From Your Principal Seussical Junior™ is nearly here!
We are VERY excited about the wonderful performances that
we will be presenting to our school community next week.
Our 6 performances of Seussical Junior ™ are absolutely sold
out. This will be an amazing experience for all of our students
as well as our families. We have two casts and all of the
children in the school are participating in the performances.
The quality of the presentation should be outstanding as we
have some extremely talented performers in our school. We
do hope that you enjoy the show and celebrate our talents
with your family.
Family Evening Sessions— Booked for 3rd September.
”Where did we come from?” for families with R-4 students, and “What’s Happening to us?”
for families with Year 5 to 7 students—these sessions have been booked with Kidz Biz for
Wednesday, 3rd September. The cost will be $5.00 per family. This is advance notice and
more information will be provided later.
We certainly have a busy term ahead!
There are many exciting events planned this term, including: Seussical Junior™, Book Week:
“Connect to Reading” from August 18th, our Student-free day on 25th August, Family
evening on 3rd September, and our Open night on 9th September. We have the senior choir
performing in the Festival Theatre on September 16th. There will also be a fundraising
“Dance-athon” later in the term. So—there will be lots of fun and lots of learning gained
during Term 3 at Craigburn PS.
Congratulations!
A big congratulations to two of our
students: Ethan and Tahlia, who have
been selected to perform
as Assisting Artists in the
Craigburn Primary School is a learning community sustained by quality relationships
within a culture of respect, optimism and resilience. We are highly regarded for our
passion for learning and our focus on continual improvement.

Independent Review of
Governance in Schools
and Preschools
Have your say on how to strengthen
and support governance in schools
and preschools
Effective and inclusive local goverance
is an essential for any successful
school.
An Independent review is currently
being undertaken on the governance
arrangements in our public schools and
preschools and we are seeking your
input, as community members and as
parents.
Education is a shared experience and
there is considerable evidence that the
active engagement of parents and com-
munity members enhances the quality
of teaching and learning of children
and young people.
This is a great way to get involved in
how our school’s governance is shaped
for the future. To have your say, visit
www.saplan.org.au/yoursay/shaping-
our-schools-and-preschools.
Consultation closes 1 August 2014
Festival of Music held in the Festival Theatre. Ethan will be performing on his saxophone on
Saturday, 13th September, and Tahlia will be performing on the flute on the 14th
September. Well done! We are very proud of both of these students.
As well as these two amazing musicians we want to acknowledge the achievements of
Abigail who will be a compere at the Festival Theatre; Imogen and Amber who will be
performing in the Dance Troupe; Amber, Ivy, Lucy, Jenny and Jemma who will be in the
SAPPS Choir; and, Ethan and Tahlia who will also be in the orchestra. What a wonderful
opportunity these students have as performers and presenters in the Festival of Music! We
wish each and every one of them the very best success.

DECD Strategic Plan 2014 -2017
New plan to guide our schools
Helping young South Australians to achieve their best and to be healthy and safe are the
priorities of our department’s new strategic plan.
The Department for Education and Child Development’s Strategic Plan 2014-2017 outlines
how we will make our public education system even stronger over the next four years.
The plan identifies six priority areas that seek to improve learning achievement, health and
wellbeing, child safety, community engagement and timely access to services.
Our Chief Executive Tony Harrison says: “Our immediate priority is to lift the standard of
service provided within our organisation and to the community.
“We will strive for excellence, to earn trust, to build and strengthen relationships –
especially with children and young people, their parents, carers and the community.
“We will involve communities in decisions that affect them. Above all, we will listen,” Mr
Harrison says.
Our school looks forward to working with you as we bring this new plan to life.
For more information, visit www.decd.sa.gov.au/strategicplan.

Music Festival of Music
The Public Schools Music Festival starts on Tuesday, 9th September and finishes on Friday
19th September. Over the 12 concerts we have students who have successfully auditioned
and are involved in many different roles: as Assisting Artists, Orchestra members,
Performance Troupe, Compere and Soloists.
Also, thirty-four members of our Senior Choir will sing on Tuesday 16th September at
7.30pm as part of a massed choir of approximately 400 students. Craigburn is in the front
row. If you would like to purchase tickets for this show please contact Vivienne Menere in
the front office before August 8th. Tickets are $30 through the school’s preferential booking
process and after this date it is $32 through Bass.
Parents of students in the choir have already received ticketing information.

Craigburn Café Welcome Back everyone! We hope you all had an enjoyable 2 week break even though it
was freezing!
As we are now deep into winter, we have decided to offer Crunchy Hash Browns and Potato
Gems at recess time. All you need to do is write your name, class number and order on an
envelope , pop it into classroom lunch order box and your delicious warm treat will be
available for you to pick up at recess time. Easy! PLEASE NOTE ONLY AVAILABLE MONDAY
TO THURSDAY.
Hash brown still 60c
Potato Gems Minimum 5 per bag 50c
Also, Hot Chocolate with a lunch order is only $1.00 or $1.50 without lunch order
BUT MUST BE PRE-ORDERED.
Please note Spaghetti Bolognese has been deleted from the menu.
The canteen will be opened 6pm -8.30pm for the evening productions of Seussical The
Musical. We will be serving tea, coffee, hot chocolate, cakes and snacks.
Please support the canteen on these nights as they are classed as one of our ‘Special Days’
and the Pedal Prix Team will also be fundraising.
Just a reminder if your child is having a lunch order, please remind them to put it in the
classroom lunch box in the morning. We have noticed a number of children forgetting their
orders until 12.30pm, therefore they can’t get what they want! Due to the time factor they
will be offered a vegemite sandwich or noodles. It causes additional work for us and often
an upset child. Your support in this matter is greatly appreciated.
Thankyou and keep warm!

children to be very friendly as well as showing qualities of persistence and resilience in their
learning and developing of cycling skills.
Thank you to all the parents who brought their children’s bike to school for each lesson, we
understand it may have been a bit awkward, but we really appreciate your effort which
allowed all children to be involved in the riding.
Across the 4 classes (Rec-3/4) 79 children got off training wheels with 97% of the cohort
being able to ride independently with many of the children showing qualities of persistence
and determination; all the children involved learned new riding skills, one handed riding,
braking skills and awareness of riding on paths as well as safety knowledge.
Safety Tip: Ensure that shoelaces are tucked away so they can’t get tangles in the chain,
pedal or crank.

School Sport Boys SAPSASA Netball
On 25th July the Craigburn Boys Netball Team played Moana in the second round of the
SAPSASA Knockout Netball. The boys were leading for the whole match scoring 21 goals.
Moana put up a good fight but Craigburn came out on top with the final score being 21-10.
Thank you to all parents who came out to support the game and a special thanks to Lisa for
coaching us. We are looking forward to our next game in Week 4.
SAPSASA Netball Boys
SAPSASA Table Tennis
On Sunday 27th July two Year 7 boys, Fletcher and James, entered the Woodville table
tennis SAPSASA competition. They played seven games, including one against each other.
Each set was best of three but once the player had won two in a row, they were declared
the winner. James and Fletcher were the only two from Craigburn Primary and did
extremely well to land a second place, James taking out that honour. His final game was

against a young man from Gilles Street Primary School which he lost but fought well with a
score of 11-6 followed by 11-7 in the second set.
A big thanks to Karen Pettman for organising this event and to Lisa Lewis for taking the two
boys down to Woodville.
Well done boys.

Craigburn Crewsers
Race 3
On Sunday July 27th the Craigburn Crew-sers ventured to Victoria Park for Race 3 of the
HPV Super Series. With a large team of riders (42 students) and participation at an all time
high we were confident of a top 10 finish for bike 116. Bike 116 is made up of Year 7 boys
and is brand new this year while bike 151 is our all girls team, which won their category at
the Loxton race and was 2nd in Race 2. Bike 169 was ridden by mostly Year 6s in their first
year of Pedal Prix, with a few Year 7s helping them out. This was the second time ever
Craigburn had 3 teams in a race.
The race was extremely tight and exciting, while 169 maintained a position in the front half
of the field, bikes 116 and 151 were in a battle for a top 5 spot in their category. After 6
hours of hard riding we had finished 8th, 21st and 41st in the Primary school category out of
68 entries. The All Girls team finished as the 4th placed all girls team. The boys in bike 116
rode the 3rd fastest lap in the primary schools category, something to aim for next time!
Thanks to the parents who helped with setting up and packing away our pit area and
especially those who helped out as a Marshall, an important official part of the race. Thanks
also to Matt and James G who helped out with scrutineering on the Saturday.
Thanks go to all of our sponsors who have helped us with the purchase of our new bike.
These include Digital Audio Visual Installations, Hub Pizza Bar and Café, Liftserve, Bettio
Constructions and Renee’s Nails.
The teamwork displayed by the Craigburn students was exceptional as they worked
together to achieve a common goal.
Go Crew-sers!
