Crankshaft Design Radial Piston Motors
The main characteristics of this type of motor are high mechanical e ciency, especially at start-up, and high volumetric
e ciency. Interchangeable parts enable motors to be built that are tailored to the customer’s speci c needs. A number of
features distinguish SAI motors from other radial piston designs. The design of the radial motor with the crankshaft and
oscillating cylinders provides very high starting torque e ciencies as well as other advantages.
Swivelling Cylinder
The cylinder (1) remains aligned with the eccentric path of the crank (3), eliminating side loading between the cylinder
and the piston (2). The articulation of the cylinder-piston assembly is achieved with large diameter trunnions (4) which
ensure low speci c loads. Larger trunnions (12) increase their strength and sti! ness while reducing speci c loads. Larger
Trunnions also allow Hydraulic balancing(13), which reduces friction, wearing and heat generation. This enables operation
using higher pressures and speeds.
Double Piston Support Bearing
The pistons transmit their load to the shaft via a hydrostatic bearing (5) and a central roller bearing. The hydrostatic bearing
reduces metal to metal contact ensuring optimal lubrication and low friction. The roller bearing minimizes the friction
between the piston and the spherical piston support ring, reducing heat and wear while improving low speed operation
and starting torque. The mechanical e ciency of the SAI motor is typically higher than 90% at 400 bar (5800 psi).
Piston Retaining Rings
The piston retaining rings (7) ensure that the piston remains in contact with the shaft in all operating conditions. The
retaining force counteracts the separating force continuously, thus preventing lifting, tilting, or hammering of the piston
during cavitation. This also helps extend the life of the motor as well as reduce the noise generated. SAI motors are
extremely quiet. The noise level can be reduced further by using a back pressure of 5 - 10 bar (70 - 145 psi) on the motor.
Please note that pressure lines and motor support structures can propagate or even amplify the sound from the motor.
Rotary Axial Distributor
Optimal distribution is achieved with short ducts that have wide diameters in the rotary axial distributor (8). This reduces
the power loss when high " ow rates are present and achieves high volumetric e ciency. Precision machining and high
performance seals provide optimal functionality throughout the life of the motor as well as protecting against thermal
shock. The distributor housing (9) is interchangeable, providing a wide range of pressure ratings, port sizes, and " ow
control options. The motors are available, on request, with a special distributor which ensures silent working conditions. A
radial cylinder injection feed eliminates direct hydraulic axial loading of the motor casing. The large cylinder feed channels
(10) drastically reduce power loss due to drag. Stronger Castings (11) as well as internal reinforcement ribbing increase the
load capacity, as well as allow for higher internal pressures when compared to previous products.

Pressure Ratings, Back Pressure, and Case Pressure
The motors have listed their continuous and peak operating pressure. The continuous and average operating pressure
should be chosen as a function of the required bearing lifetime (see bearing lifetime graphs). The motors may work at peak
pressures not exceeding 1% per minute, no more than 10 times per hour.
SAI motors are capable of operating with high back pressures with high e ciency, e.g. for series circuit applications. The
allowable pressures vary as a function of piston diameter and other factors. If the motors are required for an application
with back pressure, contact the technical department for further details. Typical allowable back pressure values are:
Port A Port B
Continuous 3,000 psi 2,200 psi
Peak 5,000 psi 5,000 psi
The case pressure for all motors is independent of the return line pressure. Standard case pressure is 15 psi continuous, 75
psi peak. For higher pressures (up to 350 psi) please contact the SAI technical Department.
Torque
To obtain the theoretical output torque of a motor, multiply the speci! c torque (lb.ft/100 psi) given in the displacement tables by the pressure divided by 100 (psi/100). The graph below shows the output torque variation as the shaft rotates
though 360°. the output torque will vary slightly as the motor rotates, this is due to the cycling of the cylinders and it is part of normal operation.
Typical starting torque e ciencies are given in the performance graphs of the motors. The starting torque, however, also depends on the starting position of the shaft (see graph above). The motors are capable of operating at low speeds with a high degree of speed stability. The minimum stable speed depends on the displacement of the motor. In general, the motors remain sensitive to # ows of 6 in³/min + motor leakage rate. Best results are obtained with 75-150 psi back pressure and after the circuit has been completely purged of air by running it at 2/3 max speed for 5-10 mins. The output torque does not fall o& at very low speeds or at standstill.
Cavitation and Freewheeling
The design of the motors ensures that they are not damaged if subjected to cavitation, even for prolonged periods of time. The motors will rotate normally even with empty cylinders (i.e. no oil-air, or vacuum), which is useful for disconnecting the motor from the hydraulic circuit (see below). Transitions from normal motor operating mode to free wheeling and hydraulic braking mode can be carried out dynamically. The motors can be disconnected from the hydraulic circuit and be driven externally (freewheeling, free-fall, in case of breakdown, ect.) at speeds of up to the max. speeds given. For higher
Y
Z [ \ ] ^ _ ` a b c d e f b g FS Series Motors
speeds, please contact our technical department.
The diagram below shows four possible circuit con gurations for motor disconnection and/or for operation in free
wheeling.
A: It is possible for the motor to run with only partially lled cylinders, causing a signi cant increase in noise levels. This
type of circuit is to be avoided for high speed applications.
B: The motor runs with air in the cylinders. This type is ideal for high speed freewheeling applications.
C: The motor runs with inlet and outlet ports connected. This type of circuit is suitable for applications in which it is
necessary to control the speed of the motor. (e.g. with variable throttle).
D: The motors run with air in the cylinders subjected to negative pressure. The motors can operate in these conditions for
several hours without damage or being overheated and absorb very little torque.
Hydraulic Fluids
SAI recommends the use of high quality mineral-based hydraulic oil containing anti-wear, anti-foaming, anti-oxidation,
and extreme pressure additives. Ideal oil temperature is between +86°F to +122°F. Allowable oil temperatures are between
-68°F to +176°F. On request, motors can be supplied to operate with lower (to -104°F) or higher (to +248°F) temperatures.
Oil Viscosity should ideally range from 40 to 60 cSt, and 5 to 3000 cSt is allowable. The choice of oil should be made so that
the viscosity of the oil lies within the given range at its normal operating temperature.
Synthetic " uids (Phosphate Esters, Polyesters, ect) have similar properties to mineral oils and the same pressure, speed,
temperature, and viscosity ratings apply. These " uids may require seals made of a di# erent material, which are available
upon request. If water-based " uids (water-oil emulsions, water-glycol solutions, ect) are used, the following limits apply:
Max continuous pressure: 1,450 psi
Max speed reduction: 50%
Allowable Temperature +50°F to +140°F
The characteristics of vegetable oils vary widely and manufacturers recommendations should be followed. In general,
while lubricating qualities are similar to those of mineral oils, temperature limits may apply and the oil may need to be
changed frequently. The warranty on motors operating with " uids other than mineral oils for high pressure hydraulic
applications is only valid if the application is rst approved by SAI.
Drain line Position
The position of the drain line must be placed in such a way that there is always su$ cient oil in the casing for lubrication of
the shaft bearing. If the motor has to be installed with the shaft in a horizontal position, the drain line should be connected
to the uppermost drain line port. If the motor is installed with the shaft in a vertical position, the motor casing has to be en-
tirely lled with oil and the drain line has to be connected in such a way that no air can enter the motor. This is to prevent
the bearing on the motor boy from working without lubrication.

Start Up
Before connecting the pipes, make sure that they are clean and that there is no rust. Before the initial startup, ll the motor
and the gearbox with oil. In the shared oil versions, the motor has no shaft seal between the motor and gearbox, therefore
the unit can be lled either from the drain line in the motor cover or the one in the gearbox body. The products are tested
at the factory and do not require a testing period.
Filtration
SAI recommends using lters with a rating of 25 microns maximum. The preferred rating is 10 microns. SAI products have
good resistance to contaminated oil; however clean oil and an e! cient ltration system are important for the proper
functioning and reliability of all the components in the hydraulic system. The e! ciency of the ltering system is reduced
as the lter elements accumulate trapped particles, therefore the lters have to be regularly inspected and replaced. it
is recommended to pay close attention at the rst startup of the hydraulic system or in the event of replacement of any
component for damage or excessive usage. It is advisable to follow the lter manufacturer’s recommendations for its life
span and cleaning or substitution cycles.
Pipes and Connections
SAI recommends the use of high quality piping and connections for high pressure hydraulic applications. Please follow
manufacturer’s recommendations for pipe sizes. To reduce the e" ects for oil compressibility, use pipes with minimum
possible width and diameter and maximum rigidity, do not use pipes which are smaller than the port connections. To
reduce the e" ects of load loss avoid sharp corners, restrictions, and high # ow speed. The nominal diameter ND of a pipe
depends on the # ow (l/min) and average speed (m/s) . the formula to calculate the minimum recommended diameter,
considering a maximum speed of 6 m/s, is:

Where:
Q = flow
6 [m/s] = v (average speed)

Noise Levels
The motors operate at lowest noise levels with a back pressure of 75-150 psi, such as in closed circuits. Pressure lines and
motor support structures can be e cient noise propagators or ampli ers. Pressure lines should preferably be made up of straight rigid lengths, exible corners, rmly xed to rigid supports at irregular intervals away from sheet panelling. Motors must be rigidly xed to solid supports. The motors can be supplied with a special distributor that runs nearly silent in a wide operating range. They can also be supplied with a counterbalanced shaft tor educe vibrations at high speeds. Please contact the SAI technical department for further details.
Distributor Cover Orientation
SAI Motors can be provided with the distributor cover assembled with the distributor arrow pointing towards any one of the ve positions. To order, use assembly codes DM1, DM2, ... , DM5, etc. (DM1 = standard)
All SAI Motors are bidirectional. The direction of shaft rotation is determined by the direction of the oil ow. The standard motor con guration is set to have the input ow though port A which causes the shaft to move counterclockwise. If the input ow is though port B, the shaft will move clockwise. Please note if clockwise orientation is needed.
Direction of Shaft Rotation
All SAI motors are bidirectional. The direction of shaft rotation is determined by the direction of oil ow. Standard motors are supplied so that the ow entering in port A cause the shaft to rotate clockwise (as seen from the shaft side of the motor). Flow entering port causes the shaft to spin in the counter-clockwise direction. If rotation is desired in the opposite direction, the ow should be reversed. With the input on the B side and the output on the A side. SAI motors can also be supplied so that the shaft spins in the opposite direction (with input on the A side causing the shaft to spin counter-clockwise).
Bronze Components and Non-magnetic Motors
FS Series motors typically do not contain bronze components. However, when high speed distributors are used (including the standard D40 and D90 Distributors), or when a low speed distributor calls for a DBM wearplate, the motors do contain bronze components. If the hydraulic uid that is used is not compatible with bronze, select an optional low speed (LS) distributor (no bronze components) or contact our technical department. SAI can also provide motors with up to 70% non magnetic content.
