Introduction to the Initiative

Instructional Technology Coach Team and the School Community

Continual Improvement

In Action

Moving Forward

The Derry Township School Districts technology vision is to seize the potential of digital resources to transform teaching and learning to prepare students for success in the 21st Century.

Dale

(communicate with Al for history)

the initiative is driven by many (building admin, DO admin, ITCs, classroom teachers, students) - we called upon the knowledge/strengths of many4

Allison:

Vanishing Boundaries - People, Partnerships, Participatory Culture

Collaborative conversation is lens which helps us see possibilities and creates a context for crafting a shared vision of student learning

Mutually beneficial which transforms situations and relationships and scalable to meet the needs of the learning community

Catalyst to spark larger change in culture

Provides choices, collaborative knowledge building and shared constructed knowledge

Buy-in vs. OwnershipCommitment Rather Than Compliance

A Whole School Focus to Increase Student Learning (HEAT)

Creating a Collaborative Culture

HEAT Framework: http://loticonnection.com/

Brianna

Buy-in often equates to coercing someone to buy your product/idea

Ownership allows teachers to design the new school structures and conditions that will allow them to be more successful.8

Defining the Duty: MP2Recognizing Need for Student Participation (Student Tech Assistants)

Increased Frequency of Our Tech Duty Team Meetings (Bi-weekly to Weekly)

Defining the Duty: MP2Managing Technology

Captive Portal causing confusion

Handheld devices tax the network

DaveStudents were opening web based apps on their hand held devices so captive portals were turned off which allowed them immediate access to the internet.

One bi-product of this was that the devices now, even in sleep mode, attach to the network and consume air space and bandwidth. I refer to hand held devices as Network Leeches.

Hand held devices appear to consume more bandwidth. A traditional laptop will cache around 500MB of offline data, an iPhone will not cache any one object larger than 15 kilobytes and the maximum cache is 1.5MB. Most sites have base CSS files larger than that so every time a hand held goes to the Internet, it is like going to a site for the first time.

In the next few slides, students and staff will relate their feelings about the network.22

Student Feedback (paraphrased)Teachers should use more tools to expand learning beyond the classroom. Khan Academy and other educational resources are underutilized to expand classroom learning.

Students need to take more ownership of problem-solving on their own devices. They have low persistence to solve their own technology problems.

Brianna

Student Survey Data (continued)

DaveStudents had issues with the network. Mostly slowness. We suspect some students use their cellular network at school and get spotty access and in turn blame it on the network. Communication and education to students on how to most effectively use their devices is key.26

Dave:Data pulled from Cisco and Aruba controllers shows this...Devices that were seeing on our network, not nearly as many laptops as the students who were surveyed claimed they would bring to school.Library iPod Touch loaner program is a BYOD fill-in program. Two biggest downfalls are Apple ID creation for students is cumbersome and damage, repairs and payment or restitution.Growth seeing more iOS devices, especially after holidays
