If you still haven’t heard of billionaire Robert F. Smith, it’s time to start paying at- tention. The Chairman and CEO of Vista Equity Partners has lived his life mostly under the radar, granting limited interviews about how he’s built a private equity empire and net worth of $2.5 billion. He is No. 274 on the Forbes 400 List of Richest Americans and is richer than bas- ketball legend Michael Jordan and BET founder Bob Johnson. Although the 54-year-old Smith has kept his life and work mostly behind the scenes, his business moves to support the black community are hard to ignore. Smith’s $20 million gift to the National Museum of African-American History and Culture (NMAAHC) came only second to Oprah Winfrey. He’s also backed up his commitment to increasing the number of black students in STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) with support for youth coding programs and a $50 million gift to his alma mater, Cornell University, to bolster African- American and female students in the Col- lege of Engineering. And he isn’t just writing checks. Recently, hundreds of young black pro- fessionals and graduate students filled the International House at the Columbia Black Business Student Association’s 35th an- nual conference to hear him speak. Smith, a Columbia Business School alum, dropped knowledge on everything from economic empowerment to how to build the next generation of leaders in the black community. Here are five key truths for success that came out of Smith’s candid talk: 1. Be an expert at your craft. “The most important thing you can do as a young person is to become an expert. There is no substitute for becoming the best at your craft.” Smith grew up in the era of segregation and was a product of school bussing. While still in high school, he had a knack for com- puter science and called the offices of Bell Labs to ask for a summer internship nor- mally reserved for upperclassmen. They said “No.” So he continued to call them weekly for five months. Despite being repeatedly turned away and eventually ignored alto- gether, one day, he finally got an offer after an older student didn’t show up. Smith would go on to earn a chemical engineering degree from Cornell Univer- sity. Lesson? Smith knew his stuff. And when it was time to ask for a seat at the table, he could deliver based on his merits and per- sistence. 2. Create your own. “I started Vista because I knew no private equity firm would hire me. I saw what they were looking for… So I created my own firm.” After graduating from Columbia Business School with honors in 1994, Smith landed a coveted job at Goldman Sachs, focusing on technology mergers and acquisitions. He successfully led those efforts for six years but eventually wanted to venture out on his own. Smith recalls feeling like no pri- vate equity firms would look at him as a de- sirable candidate. In 2000, Smith took a leap of faith to start his own private equity firm focused on soft- ware and technology-enabled businesses. The fact that Smith, a double Ivy-League graduate with a masters degree in busi- ness, felt he could run into roadblocks shows that even when you are qualified, realizing your unique vision might mean creating your own path. As of last year, Smith’s company man- aged more than $26 billion dollars in assets and is considered to be one of the top pri- vate equity firms in the country. 3. Be an example to others. “I now have the ability to inspire some young African-Americans to say, ‘I can now go actually do this.’” Smith remembers in his younger days reading a spread in Black Enterprise mag- azine about black business leaders. The staggering amount of money they earned blew him away. More than their net worth, Smith says seeing their faces inspired curiosity about their work and made him feel he could pur- sue the same path. Even once he earned his first million at 35-years-old, Smith says he kept a low pro- file “by design,” choosing to develop his skills and company rather than seek lime- 5 KEYS FOR SUCCESS FROM AFRICAN AMERICAN BILLIONAIRE ROBERT F. Serena Williamsjoins board to helpbring diversity toSilicon ValleyArticle courtesy of thegrio.com

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Tennis star Serena Williamshas 39 Grand Slam titles, four Olympic medals, major en-dorsement deals and her own line of clothing and acces-sories. Now she is embarking on a new mission: She saysshe wants to help tech companies diversify their work-forces and solve one of the industry’s most vexing prob-lems.Williams, 35, will get her chance as she joins a Silicon Valley board-

room. Online poll-taking service SurveyMonkey announced Williams’appointment to its board on Wednesday, along with Intuit CEO BradSmith.“I feel like diversity is something I speak to,” Williams said in an inter-

view with The Associated Press. “Change is always happening; changeis always building. What is important to me is to be at the forefront ofthe change and to make it easier for the next person that comes behindme.”Williams didn’t offer specifics about her goals as a corporate director.

She implied that her very presence can help push the company — and,by extension, the industry as a whole — in a more diverse direction.Individual board members don’t usually exert great influence over the

companies they oversee, although they are often compensated hand-somely in cash and stock for their part-time work. SurveyMonkey, a pri-vate company, didn’t say how much Williams will be compensated.VALLEY DIVERSITYSilicon Valley’s lack of diversity has become a recurring source of em-

barrassment in a region that has long sought to position itself as anegalitarian place that doesn’t favor one gender, ethnicity or race overanother. Yet that philosophy hasn’t been reflected in high-tech work-forces , despite the efforts of companies such as Google, Apple andFacebook to fix the problem.Williams has been hanging around Silicon Valley more frequently now

light. After being featured on the cover of Forbes mag-

azine in 2015, that privacy really went out the win-dow. “I lost the ability to go to a movie with my wifeand kids,” Smith says. “It comes at a cost.”But for Smith, the trade-off is well worth it. Just as

the stories of black business leaders inspired himthen, he wants to do the same for others.4. Know your purpose.“Be thoughtful and conscious about what is your

highest and best use.”Smith recalled enjoying social life during his col-

lege years with his brothers from Alpha Phi AlphaFraternity, Incorporated, on Friday nights, then get-ting up as early at 6 a.m. the next day to tutor youthin the Ithaca area.“You didn’t get paid for that,” Smith remembers.

“But we also knew because of the divinity of wherewe’d come from that somebody had done that forus.”Smith’s parents were both schoolteachers who

supported civil rights issues. He suggested to thecrowd at Columbia Business School that not every-one has to be rich or have a high-powered businessjob to make a lasting difference.

“Maybe [the highest and best use is] for you toread to a child daily,” he said.Asking yourself which of your talents and gifts in-

spire you to get up in the morning is time well-spent.5. Invest in the future.“People have put barriers to us for hundreds of

years and been thoughtful about it… So we need tobe thoughtful.”New developments in technology have been com-

pared to the “fourth industrial revolution.” But Smithinsists there is a lot at stake if black people miss outon the current boom in STEM.“These are the on-ramps in our community. The

greatest wealth building opportunity in the history ofthe planet,” Smith remarked.“How do we get a part of that wealth? I guarantee

it’s through technology.”Smith says in the same way that football scouts

start early in finding young athletic talent in elemen-tary school, black communities should invest re-sources in uplifting our own young tech stars.“It’s intellectual property resources that you have

unique dominion over,” says Smith.“There is a system that has been developed, that

we have to develop in technology. Then what hap-pens is, leaders will emerge.”

Robert F. Smith’s 5 keys for success(continued from cover page)

that she is engaged to high-tech entrepreneur, Alexis Ohanian, the co-founder of the online forum Reddit. Like many other African-Americans,she says she’s disappointed that the vast majority of high-paying tech-nology jobs are filled by white and Asian men.At SurveyMonkey, which employs about 650 workers, only 27 percent

of technology jobs are filled by women. Just 14 percent of its total pay-roll consists of African-Americans, Latinos or people identifying them-selves with at least two races, according to numbers the companyprovided to the AP.WHAT SHE CAN DOWilliams’ appointment is part of the solution, according to SurveyMon-

key CEO Zander Lurie. “My focus is to bring in change agents aroundthe table who can open our eyes,” he said. Diversity advocates saywomen and minorities add value to corporate boards — as well as com-panies’ executive ranks — by offering new perspectives and advocatingfor a broader range of a company’s stakeholders, whether that’s cus-tomers, shareholders or employees. In a report on France’s quota requirements for corporate boards, the

business research group Conference Board found that the real valueof adding women came from the fact that they were more likely to beoutsiders. They were more likely to be foreigners, have expertise inmore diverse business issues than men and more likely to have risenthrough the ranks outside traditional networks, such as elite universities. This, in itself, can “substantively” improve the collective decision-makingof a board, according to the report.STEPPING STONERacism is something Williams confronted and overcame at an early

age when she began playing a predominantly white sport. She grew upto become the top-ranked female tennis player in the world.Diversifying Silicon Valley isn’t the only item on Williams’ agenda. Like

a lot of rich athletes, she is interested in becoming more involved in thebusiness opportunities amid the high-tech boom in Silicon Valley. Shesays she is already exploring other opportunities in the area, but isn’tready to provide details yet.Her connection to SurveyMonkey came through her friendship with

Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook’s chief operating officer and another mem-ber of SurveyMonkey’s board. Sandberg’s husband, Dave Goldberg, was SurveyMonkey’s CEO before he died in 2015 while the couple wasvacationing in Mexico.“I have been really interested in getting involved in Silicon Valley for

years, so I have been kind of in the wading waters,” Williams said. “Now,I am jumping into the deep end of the pool. When I do something, I goall out.”
