remind foreign residents of the
importance of being registered
on the municipal roll.
The campaign aims at
informing of the benefits being

receiving discounts on
municipal taxes, or on
activities organised by the
town hall.
Being on the municipal roll
is also an indispensable
requirement to be able to vote
in the forthcoming European
elections.
The councillor for Foreign
Residents, Katia Westerdahl,
said the town hall has printed a
total of 5,000 leaflets in order
to inform as many foreign
residents as possible.
They are available in three
languages (Spanish, English
and Finnish), and can be
picked up at official and
municipal premises.
Those who wish to register
on the municipal roll, may go
to the Foreign Residents

A SCuLPTuRE of Catholic Monarchs,
Fernando and Isabel, was unveiled in Fuengirola.
Hundreds of local residents and visitors
packed into the square where the town hall
used to be to commemorate the role of the
‘Reyes Catolicos’ in the history of Spain.
The mayor, Esperanza oña, was
accompanied by members of the local council
to inaugurate the sculpture and the square
named after the Catholic Monarchs. She said
that the statue represents the unity and
diversity of Spain.
The doors of the old town hall, now a hotel,
were opened for the Ensemble La Danserye
musicians, dressed in medieval costume,
before they paraded the local streets.
The three-metre, 800-kilo, bronze
sculpture, created by local artist Rosario
Garcia, was unveiled. It has cost €20,000,
paid by the unicaja Social Acts Department.
The monarchs are looking towards Sohail
Castle, taken by Christian troops in 1485.
The mayor explained that Spain is the
oldest kingdom and that knowing its history
helps us to understand the present and prepare
for the future. “Thanks to Isabel and
Fernando” she said, “Spain exists.” She
continued to say that Spain has a right to be
proud of itself.
In the run-up to this event there have been
conferences, exhibitions and other events
focusing on the Catholic Monarchs, allowing
thousands to get to know them better.
Hundreds attended the unveiling of the sculpture of Isabel and Fernando.

fuengirola will offer a new and
innovative tourist attraction on its
beaches from this summer.
Three leisure floating platforms will
be installed off the beaches of
fuengirola, los boliches and
Carvajal.
These platforms will cover an area
of up to 800m2 and will have slides
and water attractions for beachgoers
to enjoy.
in accordance with safety
regulations, these platforms will have
lifeguards and lifejackets at the users’
disposal.
The councillor for beaches, ana
Mula, said the platforms are expected
to be open to the public from May 15
for a period of four months.

included within the government’s
team electoral promises, answers the
petition of several companies who
wished to install them last year.
Water attractions to have more fun onFuengirola’s beaches this summer
FuENGIRoLA Council has spent
almost €22,000 on two new
machines to clean the sand.
The councillor for Beaches, Ana
Mula, presented the machines, called
mini self-propelled beach cleaners,
which sift the sand.
As they are small, they can be used
in narrow or hard to access areas, such
as those around sunbeds or along the
wall separating the sand from the
seafront. They will get rid of refuse
such as stones and seaweed, as well as
rubbish left by humans, aerate the
sand and keep the area free of bacteria
and microbes.
They can be used by a single person
and smooth the sand as they go.
The machines, which have a two-
year guarantee, will be added to the
rest of the equipment used on the
beaches, although there are plans to
also buy larger machines this year, to
keep up the appearance of the local
shore which is Fuengirola’s main
attraction.

SoME 50 residents of Fuengirola have
taken their dogs to the Municipal Dog
Training School at the Guau Guau Dog
Park in the city.
The local councillor for Sport, Pedro
Cuevas, visited the park to promote the
training school, which was launched in
September and is run by Miguel Angel
Camacho.
He explained that it has been very
popular since the start, with an average of
nine people every month, and that those
who had attended were very happy with
the results.
Dogs are trained and educated in an
area which has fences, jumps, slalom,
tables and a ring on the obstacle course.
The aim is for them to learn how to
behave towards other dogs and people
and learn basic obedience.
They are also given a character test and
the owners are taught laws regarding
ownership, all so that the dogs can be
walked without incident.
Classes are from Monday to Friday
from 6pm to 7pm and from 7.30pm to
8.30pm, in small groups. To register, visit
the Sports Council at the Elola Sports
Complex. The price is €45 for people
registered on the padron and €60 for
