insurance was brought in to perform a Risk Assessment.

SolutionAfter attending capabilities presentations from several data center providers and considering an option to build their own data center facility, SCLHS chose Cavern Technologies as their data center partner. Cavern’s unique features made them the obvious choice for SCLHS-- highly secure underground infrastructure, low utility costs, AT&T redundancy, 24x7x365 access, a cost-effective , fully integrated solution, quick speed-to-market, and meeting all of the stringent SCLHS requirements.

ResultsCavern Technologies produced an enterprise solution to meet Sisters of Charity Health System’s unique business requirements. The project is a testimony to Cavern’s ability to meet and exceed Client expectations through providing customized and cost-effective data center solutions with rigorous security measures, in an environmentally safe facility. As an added plus, Cavern’s underground infrastructure, with ambient 65 degree temperatures and consistent humidity levels, has lowered utility costs and optimized system performance. That’s in addition to the 22% cost savings that SCLHS has realized over the option to build their own facility. Cavern’s dedicated technical support team-- that provides continuous monitoring, 24x7x365 response and 99.99% uptime-- has also received high praise for customer service from the IT professionals at SCLHS.

Cavern Technologies had the infrastructure in place, the added benefit of speed-to-market, a scalable and customized colocation solution that could accommodate future growth, with an attractive RODCI.
