Inside this issue:
The history of 4-H is one of the most significant and far-reaching stories in America:
a story of youth education, community pride and responsibility, personal leadership,
and volunteerism. Truly unique - born at the grassroots level and involving special
public-private partnerships at the local, state and national levels - it represents the
very essence of America's growth.
Over a century since it began, 4-H continues to thrive and expand today as one of
America's foremost youth development initiatives. 4-H continues to evolve to help
support the needs of our youth today. While 4-H may not look exactly like it did 20
years ago or even 5 years ago, the original concepts and philosophies remain the
same.
This last week I attended the annual SDSU Extension conference in Brookings, SD. It
is always a great opportunity to network with my fellow colleagues and bring back
new ideas that can be put into practice here in our four county area. At the end of our
conference I was able to attend the inauguration of the 20th President of SDSU, Dr.
Barry Dunn. This week marks my 5th year with SDSU Extension and what a ride it as
been. President Dunn’s inaugural speech challenged us all to use our imaginations.
Even as my college professor back in 2002, Dr. Dunn pushed us to answer questions,
and think outside the box. Our vision of what 4-H looks like twenty years from now is
important. 4-H is growing in our area and you the leaders, parents, volunteers and
supporters are the drivers of that success. But we can’t rest on that happy thought, we
have to continue to strive to make the best better, use our imaginations to conceive
the vision for the future of 4-H.
Programmatically the four areas of focus for SD 4-H are Ag-Vocacy, Leadership,
STEM, and Healthy Living. I think you will find that most everything we do fits into
one of these focus areas. My challenge to you as we begin the new 4-H year is to ask
yourself these three questions when directing a 4-H activity, program or event: 1.
Where is the educational value? 2. What can I do to increase the educational value? 3.
How do I make this an engaging and empowering experience?
I look forward to seeing you this fall as we embark into the new year. There is some
exciting things on the agenda and look forward to establishing our goals once again
and accomplishing what we put our minds too!

How will you promote National 4-H Week Oct. 4-10
Events and Activities: Have contests for T-Shirts, poster, bumperstickers, 4-H displays, PSA’s, essays, and feature stories. Use them!
Have a milk shake marathon or a taste-of-our-parish event.
Have a 4-H Family Fun Night.
Have a 4-H Carnival.
Have a 4-H Family Hayride.
Organize a 4-H Week committee for next year’s events!
Let 4-H’ers know that 4-H is big. It’s fun! It’s different! Include some of these meetings ideas to add some sparkle.
Club Meetings: Have an enrollment party at each meeting.
Have a reception for the principal and teachers.
Give a clover sticker to everyone you find smiling.
Distribute something 4-H’y for every bulletin board.
Distribute a list of celebrity 4-H alumni. Scramble the names or have them fill-in-the-blanks.
Invite teen 4-H’ers and 4-H alumni to explain 4-H.
Give door prizes (4-H pencils, T-Shirts, etc.) by drawing completed enrollment cards.
Take a jar of green jelly beans to each meeting. Let members guess how many jelly beans are in the jar. Let the number equal the
number of 4-H’ers in your county or state last year. Explain that it would take a certain number of jars to hold that many jelly beans.
Remember the people who make 4-H a success in your county.
Encourage your clubs to turn National 4-H Week into a memorable event. Use these ideas to trigger their creativity. Advertise a wear-green day. Distribute green and white mints to everyone who wears green that day; or distribute tickets to a fun 4-H event.
Last Minute Ideas: Take a potted plant to key supporters. Stick a paper 4-H clover on a florist stem in the pot.
Distribute books or packs of lifesavers with a note, You’ve been one of us this year! Thank you.
Distribute One Million Dollar candy bars with a note, You’re worth more than this. Thanks for being a friend to 4-H.
Add a 4-H Week message to every e-mail and written correspondence during the week.
Honor an adult volunteer, teen leader, or donor.
Make cookies for the school custodians, secretaries, cafeteria staff, and bus drivers.
Decorate a bulletin board.
Take a donor to lunch each day during 4-H Week. Recruit volunteers and co-workers to do the same. If possible, let 4-H’ers take a
donor or volunteer to lunch, even if it’s in the school cafeteria.
Send sticks or packs of gum with notes attached, Thank for sticking with 4-H!
