Greetings from Potsdam. I hope this newsletter finds you in good health and spirits. I just finished teaching a Set Theory and Logic class. We showed that, for all sets A, B and C, A x (B U C) = (A x B) U (A x C). Does this bring back memories for you? Mathematics has always been amazing to me in that many great ideas and theorems remain interesting over a long period of time. The Fundamental Theorem of Calculus is about 350 years old and will be talked about for many years to come. Yet, other big questions remain unanswered (are there infinitely many pairs of primes of the form p, p + 2)? At Potsdam, we enjoy helping our students master thinking about mathematics, through writing and speaking it. This year (2010-11) I am happy to report that we have large numbers of students in all of our undergraduate courses (especially in our 100 level coursesthe college as a whole had the largest first year class in years.) Though our College budget has been cut severely, we are still getting by. We now share our secretary, Phyllis, with the Anthropology department and she has done a great job. We have a lot less support for professional development from the State budget, so we have been going to fewer national conferences (I don’t think any faculty went to the Joint Mathematics Meetings last January). Our Alumni supported Foundation budget has helped offset the loss in State budget money. Thanks to this budget (Thanks Donors!), and thanks to SGA support of the Math Alliance, we have been able to bring a large number of students to regional Seaway Section MAA meetings. I hope you enjoy this year’s newsletter, which will bring you news of our current students’ achievements, as well as news from our alumni. Greetings from Potsdam. I hope

this newsletter finds you in good health and

spirits. I just finished teaching a Set Theory

and Logic class. We showed that, for all sets

A, B and C, A x (B U C) = (A x B) U (A x C).

Does this bring back memories for you?

Mathematics has always been amazing to me

in that many great ideas and theorems remain

interesting over a long period of time. The

Fundamental Theorem of Calculus is about

350 years old and will be talked about for

many years to come. Yet, other big questions

remain unanswered (are there infinitely many

pairs of primes of the form p, p + 2)?

At Potsdam, we enjoy helping our students

master thinking about mathematics, through

writing and speaking it. This year (2010-11) I

am happy to report that we have large

numbers of students in all of our

undergraduate courses (especially in our 100

level courses—the college as a whole had the

largest first year class in years.) Though our

College budget has been cut severely, we are

still getting by. We now share our secretary,

Phyllis, with the Anthropology department

and she has done a great job. We have a lot

less support for professional development

from the State budget, so we have been going

to fewer national conferences (I don’t think

any faculty went to the Joint Mathematics

Meetings last January). Our Alumni

supported Foundation budget has helped

offset the loss in State budget money. Thanks

to this budget (Thanks Donors!), and thanks

to SGA support of the Math Alliance, we

have been able to bring a large number of

students to regional Seaway Section MAA

meetings.

I hope you enjoy this year’s newsletter, which

will bring you news of our current students’

achievements, as well as news from our

alumni. You can also find out more about the

department through the Facebook groups

Our Philosophy

The program in Mathematics at

Potsdam is based on the premise that

the study of pure Mathematics can be

undertaken successfully by a large

number of students if they are

provided with a supportive

environment. This includes careful

and considerate teaching by well-

trained and dedicated faculty,

continual encouragement, successful

role models, enough success to

develop self esteem, enough time to

develop intellectually, recognition of

their achievement, and the belief that

the study is a worth-while endeavor.

We are dedicated to providing this

supportive environment not only to

our majors but also to all of our

students.

Summary of 2009-2010

The Department of Mathematics had

another strong year. We view our

interactions with our students in the

classroom and during office hours as

our main focus. We continue to

strive to cultivate in them a love of

learning mathematics. The number

of majors, minors and concentrators

remained high. Students participated

in 15 semesters worth of seminars

and independent studies led by 6

different faculty members. Our

department continued to receive

national recognition, as evidenced

by Dr. Reuben Hersh’s article in the

MAA Math Horizons: The Most

Famous Undergraduate Mathematics

Program You’ve Never Heard Of.

Buffalo. A total of 10 Potsdam

students attended the Fall MAA

Seaway Section Meeting in Fredonia,

NY, and a total of 12 Potsdam

students attended the Spring Seaway

Section Meeting at SUNY Oswego.

Several of Blair Madore’s Math 524

students gave presen tations on

projects they worked on as part of

their course work. A good number

of students a t tended the Sa int

Lawrence Valley Undergraduate

Mathematics Conference, Clarkson

University, February 19-20, 2010.

A total of 6 articles or books by

faculty were either published,

submitted for publication, or in

progress. Faculty members

performed several reviews of a wide

variety of books, textbooks and

research articles.

The SUNY Potsdam/Clarkson

Summer Mathematics Research

Experience for Undergraduates

Program, under the direction of Dr.

Joel Foisy, with Harold Ellingsen,

Derek Habermas and Christino

Tamon (Clarkson) serving as faculty

advisors, held its 12th program in

2009. Three SUNY Potsdam

students participated in the 2009

program, working with top math

majors from across the country. The

2010 program is currently underway,

with Dr. Madore, Dr. Foisy, Dr.

Aaron Luttman (Clarkson) and Dr.

Tino Tamon (Clarkson) serving as

faculty advisors. Four SUNY

Potsdam students are participating in

the program.

Dr. Ellingsen continued offering

scholar ships through the NSF

supported von Neumann program,

which just ended in the Spring of

2010. Dr. Madore also organized the

American Mathematics Competition

at SUNY Potsdam, bringing in 122

students from local high schools.

The Department was also active in

service, with most faculty members

serving on school or college-wide

committees.

We were pleased with our students

who graduated. One is going on to a

doctoral program in Mathematics.

Many others plan to teach at either

the elementary or secondary level.

Clarkson-Potsdam REU Program

Supported by NSF, NSA, and the Universidad Autonoma del Estado de Hidalgo, Mexico.

We enjoyed our thirteenth REU in the summer of 2010. We had student participants from all over the US, and two from Mexico. Each group worked on an original mathematics research problem, and wrote up a paper detailing their results. Several students presented their findings at regional and national conferences. We enjoyed numerous group activities, including several cook outs, a hiking trip, and a trip to Ottawa. We are grateful to the National Science Foundation as well as the National Security Agency, for their support of our program.

BRIAN SHAY-I still teach calculus at Canyon Crest

Academy High School in San Diego, CA. I also teach

part time at San Diego Mesa Community College. I

was also chosen by the Governor to be one of 21

members of the California Academic Content

Standards Commission. The Commission evaluated the

Common Core Standards and recommended them, with

some additions, to the California Department of

Education. These standards will become the standards

taught to all students in California. I also serve on the

California Teacher Advisory Council, a group of 12

teachers who advise interest groups, legislator and the

community at large about improving education in

STEM California.

HARRIS SCHLESINGER (BA/MA 1974) was

recently awarded an honorary doctoral degree from the

University of Konstanz in Germany, for his

outstanding contributions to the theory of risk and

insurance. Schlesinger is a usual guest professor in

Konstanz every summer. More information is available

at: http://uanews.ua.edu/2010/07/ uas-schlesinger-receives-honorarydoctorate-from-german-university/ Schlesinger is Professor of Finance and Samford Chair of Insurance at the University of Alabama. He received the Pi Mu Epsilon Award at Potsdam in 1974 and the Minerva Award in 1994.

NANCY SOUSA After 18 months of consulting for

medical device start-up companies, I have started a new

position, as President, Us Operations for Trig Medical

Inc. Trig Medical combines ultrasound images with

position tracking sensors to create a labor and delivery

monitoring system, enabling obstetricians and mothers

to know what is happening during labor. This is my 3rd

medical device start-up and I am looking forward to

putting together a US team to make this a success.

Dear Potsdam, Thank you for the opportunities and trust you placed in me as an undergraduate and graduate student at Potsdam. While my life has taken many directions, it is through the classroom lessons and the many private heart to heart discussion I had with Dr. Stephens and Dr. Spencer that I have been able to complete more than I ever through possible.

I hope this brief (and somewhat boring) write up gives you some insight as to how struggling through undergraduate graduate school prepared me and brought me to a point where I was invited to present a PRA paper on two aspect of Risk at Indian Point at yearly meetings of the IAEA.

To this day I can still remember Dr Stephens' saying, "Read carefully, think deeply, and torture your definitions". Dr. Spencer's also use to ask the never-ending question, "So then what did you do"? In college it seems like just verbiage, but on many nights, as I sat in my office and had no one to discuss risk issues with, Dr, Stephens and Spencer's words gave me a guidance and direction that pulled me through seeming-less impossible problems and their solutions. May the most you pray for be the least you receive, PASTER TONY DIUGLIO (BA 1973) Pi Mu Epsilon

Jeffery Washburn '79 I am now the President of the

Alumni Association Board of Trustees at SUNY

Potsdam. I have been on the Board for six years and

make it back to Potsdam about four times a year. I

enjoy working with the other board members, faculty,

staff, and students. It is very rewarding to see how

much everyone cares about SUNY Potsdam and the

success of our students. Even in these tough economic

times, SUNY Potsdam continues to provide an

affordable and fantastic educational experience for its

students. If it weren't for faculty, staff, and volunteers

that care so deeply for SUNY Potsdam this probably wouldn't be the case. It is also very pleasing to see that the Mathematics Department continues to be one of the strongest and most successful educational disciplines at SUNY Potsdam. Keep up the great work.
