First of all, let me take this opportunity to sincerely thank all our class parents for your continued support

this term. Let us continue to cooperate and support our children as we wind down the year.

Below are some thoughts by the children about our CELEBRATIONS theme.

What word comes to mind when you hear the word CELEBRATIONS? These are some of the words the

children submitted:

CELEBRATIONS

They also described why people celebrate some special occasions ……

Bati – Many Christians around the world celebrate Christmas to remember the birth of JESUS. This event is celebrated on the 25th of December every year. Adrian – People celebrate the OLYMPICS to find the best of the best in different sports. The Olympics happen every four years. Brazil will host the Olympics in 2016. Gabriella – Many schools hold sports carnivals to identify talented and skilful young people in different sports. Our school held its sports carnival in term 2 this year. Lionel – Many people also hold birthdays to celebrate with someone who turns another year older. Birthday celebrations happen every day of the year throughout the world. Wesley – Many Christians also celebrate Easter to remember the death and resurrection of JESUS. It is celebrated at the end of March or beginning of April every year. Alicia – Cultural Shows are held in many parts of the world by different groups of people to maintain, promote and showcase their cultural beliefs, customs and traditions. We celebrated our cultural day in September this year.

Dear Parents and Guardians Welcome to the 2nd Edition of the Grade 4/5 News Page. So far the students have worked hard and there is evidence of progress in various aspects of their learning. I would like to take this time to thank you particularly the parents, guardians and sponsors for your tireless support throughout the year. It’s been a great year and hope to work with you again in years to come.

Learning Flash Back. Reading

This term we have been practising the comprehension strategy of Synthesising, Retelling and revisiting Inferring. Synthesising in simplest term is changing your thinking after

you read something new. For example, first I used to think ‘spiders are poisonous and not edible’ but after reading a text that people in Cambodia eat fried spiders and sell them in restaurants, my thinking changed to ‘some spiders are good to eat’. Retelling is a comprehension strategy that

allows students to process important story elements. It helps familiarize students with sequencing story events and identifying important story components. Inferring is a strategy that allows a reader to combine back-ground knowledge with evidence from the text and predict what is happening at the moment.

Writing

In writing we have been learning how to write Information Writing and Recount Writing.

Maths

In Maths, based on our class needs, we have been prac-tising Multiplication Strategies and working on Division. We also practiced reading Coordinates on maps, reading

graphs and fractions.

Theme

This term’s Themes of study are “Forces” and “Celebrations.” We have been answering the big questions,

What is Force? And Why do people celebrate?

I enjoy doing writing this term. In all writing we start by doing boxing, then draft and finally the report or the final write up. This makes writ-ing easier.

Students’ Section

In our Celebration Theme, we made Christmas Wreath using clothes hanger, old newspaper, crepe papers and Christmas decorations. We will be selling them at the Craft Market in week 10.

I like Maths best. I like doing multiplying by 10 and measurement. In Language I like add-ing connections when doing story writing.

This week was fun when we wrote our recount of a celebration. I wrote about my baby sister’s birthday party. The good thing is you have to box up the structure, write your draft and then your final writing. And that’s what makes writ-ing easy.

Mr Anthony Pare Class Teacher

In reading I love Retelling. In Retelling, you must think of what happened in the beginning, middle and the ending.

In theme study we learnt about Forces. Forces can be grouped into two different categories; Contact force, eg: friction and Non Contact force, eg: gravity.

This term we have been learning how to pick the main points out of text and then learning how to summarise. The poetry that we read was interesting and we have written all sorts of poems, Haikus, Shape poems, rhyming poems. It is interesting , I like writing poems.

The maths last week was so much fun, we learnt how to create our own budget and how to set it out using a spreadsheet program. We are now learning how to create graphs on spreadsheet. It’s fun.

I wrote a story. I hope you enjoy reading it.

Title: There lived three baby tree frogs and a mummy and a daddy. They were happy. One night there was a huge bush fire. The mother and the father grabbed all three baby tree frogs and jumped from tree to tree. A tree kangaroo helped them. They reached safety and then suddenly the tree kangaroo turned and ate all of the tree frogs!

Grade 5/6 News continue…

We are making wind chimes this term and we will be cooking too, trying out different Afri-can recipes.

MATHEMATICS

In our maths we have been learning about deci-mals and different ways of measuring so far this term. To help with our calculations we made decimal number sliders. They worked, it was fun too. We showed everyone in the class assembly too

We are all learning how to stand and speak confi-dently and clearly. Some of us had ten out of ten in our assessment for speaking clearly. Find out who in the three way conference!!!

DESIGN TECHNOLOGY

In our Art we are investigating the style of ‘Futurism. We are also looking at African art, the pat-terns and amazing colours and comparing to some famous PNG artist’s art styles. These are some of our paintings.
