What Will i Be aBle to do When i’m not in class?one of the best things about becoming a full-time student at Nescot is having the chance to get involved in activities, trips, sport – and even having a say in how the college works through our student Voice forums.

enrichment programmeenrichment at Nescot is an opportunity to meet other students around the college, make a difference to someone else’s life and have fun at the same time. every student under 19 participates in on-course enrichment each year as part of their programme of study. all students also have the opportunity to be involved in cross college enrichment, such as Diwali, comic relief etc, which introduces you to other aspects of your course and highlights other skills that you might have. as part of your enrichment programme you can also be involved in community

projects, volunteering, mentoring other students as well as taking part in charity events.

haVing a Voice, Being heard, getting inVolVedthere are lots of opportunities to get involved and make a difference at Nescot. an example of how you can have your say is through ‘student Voice’. each tutor group elects one or more students to represent their views at student Voice meetings. every term there is a meeting for all the representatives with the principal and other senior staff so that you can tell them your views about your course and your experience of being a student at Nescot. every query raised is answered and feedback responses are available on Weblearn, in tutor meetings, and are published on large posters around the college.

“There’s so much to get involved in at Nescot. I am going to be a peer mentor to level1 business students who are hoping to progress to level 2. I’m looking forward to helping them but it will also give me a chance to develop management, leadership and motivational skills that will add to my CV. “

inspired by the 2012 olympics and titled ‘Fabulously British’, this year’s show set out to demonstrate the latest skills and techniques on offer at the Nescot Hair department while raising money for celebrity hairdresser trevor sorbie’s my New Hair campaign.

students from the department not only had to develop a look and find a model, but were then given the opportunity to style and showcase their creations for a panel of extremely knowledgeable industry insiders.

Judge yesmin o’Brien, artistic director at sean Hanna, had come to Nescot fresh from the catwalk shows of paris Fashion Week, yet was still very impressed with the talent on show by the students.

‘staggering! What these youngsters are doing with only one or two years training. it’s not just the creativity and concept but some of the skill we’ve seen here today has been exceptional. it’s so good to find a college where the tutors are in touch with what’s going on in industry. you can see the difference in what the students are creating,’ she said.

this year’s show was the second ever run by the college but is becoming an established event in the local hair and beauty community. as well as yesmin, judges included adam Hershel Jones from l’oreal, sam ross of sam ross epsom and ray Bolton of monroes leatherhead.

the show and prizes were sponsored by l’oreal, salon services, House of Fraser, paul mitchell and trevor sorbie. style connect were also involved with donating outfits for the models.

at school i thought that it was just about powerpoint and spreadsheet, but coming into college it goes much more indepth; learning about programming, routers, fixing equipment...

i work on the support desk – my employer creates electronic till software used by shops. so if there’s a problem with a till, i talk through it on the phone and might have to dial into remote assistance to help.

as an apprentice, i’m getting valuable experience as well as the diploma – and experience is what employers are looking for...

the campus has got a good feel to it and the environment you’re in affects the way in which you learn. i’d say to anyone interested in it, come along to a Nescot open Day

nescot childcare students were rewarded for their hard work at an evening ceremony to recognise the outstanding progress made over the last year.

‘We’re looking for the whole package,’ said early years tutor Janet graham, ‘not just getting a*s, but taking that knowledge out on work placements and applying it – doing the job well,’ she said.

for emma Benstead, 17, from tadworth, who was named student of the year in her group, it was the reaction of her family that really helped the news to sink in.

fellow student of the year winner gemma Wiltshire, 17, from sutton, was also thrilled to be presented with her award by her tutor.

‘i think i was shocked and pleased at the same time,’ she said.

for emma and gemma, who are now studying for their level 3 diploma in childcare at nescot, winning the awards has brought home to them how far they have progressed since joining the college.

terriBle infants gets Wonderful reVieWs for upstage right upstage right, Nescot college performing arts company, had good reason for suffering from stage fright when their performance of the terrible infants was attended by the play’s original writer and director, oliver lansley.

lansley, who has won international acclaim with the collection of dark morality tales heard about the student group’s plans for his play and was keen to see the results for himself.

‘Having performed the piece over 160 times myself, it was strange but wonderful to see the different interpretation upstage right had of my work including the use of dance and the interplay between the two narrators. i was really impressed by their creativity and skill,’ he said.

upstage right’s interpretation was the first ever amateur use of the text and received standing ovations from a packed house during both their evening performances. the group brought together musical, vocal, dance, physical theatre, puppetry, acrobatic and acting skills,

honed over the previous two years at Nescot college, to achieve what is widely agreed to be their most accomplished performance to date.

‘When we found out that oliver lansley was coming to watch our performance it did make us pretty nervous but we were determined not to let ourselves and the college down. everyone was making sure they were at the top of their game that night and i think it really showed,’ said olly retter, who took the unusually physical role of the narrator.

upstage right has built an impressive reputation for entertaining, thought provoking and professionally executed performances since its creation in 2010. With recent successes including the hard hitting impact of collision, looking at the devastating effect of unsafe driving, and musical extravaganza, the show must Go on, commemorating performers lost to HiV/aids in collaboration with the terrence Higgins trust for World aids Day, audiences have been thrilled entertained and moved by their creative skills.

A collaboration between Nescot Head of PfLAW, Lynn Reddick, and a charity supporting youngsters with autism has seen changes to SeN provision announced during the Queen’s speech to Parliament recently; the launch of a national College Inclusion Charter and a visit by US President obama’s Assistant Secretary of State for education, dr Alexa Posny, to meet students and staff at the Surrey college.

The finished at School campaign was launched by the charity Ambitious About Autism to address the unhappy lot of many autistic school leavers, who are unable to access education or employment after their statement of special educational needs ends at 16.

The campaign came to the attention of Lynn Reddick, whose work with learning disabled youngsters has seen her receive a Star Award and an invitation to consult at 10 downing Street under Gordon Brown.

‘When you realise that just one in four youngsters with autism access any sort of education after finishing school you can see just how difficult the situation is. They are left with no goals, ambition or hope of escaping

dependency on benefits or care,’ says Lynn Reddick.

The campaign received a boost when the commitment was made in the Queen’s speech to Parliament to extend the legal right to educational support up to the age of 25 for young disabled people.

The Charter launch on monday may 14 by fe minister John Hayes at the Ambitious About Autism Annual Lecture was also attended by US Assistant Secretary of State for education dr Alexa Posny.

The following day a contingent of US education officials, college principals and directors accompanied dr Posny to Nescot College to see what was happening on the ground that has such a positive effect on outcomes for students with special educational needs.

While dr Posny was pleased to see courses for youngsters with disabilities being offered in a mainstream local college, it was the independence and employment-focused approach which had the most impact on the visitors.

Asked if there was anything she had

seen on her visit to Britain which would inform her work in the US she said:

‘Absolutely. As part of our visit to Nescot College, the depth and breadth of the career programmes offered to students with autism was awesome. It included the building of a mini mall, on the job training in upholstery work, running cafes, developing and selling pottery and so much more. This is what is needed – a wide breadth of work options for all students. Three students will become designers of video games and they talked about the market research in which they have become involved. I was humbled by their knowledge, intensity and most importantly, their complete engagement.’

It is this potential which drives the work of Lynn Reddick and her team. Lynn’s students go on to find employment in hospitality, horticulture and retail and many other areas where their skills are extremely valued. The contrast between these youngsters, with careers, social lives and prospects, and the fate of those not lucky enough to live near a college offering suitable training is unacceptable to the team at Nescot.

progressionstudents will be supported to identify possible employment support agencies in their local area to help them secure work once the course is finished.
