The day had finally come for the year 12 cohort to depart on our highly anticipated trip to Tinaroo Dam for our 2016 senior school camp. On Wednesday the 10th of February, we all gathered in our school hall accompanied by our oversized bags and our teachers who were looking forward to their 72 hour supervision. We were all split into groups and headed to our buses for the journey up the range. Upon arrival we were greeted by the friendly staff at the Tinaroo Active Recreation Centre who directed us to the rooms. After lunch, and the organisation of the groups, we were off to our first activity, which for group 4 was the stand-up paddle boarding. After a quick lesson we were paddling out on open water and enjoying
the serenity of the lake, that’s if we could keep our balance! Through the entirety of the camp we participated in many activities which not only included stand up paddle boarding but kayaking, high ropes, the catapult challenge, the disco and the trivia night. Behind the fun and games, this camp was designed to not only give us a three day holiday with no homework, but to build us as a team, spark new friendship or just build on the ones that already existed. It was designed to inspire team work and achievement that will carry on for the rest of our senior year and our future endeavours. So we would like to thank our teachers, who volunteered their time for our benefit, and our Head of Senior School Mr Williams, for making this event possible.

Senior Induction Ceremony – Friday
19th February 2016
The Senior Induction is indeed a very
significant day in our school calendar. It is
a time when senior students are
acknowledged as true role models and senior leaders of our
school and when our duly elected school leaders are
introduced to the school community. The formality of the
ceremony begins with leaders and our senior students
accepting their 2016 badges, which publicly declare students’ allegiance to our school values of
respect, quality, safety and honesty. This process empowers our students to make a commitment to
themselves, their school and their community, and provides a way forward for our senior students to
focus on the following obligations.
As the 2016 senior leaders of Gordonvale State High, we pledge to uphold our school values of
Respect, Quality, Honesty and Safety by honouring the responsibilities and expectations of being a
school leader. We promise to commit ourselves to being excellent role models in order to ensure the
good image of our school. We will persevere and work together for the betterment of the school and
our local community.
The Senior Induction Ceremony is also an opportunity to
recognise those students who have been elected to specific
leadership roles:
School captains: Hayley and Sean
School vice captains: Alyssa and Jake
School sport captains: Jake and Khail
School social captains: Jessica and Zakeira
Year 10 and 11 leaders were also acknowledged as
follows:
Year 11 –Charlee Rose and Isaiah
Year 10 – Kyla and Jacob
The House Captain badges for 2016 were presented to:
Barramundi – Chantelle and Mitchell
Sea Eagles – Mikasa and Jayden
Taipans – Sheradyn and Josh
Crocodiles – Courtney and Ryan
These leaders have been elected through due process to lead our student body into a very successful year.
On behalf of our year 12 seniors, our school leaders passed on thanks to families, friends and teachers who have contributed to their growth and development.
Congratulations to all elected leaders and senior students of 2016.

Leaving School Grounds I am very concerned about students who arrive to school each morning, and then before first lesson, depart the school grounds with friends for MacDonald’s or the town centre. Once students arrive at school, they must stay at school, unless authorisation has been given by the school on parent/carer notice to leave the school grounds. Students then must sign out through the office. Students arriving on school buses must immediately enter the school grounds. There will be consequences for students who choose not to follow school rules. Forbidden items at school: For legal and/or safety reasons the following items are banned from the school:
• Soft drinks and high energy drinks (the school is permitted one RED DAY each term which generally corresponds with a sports
carnival day)
• Aerosol deodorant sprays
• White-out (liquid form)
• Steel rulers
• Tobacco, cigarettes and associated smoking implements such as lighters, matches, filters
• Alcohol
• All drugs including implements used in drug taking
• R-rated materials (print and electronic )
Students who choose to bring forbidden items into the school will have the item/s confiscated. Parents/Carers will be notified. The Queensland Police Service may also be contacted for any illegal item brought into the school or found in a student’s possession. Students may face detention, suspension or exclusion as per the GSHS Responsible Behaviour Plan for Students

What a fantastic start to 2016. We welcome Japanese teacher, Kevin Boorman who brings a plethora of skills to the school in both

a qualified Dance teacher her skills extend well beyond the English classroom. Janelle Ghidella has also joined us, changing roles from
the behaviour management (buddy room) co-ordinator to English/ SOSE teacher. I look forward to updating you on the many and

Valentine’s Day
Cupid’s bow found its way to Gordonvale State High School last week, weaving its magic across the whole school. Our Valentine’s Day Social Committee put together a wonderful afternoon of rose deliveries with over 700 roses bought by secret, and not so secret, admirers the week before. Stu-dents and staff blushed their way through the afternoon as dozens were delivered to classrooms and staffrooms on Monday the 15th of February, extending the Valentine’s Day feeling from the weekend. The rose deliveries are always a friendly and colourful way to start our school year. Well done to the Social Captains, Jessica and Zakeira, and their committee for a great afternoon.
CQ University’s Outreach Officer Laura Rowley recently visited Gordonvale State High School to deliver CQ University’s School Outreach Program to students in Years 7 to 9, with SUMMIT students in Years 7 and 8 being the first to participate in the Program. The Year 7 students focused on self-assessment as the typical first step in career devel-opment. Students engaged in fun, interactive activities to explore their dreams, strengths, values and the importance of resilience. The Year 8 students focused on the second stage of career development: occupation awareness. Students investigated ca-reers relating to their personality type, where to find career information, before explor-ing different occupations and goal-setting and decision-making. The CQ University School Outreach Program targets school students in Years 6 to 12 to raise student aspirations towards higher education and to help build student awareness and capacity to navigate post-school education pathways. CQ University's Widening Participation Program Coordinator, Melinda Mann-Yasso said CQ University is committed to school engagement. “We believe that universities have an important role in supporting schools to create learning opportunities that assist students to make informed decisions about their education and their futures beyond Year 12. Our school programs aim to equip students to make decisions about their futures and have access to information about university regardless of their backgrounds.” The CQ University Outreach Programs will continue to be delivered to all Years 7-9 students throughout 2016 on Friday afternoons during Learning for Life lessons.

Chinese JCU Course
On the 1st day we started at nine o’clock and it was pretty relaxing, because everybody was getting used to the class and everyone in it.
The 2nd day was no different to the first with everyone getting used to the environment. On the 3rd day, however, we got straight into
the Chinese lesson and started to revise the pinyin characters and learnt how to play Chinese chess with characters. Throughout the 4th
day we learned Tai-Chi, a martial art, we also made delicious won-ton… although I did fall sick later in the afternoon. Even later in the
day our teacher pulled out some of his Chinese games that took some extreme skill and brain power. The final day of this awesome ex-
perience we had photos taken and had a big lunch. While eating we watched “Chinese School”. We had another photo but with all the
language classes put into one massive group. It was an amazing experience, wish I could do it again but maybe with more Gordonvale
students.

GSHS P&C News
The Annual General Meeting of The Gordonvale State High School P&C Association is to be held on Monday 21st March 2016 at 6pm in the Resource Centre at the school. With the current committee’s children already graduating from high school, we are in need
of some fresh faces with new ideas. To encourage parents and carers to attend, and maybe adopt a vacant executive position, we thought that we might explain what the positions entail (with the help of information obtained from the P and C Qld website). A new committee has
flexibility in when, where and how the meetings are conducted (as long as in accordance with the current constitution). Time commitment is up to you! We currently do a limited amount of fundraising as our tuckshop and uniform shop provide our income which goes back to the
students in many different ways. We realise that parents and carers are increasingly busy, however many hands make light work. You do not need to hold a position however, coming along to the monthly meetings heightens your awareness of the daily goings on in our school and
gives you a say.
What is a P&C Association? A Parents and Citizens’ Association (P&C) is a group of community minded people, parents and citizens, who take on a more formal role to assist the school in providing:
feedback on school policies and activities
additional resources to be used to enhance student learning
parents with opportunities to be involved in their child’s education.
Our P&C runs the tuckshop and employs the tuckshop employees and a casual book keeper.
Role of the P&C Association The principal is the site manager and the Minister’s representative. The P&C Association should work with the principal and the school community in a productive partnership to achieve the best possible outcomes for students of the institution. It is
not the role of the P&C Association to participate in the daily running of the school. This is the role of the principal. The principal’s supervisor is the DETE Assistant Regional Director.
The principal will ask the P&C Association to endorse various documents during the course of the year. President The Constitution provides that the president:
shall hold office in an honorary capacity
shall preside at every meeting of the Association in which she/he is present
as chairperson, shall have a deliberate vote and a casting vote
CANNOT hold the office of treasurer
will be a signatory on P&C accounts.
Vice-President The vice-president should:
consider this position as the president’s understudy
provide support and assistance to the president
become familiar with P&C operations, rules and meeting procedures.
The role of the vice-president is to provide essential support for the president and possibly other members of the team, i.e. assisting the sec-
retary or the treasurer in some of their tasks. The vice-president will chair those meetings from which the President is absent and carry out any duties that have been delegated by the president. The vice president can also act as chair for any subcommittees established by the Asso-
ciation.
Secretary: The secretary should:
maintain attendance records and a register of members including life members
assist the president in preparing an agenda for each meeting
collate agenda papers for each meeting (including subcommittee reports)
prepare and present minutes of P&C and officers’ meetings at each general meeting
record and deal with correspondence in/out as directed by the P&C
generally organise, record and maintain information pertaining to the activities of the P&C
maintain custody of P&C Association documents on the school site where possible.
Treasurer: For more information, see the Support Guide for P&Cs and the Accounting Manual for P&C Associations. The treasurer has the
overall responsibility for the financial management of the P&C, including all subcommittee accounts. Treasurers must:
comply with the Accounting Manual for P&C Associations
prepare an annual budget for the P&C
supply a financial statement at each meeting
make all cheque books, deposit books and receipt books together with books of account, available to the auditor
prepare annual statements, which must be audited and a copy forwarded to the DETE Regional Office.
It is the treasurer’s responsibility to keep accurate accounts of receipts and expenditure. All executive officers have a responsibility in this area.
The Gordonvale State High School P&C Association employs a casual book keeper who maintains the financial accounts for our committee. It is the Treasurer’s job to oversee and have overall responsibility for the general day to day running of the finances, however having the book keeper on staff decreases the time commitment. A current knowledge of general finance procedures and a keen eye are all that is required for this position.
For more information see: http://www.pandcsqld.com.au/documents/2013/11/quick-guide-for-pc-executive-officers.pdf
We are hoping to see some new faces at our AGM; the current committee will be available for handovers, mentoring and to answer any ques-
tions you might have. If you are interested in adopting a position on the 2016 P&C Association or have any questions please contact us at [email protected]

Year 7 Camp at Quinola Lakes - by Chuyee
We loaded our gear into the bus Hoping that there was a spot for us We left the school, our starting location And ventured out to our destination As we drove up the steep mountain range Some of us started to feel a little strange We drove left and we drove right It gave some of us a fright! Thankfully we had buckled our belts quick and tight And looked out the window to see the great sight We went to a very fun place, Quinola Lakes Where Bunny & Lyndal baked We had lots of fun But some of us got hit by the sun But it was all better when we had hamburger buns We washed and cleaned ourselves, ready to go to sleep We saw the boys trembling because something gave them the creeps Once we all went to sleep all the teachers felt relief But anyways, that was their belief We woke up in the morning Everyone was yawning Our hungry stomachs drove us insane Then our hunger was cured with coco pops and nutrigrain We did fun activities, but best was the slide Later on we had to go inside We loaded our gear into the bus Hoping that there was room for us Departing away with a slow sad sigh As our journey had ended we said goodbye
