Baseball

8/9 Knockout Baseball Congratulations to the following boys that participated in the Secondary Schools Knockout Baseball competition this year: Darcy Gluyas, Peter Paech, Adam Wurfel, Jonas Garcia, Henry McAuliffe, Cooper Giles, Matthew Laverty, Will McAuliffe, Lewis Rayson, Jack Ramage, Ned Parr and Cooper Beeken. The team ended up third overall with games against St Michael’s and Seaton. These games were played in great spirit with some impressive batting on display. The players took on a variety of leadership roles both on the field and in a first base coaching role. Thanks also to Mike Garcia for assisting with the coaching of the team. Natasha Williams 8/9 Baseball Coach

Cricket

SHC claims 4th SAPSASA Knockout Cricket title Wednesday 29 November, 2017 marked Sacred Heart’s fourth consecutive 6/7 SAPSASA Knockout Cricket title! Captained by Will Patton, this year’s team has been impressive, convincingly winning all matches. However, Wednesday’s final was an incredibly tight and well-fought match between Hearts and a quality St Augustine’s College. Batting first, openers, Will Patton (22) and Chester Forster (30*) got Sacred Heart off to a flyer. However, St Augustine’s managed to keep their bowling and fielding tight, restricting us to 8/84 off of our allocated 25 overs. St Augustine had one batsman retire with a quick-fire 30*, making it hard for us, with their boys on top early in the innings. However, through spin-twins Sam King and Shane Raphael, the boys pulled it back for a tight victory. St Augustine finished with 7/68 off of their allotment. It was another deserved and cracking win from the boys, who deserve full credit for a great knockout campaign. Well done, boys! Tom Simpson, Stephanie Vidoni and Sam Rossi 6/7 Cricket Coaches

Touch Football

SACPSSA Touch Carnival Earlier this term, the Year 6/7 Touch Football players attended a carnival at the city touch fields. They had the opportunity to play a range of games against other schools from around Adelaide. The boys who participated did so with a great enthusiasm and displayed the skills that they have been developing throughout the season. They were commended for their attitude toward the game and the way they conducted themselves - no matter whether they won, lost or drew. Also attending were a number of Year 8 and 9 boys who volunteered their time to umpire on the day. Some of these young men give up their time to come out regularly after school to help coach and umpire the 6/7 players and their presence on the day was a great example to the younger players, who we hope will be encouraged to continue in this capacity once they are no longer participating in 6/7 Touch Football. Sharyn Davis Touch Football Coach

Volleyball

Knockout Volleyball success On 18 October, ten very talented Year 9 boys attended the first round of the Knockout Volleyball competition. The boys played against Immanuel, Adelaide High and Concordia for the opportunity to progress through to the next round. Captained by Darcy Gluyas, the boys worked tirelessly all day. Oliver Martin, Darcy and Brandon Howard combined brilliantly at the net and with amazing teamwork, were very effective in blocking the opposition and creating excellent game play. Adelaide High took the boys by surprise and the first set was a wake up game for the boys. In the second set they were much more competitive and with some consistent serving from Mathew Higgins and Elijah Laube, the boys were right back in the competition. The second game was against Concordia and the boys were narrowly defeated by 2 points. Jonas Garcia and Hamish Dunkin worked tirelessly in the front court to ensure we had as many opportunities to win points as we could. Our final opponent in the round was Immanuel, who train all year. We were narrowly defeated, which considering the boys had only trained as a team for two lunch times, was an excellent effort. Braydon McPherson served well and consistently kept the ball in play. Cooper Beecken set well and proved very effective as a back court player combining with Will De Ritter to win many points between them. The boys met Concordia again in the final play off and successfully defeated them with some brilliant teamwork and net play. Brandon Howard was the player of the tournament proving to be an outstanding front court player. Thanks to Emily Anderson for refereeing for us all day. Well done boys! Kerin Tinnion Volleyball

Basketball - Girls

Girls’ Term 4 Basketball Report This term we entered an Open A girls team in the SACSSGSA Basketball competition played at Cabra College on Saturday mornings. Made up predominately of Year 10 students, it was a great opportunity for the girls to bond and develop as a team in preparation for next year’s more vigorous competition and Marist Carnival selections. In Term 4 there are no finals, however Sacred Heart were undefeated, finishing the season on top of the premiership table. We welcomed a new coach to Sacred Heart College, Sarah Turnbull. Sarah comes from Sturt Sabres Basketball Club and has provided great coaching and positive feedback for the girls this term. The team responded well to Sarah and we look forward to continuing working with her in the future. Trials for Girls Basketball will begin early next year in preparation for the Open A Grade and Marist Carnival Team. All players wishing to participate in Basketball next year are asked to attend these trials. Please nominate your interest on the CEA nomination form and keep an eye out for meeting times. Michelle Crocker Girls’ Basketball and Netball Coordinator

Cricket

First XI Cricket The First XI Cricket team have started off the season well, recording 8 victories from 12 matches played so far. One of these victories was against the SHOC Cricket Club in the Br Jordan Redden Cup match, played on the Main Oval on 21 November, 2017. SHOCS batted first and set the First XI the difficult task of chasing down 147 in the 20 overs allocated. Thanks to an outstanding 92 runs off 57 balls by opening batsman Gavin Regan, the First XI managed to chase down the total with 1 ball to spare. Pictured above is Br Jordan, surrounded by players from both teams after the match. We were thrilled that Br Jordan was able to be in attendance and it is a privilege to be able to play a match for a trophy named in his honour.

45th Annual Marist Cricket Carnival We wish our First XI Cricketers well as they prepare to head off to Traralgon in Victoria for the 45th Annual Marist Cricket Carnival. The team will depart on 5 December, 2017 and will come up against seven other Marist Schools from around the Country. The First XI have started off the season well, recording 8 victories from 12 matches played so far. Go Hearts! First XI Messenger Bowl T20 Competition On Friday 3 November, 2017, Sacred Heart played Scotch College in the First XI Messenger Bowl T20 Competition. The SHC First XI team was made up of brothers, Zac McCabe (Year 9) and Samuel McCabe (Year 11), as well as Henry McCabe (Year 10), the cousin of Sam and Zac (pictured). This is the first time that the three lads have played First XI Cricket together and the first time that we have had three family members represent SHC in the same First XI team for a very long time. All three lads were influential in getting SHC home against Scotch by 50 runs with the final score being SHC 7/130 def Scotch 10/80. Well done to the team for a great win! Mountain Biking

SHC represents in Mountain Bike Challenge

On Thursday 26 October, Year 11 students, Thomas Strudwick and Bennett Wythe competed in the Individual and Teams Mountain Bike Challenge held at the Craigburn Farm Trails. The event saw tremendous competition amongst the cyclists over a course that challenged all levels in both individual and team races. It was great to see Sacred Heart College represented for the first time at this event. The boys thoroughly enjoyed themselves and were ecstatic to have the opportunity to represent Sacred Heart College in their chosen sport. “... we had an awesome day out riding and were lucky enough to win the team race. I came second and Bennett third in the individual race! Thanks heaps for helping us out with entering and getting it all sorted…”, Thomas said. In the individual competition, Thomas placed second in the Under 19 competition with Bennett 0.5 seconds behind him in third place. In the team event the two boys were able to combine forces to take out a thrilling win to defeat Mercedes College and Urrbrae Agricultural High School. Congratulations Bennett and Tom! 2017 Hearts Sportspersons of the Year Awards

Hearts Sportspersons of the Year The Hearts Sportspersons of the Year Award is presented to a student or students whose contribution to the Schools co-curricular program, in context of wider state/national representation, is said to be the most meritorious of the year level. The award winner is presented with a certificate and trophy (keeper for winner, while a perpetual trophy is engraved with winner’s name) by the Principal or nominee.

Patrick Goodwin – 2017 Hearts Sportsman of the Year Award Patrick has been a member of the Sacred Heart College Triathlon Team, Cross Country Team, and Track and Field Team since his commencement at the College. He puts his hand up to represent the College at any opportunity he gets, and his achievements whilst representing Sacred Heart are outstanding. Patrick achieves quietly, but today we acknowledge publicly the extent of his commitment to sport at SHC and his success. This year at the Co-Ed Track and Field Championship, he won the 800m and 1500m, achieving a Standard of Excellence in both races. A Standard of Excellence is a result that is in the top 5% of competitors in South Australia. At the Achilles Cup Track and Field event in September Patrick convincingly won the 1500m.

At the School Triathlon Championships at West Lakes this year, Patrick was the winner of the Individual Senior Boys Triathlon event, completing the swim, ride and run. Hours later, he backed up this performance in the Team Triathlon Senior Boys event where he joined forces with Lachlan Merchant (swimmer) and Fletcher Symonds (Cyclist) to complete the final leg of the race, a 4 km run. The team won this event for the second year in a row. As a result of his success on this day, Patrick was selected in the School State Triathlon Team. Outside of SHC, Patrick holds the title of 2017 State Champion in the following events:

• 1500m Athletics SA State Champion • 5000m Athletics SA Road State Champion • 6000m Athletics SA Long Course Cross Country Champion • 1500m LASA State Champion • 800m LASA State Champion • 2000m LASA Cross Country State Champion • SA All Schools Triathlon Champion • Triathlon SA Sprint Distance State Champion • All Schools Triathlon Teams State Champion • All Schools Cycling Time Trial State Champion.

Patrick also came first in the Triathlon SA Junior State Series and most recently won the City-Bay 6km race in a time of 19 min 36 sec. He was the only athlete to run in under 20 minutes. Patrick has been committed to representing the College in his athletic pursuits whilst also achieving highly at a club and state level. It is for this reason that we were very pleased to announce the Hearts Sportsman of the Year as Patrick Goodwin. Congratulations Patrick and all the very best for what your bright future holds!
