I saw them form a new hospitality group to make newcomers welcome and they had fun doing it. I feel we need to firm up our fellowship by showing up for coffee hour, mingle, have a good me, and get to know each other. In addion to our Sunday services, we have two upcoming social funcons. On Saturday, Feb- ruary 10, at 11:30 the ladies are having another brunch and just a few days later on Tuesday, February 13, we will gather for our pancake supper. Feel free to bring a friend, or just come and enjoy one another. It was announced at the annual meeng that we are talking to Mother Liz Gomes to be a permanent priest unl we can call our part-me rector. I will be talking with her Sunday to get this moving forward. While arranging our meeng, I learned from her that she has years of experience in congregaonal development and is willing to work with Saint Andrew's to increase its membership. I'm sure her help will be most welcome and I am excited for us that we have her not only for a priest but to help us increase our membership. I know we will connue to work together, and with God's help and our prayers, St. Andrew's will connue to be the caring church it has always been. God bless you, Carol Daney

Pledged Income vs. Budget January—December, 2017

Pledged Income Received : $82,361.33 Pledged Income Budgeted : $105,928.00

Difference: -$23,566.67

I ask your prayers as I begin my term as Senior Warden. I feel this is what God wants me to do and I realize

that I can't do a good job without your help. It is good to know I have your support. I bring with me over 40 years

of administrative skills as I have managed a law firm as well as the small office building in which it is housed. I am

thankful for our capable and energetic Vestry I will have surrounding me including Jenniffer Dorsett as Junior War-

den; Lory Mills as Scretary; Gary Oehmke; Steve Clark; Tonya Devena; and our walk-on Martha Brohammer.

After the annual meeting the vestry went right to work with the top priority being the budget. As of that

time we had a total pledge base of $71,260. Using the miscellaneous monies received in 2017 as a guideline, we

have a total projected income of $96,699. Expenses for 2017 were $94,625 so I feel our bills for 2018 can be met,

however, we have little in the budget to fund a future part-time priest. A plan is being put together to help chop

down this shortfall.

I have seen how St. Andrew's comes together when there is a need. I have seen how we come together in

celebration, a particular favorite of mine is St. Andrew's Day. I can tell we care about each other. I watched a doz-

en ladies at a recent brunch come up with ideas on how we can make St. Andrew's better and a great place to

worship. I saw them form a new hospitality group to make newcomers welcome and they had fun doing it.

I feel we need to firm up our fellowship by showing up for coffee hour, mingle, have a good time, and get

to know each other. In addition to our Sunday services, we have two upcoming social functions. On Saturday, Feb-

ruary 10, at 11:30 the ladies are having another brunch and just a few days later on Tuesday, February 13, we will

gather for our pancake supper. Feel free to bring a friend, or just come and enjoy one another.

It was announced at the annual meeting that we are talking to Mother Liz Gomes to be a permanent priest

until we can call our part-time rector. I will be talking with her Sunday to get this moving forward. While arranging

our meeting, I learned from her that she has years of experience in congregational development and is willing to

work with Saint Andrew's to increase its membership. I'm sure her help will be most welcome and I am excited for

us that we have her not only for a priest but to help us increase our membership.

I know we will continue to work together, and with God's help and our prayers, St. Andrew's will continue

to be the caring church it has always been.

God bless you,

Carol Daney

Appreciation Sunday, January 28th

Appreciation Sunday was a day to thank our outgoing Senior Warden Don

Morrow, outgoing Vestry members Margaret Kinkead and Selina Touhey. Our

Treasurer Debbie Oehmke, our Bookkeeper Maureen Sparks, and our Parish

Administrator Jenniffer Dorsett. This past year with-

out a priest would not have gone as smoothly with-

out all of their help in addition to countless parish-

ioners. We also had the rare occurrence of 6 former

Senior Wardens in one place.

Season of Lent

Shrove Tuesday Pancake Feed, February 13, 5:00-7:00pm, Guild Hall Shrove

Tuesday is the day immediately before Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent,

named for the “shriving,” or confessions and absolutions, performed traditionally

that day. Also known as Mardi Gras, or “Fat Tuesday,” for those who prepare for

Lent by making sure they have sins of which to repent. Traditionally pancakes were eaten, because

eggs and fat, forbidden during a Lenten fast were used.

Ash Wednesday Service, February 14, 7:00pm. The first of the forty days of

Lent, named for the custom of placing blessed ashes on the foreheads of wor-

shipers at Ash Wednesday services. The ashes are a sign of penitence and a remind-

er of mortality, and may be imposed with the sign of the cross. The ashes are made

from palm leaves left over from the preceding Palm Sunday celebration.

Taizé Services Sundays in the Guild Hall 5:00pm during Lent. Taizé worship

is an ecumenical, peaceful way to pray, using (easy to learn) musical chants, si-

lent meditation, and scripture readings... a meditative, common prayer. The ser-

vice offers a wonderful opportunity to be silent and center on the Lord. It lasts

no longer than 30 minutes.

Lenten Book Study Sundays in the Guild Hall 5:30pm during Lent. Don Morrow will be leading a discussion on the book ‘Jesus Was An Episcopalian (And You Can Be One Too!)’ by Chris Yaw. Please let the church office know if you need a book.

From Ashes to Easter

ASH WEDNESDAY TO EASTER SUNDAY LENT Bags

Donate a little during lent! Together we can help a lot!

Lent is the forty day season of the Church Calendar based upon Jesus’ forty

days of fasting in the desert. It is a time of reflection and remembrance in which we acknowledge

our own need for mercy and the desperate needs for food, security and love in the world around

us. Traditionally, the season of Lent has been a time of giving to those in need as we acknowledge

our own need. Please join the Outreach Committee in taking a Lent bag beginning February 11th

and placing a food item in each day. Then bring back the bag on Palm Sunday and the contents will

be given to the Derby Food Bank.

Gracious and loving God, thank

Christ

What is distinctive about Christian ethics of compassion is the person of Jesus Christ. We understand our love and compassion for others to have its source in the person of Christ himself—Jesus present and active within us. We embody or incarnate love, which has its source in Christ.

-Br. Mark Brown Society of Saint John the Evangelist
