Our new editor…in her own wordsWhen I’m asked to write about myself, being the spiritual columnist to this magazine the very first lines that

come to my mind are from Bulleshah’s deep verses… “Bulleh! To me I’m not known”… Like most people, it’s

a complicated thing to describe me. Some might say it’s along the lines of being an “acquired taste.” Most

likely, I am just inimitable, like many others. But I’ll do the best I can to describe myself with words. My name

Jigyasa implies curiosity and I do live up to it as I have always been an inquisitive soul. I’d say that I am an

eclectic amalgamation of many seemingly paradoxical things. This can be exemplified in both my seem-

ingly endless persistence on many topics and arguments, as well as my careful cautiousness on other topics

and arguments. This is largely due to how astute I am of the topic: more knowledge, more persistent; less

knowledge, obviously more cautious. I also have times of obsessive compulsions regarding certain things

(mostly just my books, music and yes…though I hate to admit it..Sciences however). Many could qualify my way of talking and thinking about things as prosaic, pithy or terse but I have a poet’s

heart… my expression lies in my writing but when I speak I’m straightforward or rather blunt. And I feel that I am largely incorrigible in my ways. I am very conscious about my goals and priorities and have tremendous faith in God and myself. I love my family and my friends just for who they are. I am conscious of my goals and priorities and accept myself without any regrets(I’d rather say that I’m under a constant crush on life and myself).I am a radical optimist and lead life the positive way. I believe that if life gives you lemons make lemonade!!

Slumdog OscarSlumdog Millionaire swept away Oscar, Golden Globes, Academy and BAFTA Awards... And the movie is a sensa-tion all over the world. Every one is talking about the Million Dollar movie. So we, the FRiENDz, sat down and had our own little debate in our cosy little office and explored the whole situation. So we thought, let’s not make it an article that brags about how much the team knows about the movie, nut make it an open discussion on between readers and readers... And yeah more readers! After you read the... erm... discussion here, please follow the link to our web-site to discuss it.

FRiEnDz -the teenz magazineMarch 2009 l Colored Edition

“If (Slumdog Millionaire) projects India as (a) Third World dirty underbelly developing nation and causes pain and disgust among nationalists and patriots, let it be known that a murky underbelly exists and thrives even in the most developed nations.

“It’s just that the (Slumdog Millionaire) idea authored by an Indian and conceived and cinematically put together by a Westerner, gets creative (Golden) Globe recognition. The other would perhaps not.”

-Amitabh Bachchan

I have seen Slumdog and the film didn’t work for me.”

-Aamir Khan

Slumdog was at Oscars and India was shining, that makes me proud. But as an average Indian, I know that Slumdog wasn’t such a great movie! India makes 1000 times better movies every year and they go un noticed, then why Slumdog Millionaire is shining at Oscars? Answer is ‘Danny Boyle’! Yes I am saying that Slumdog won Oscar just coz a western director made the film, had it been an

Indian director no one’d have noticed it; Dev-D, Tare Zameen Par etc. Are clear examples. Moreover, there is simple formula of winning an award in west! Show India darker then it is! Look at the Man Booker’s Awarded ‘The White Tiger’ it shows India’s very uncommon dark side and a total

spoof on India.... results? AWARDED!Sulmdog shows India in such a way that only 12% of population can be thought of in such situation. They show India as ‘Slumdog’ and results? AWARDED. It seems to me that west loves to see the mud and dark sides, anything that insult’s India is to be awarded. What a shame on them and on us too

that we support such things. A.R. Rehman has composed better music and there are better songs written by Gulzar the Jai Ho. Its merely Daniel Boyle who is bagging Oscars coz so was west and so it will be. No doubt Amitabh Bachhan wasn’t happy with Slumdog winning an Oscar. And in views of Amir Khan India needs no

Oscars to prove itself... as Gandhi needs no Nobel Prize for his non-violence and peace.-Shiraz Ali, High School Student in New Delhi, India

FRiEnDz -the teenz magazineMarch 2009 l Colored Edition

Recently I read “Slumdog is pornography of poverty ...something and many of us Indians are not very Happy! The question arises, what are we congratulating ourselves for? Calling Slums dogs? Well if the question was why Slum and Dark India is shining... the answer, in my opinion, lies in simple logics of Human nature. We like to see what we haven’t and many of us haven’t seen the actual Slums. So the movie is to be awarded coz is showed us the reality. Moreover, India’s image is not at all hurt (as Indians fear) everyone knows we are 3rd World Country just by name. In real-ity we compete with superpowers. Danny Boyle wasn’t very famous in his own home without the Indian mates.

-Kirti Malhotra, Collage Student, IndiaMe and my friends were having a discussion ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ and many of them were very upset about the image it was setting about India. One of them argued that we have landed on Moon and we are one of the fastest growing country with such a stable economy that superpow-ers went in Recession and we survived and still we are seen as ‘Slumdogs’? Phew! Being an MBA student I have my own perspective about it. I answered that It is not growth of India that sells in market, It is, fortunately or unfortunately, Slums! Danny was here to make a movie that could earn him money and fame and that is what he did! Even we want to see Titanic where boasting ships fail and we want to see and the worst or the best..... the extremes coz that is what satisfies human mind.I am sorry to say, but had it been made by an Indian director neither it would have gained so

much of criticism by Indians nor awards in West. And before we ask anything of Danny...lets ask the Indian author who wrote it!-Avinash, MBA Student , India

Danny Boyle’s finest since Trainspotting. In fact, it’s the best British/Indian gameshow-based romance of the millennium.

-Ian Nathan, Empire Magazine

Slumdog Millionaire is no doubt a good movie. Of all the criticism and praise it re-ceived I have a different point of view. Slumdog Millionaire is based on book by Vikas Swarup, the original name of the book was ‘Q & A’ and it was very cleverly and beautifully made into a commercial film. The collaboration of East and West proved to be a great success. The movie gained appreciation and criticism both (like any other movie) but the to such an extent that it was awarded to be the best motion picture of the year. And that’s what a movie supposed to do! Engage viewers ... so that is all what Slumdog did, Oscars just added to fire. Finally the talent from east is being recognised in west too. And India from Snake Charmer’s Image has shifted to much better prospective... using the Slumdog Image.

1800It Is How You See Things

Let me share a story with you to explain the title, it goes like this...The giant shoe company Bata hired a marketing and sales person and sent him in Jungles of Africa to promote Sales of their footwear. After touring for nearly a week the person shot back a telegram:

“Africa is populated by tribes and villages. Nobody wears shoes here so no scope of marketing and sales of shoes here.”You may declare what a correct judgement & deci-sion by young professional. Chances are you may agree with him!

FRiEnDz -the teenz magazineMarch 2009 l Colored Edition

Now the second half of the story, On receiving the tele-gram General Manager Marketing of Bata Group called back the young executive and instead send his smartest marketing professional to same place for same job and challenge. The guy also went there and situation as per his perspec-tive and shot back a telegram very next day:“Nobody wears shoes in this part of the world. So there’s lot of potential. We shall teach them the importance of shoes and shall need heavy consignments of all sizes.”Same place, same situation, same people! What changed 180 Degrees was how they see things.

Diary of a Teen My ObstaclesI just came back from my principal’s office after showing her the script of the Republic Day Programme and received appreciation for my work. I was feeling really confident, upbeat, happy, and proud of myself. I was now sure that this programme will be a big success, nothing will stop me. I’ll give my 100%, and there will be no problem. All’s fine now. Just then I heard some of my classmates backbiting about me. “Oh My God! She thinks too much of herself. We know how she gets to do all that stuff. She’s done all the buttering! She tries to dominate everyone! We’ll tell Ma’am. She’ll not be able to do this! She’s just wasting her time and ours too. This show will be a flop! She’s useless, and so is her ‘script’!” The whole positive feeling received a setback. I was now feeling sad, depressed, angry, disappointed, and apprehensive, and anxious. Why is it that I perform my work, putting my heart and soul into it, and things go against me?

What actually is my fault? Am I wrong? Have I done something unjustified? Am I not supposed to do what I’m doing? Will I be able to do my work? Will my endeav-our succeed? Will everyone just shut up?Sometimes, I feel that everything is going against me. I know I’m doing what I’m supposed to, but the situations are not favourable. And the saddest part is that I haven’t done anything wrong. Well then, should I stop writing the script? Should I leave school? Ah! I’m totally confused. Nothing seems to go in the positive direc-tion. But shouldn’t I realize my real value? Hey! Wait a second, when I’m not wrong, why should I give a damn about people who’re against me?I suddenly remembered Shah Rukh Khan’s poignant dialogue in Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge wherein he said, “My Mother used to tell me, ‘dear son, whenever you follow anything in life, there will be two dif-ferent paths to follow what you want:The Right Path, and The Wrong Path.

by Madhvi Chopra

FRiEnDz -the teenz magazineMarch 2009 l Colored Edition

When you follow the Wrong path, initially, you will find it easier to tread on that path, achieving all aspects of fame and glory; but at the end of it all, you’ll be a loser. You’ll be defeated by the repercussions of your wrong deeds. But, when you follow the Right path, you may at first encounter obstacles, and hindrances, but in the end, you actually did what was right, and you’ll be a winner, and the world will be at your feet because what you did was right.I wish to inform all the puzzled readers that Shah Rukh Khan delivered this exemplary dialogue when Kajol’s mother, Farida Jalal was cajoling both of them to run away and get married, while he wanted to first convince Kajol’s father, Amrish Puri, for their relationship.I thought about people who try to climb high mountain peaks. They start with the climbing spot. They walk tirelessly for miles and miles to reach the base camp. This is their first milestone. They witness storms, avalanches, blizzards, and other natural forces, but keep mov-ing on. They may have the lack of proper oxygen supply, may be living without food and water, and might sometimes have serious threats to their lives. But they move on with perseverance, grit, and determination. In the same way, social activists might face brutal lathi charges during their protests. They might be arrested, detained, beaten up, and even insulted and harassed by people, police, and bureaucrats. But did they stop working? Did Medha Patkar, Sunderlal Bahu-guna, and others leave their enterprise incomplete? No! When I’m not wrong, why should I bother? It’s my choice to accept or reject their allegations. And I choose to deny them, be-cause they are wrong. No hindrances can affect my character, my efforts unless I let them act on me. People will say thing against me. They are like that. They have the habit. They will continue no matter what happens. But all this should not matter to me because I’ve not done anything wrong. Obstructions, hurdles, and struggles are inevitable parts of life. But unless I take it in my stride, everything will affect me psyche. My classmates might ruin my script, instigate my teachers or my principal, or do anything nasty to me. But as far as I’m following the right path, God will be there to erase all my worries. And I’m going to prove it to the world that despite all complications, I am determined to work, and make an effort and emerge victorious. And I will see the world at my feet.

Spiritual Me

The voyage of discovery lies not in finding new landscapes, but in having new eyes. We don’t see thing as they are, we see them as we are.” I don’t actually remember, where I read these lines nut I am sure they are as true today as they were when they were written. The most compli-cated discovery in the world lays in the search foe the real ‘you’ –who you truly are, where you really belong! Peer pressure, expectations, aspirations and dreams sometimes prevent you from realizing what you really want in life.

HealthTeen YearsIn the hay days of childhood children see the world with the eyes of their parents. Their emotions and behaviours are nour-ished by tender care of families, culture and value of there parents. Slowly and slowly the day of childhood passes away and children find themselves on the crossroad of adoles-cence. The teenage years can be an emotional upheaval for all concerned. A gulf can grow between parents and their

children during adolescence. It’s a time of rap-id physical development and deep emo-

tional changes. These are exciting, but can also be confusing and uncomfortable for

child and parent alike.

This article deals with the process of adolescence, the upheavals it can

cause, some of the problems that arise, and ways in which they can be man-

aged.

by Dr. Ayush Pandey

FRiEnDz -the teenz magazineMarch 2009 l Colored Edition

Process of adolescence

The process of rapid physical changes in adolescence is called puberty. Pubescence is the era of accelerated growth which takes place together with the development of the secondary sex characteristics. In girls it begins at about 10-11 years and is complete by thirteen, while in boys it tends to be about one year later. There may be individual variation, but events follow a definite time-table. The age at which puberty starts has been dropping in most countries, probably due to better nutrition. So children may hit puberty earlier than the normal. The hormone changes responsible actually begin some years earlier and may produce periods of moodiness and restlessness. Girls start these changes before boys and will, for the first three or four years, appear to be matur-ing much faster. After this, boys catch up.

The changes are both physical and behavioural; the physical changes include sudden spurt of body structure and development of secondary sex characters. The behavioural changes includes shyness, arrogance, feeling of independence and curiosity about their physical changes make them introvert and inquisitive. Growth and development uses a lot of energy, and this may be why teenagers often seem to need so much sleep. Their getting-up late may be irritating, but it may well not be just laziness. They and their parents may worry less if they remember that there’s a lot of difference in the ages at which these changes occur.

A huge unexplored world of imagination, thoughts, miseries of behavioural changes and fanta-sies comes their way. Social development is concerned with the exciting transition from complete dependence on the mother to adolescent self sufficiency. It is determined both by the individual’s personality and the environment in which he or she grows up.

Relationships within the family also change. Parents become less important in their children’s eyes as their life outside the family develops. As everybody knows, adolescents spend a lot of time in each other’s company, or on the telephone to each other. Although this can be irritating to par-ents, it is an important way of becoming more independent. These friendships are part of learning how to get on with other people and gaining a sense of identity that is distinct from that of the family.

FRiEnDz -the teenz magazineMarch 2009 l Colored Edition

Parents often feel rejected, and in a sense they are. But this is often necessary for young people to develop their own identity. Even if you have rows and argu-ments, your children will usually think a lot of you. The rejections and conflicts are often not to do with your personalities, but simply with the fact that you are par-ents, from whom your children must become indepen-dent if they have their own life. • As they become more independent, young people want to try out new things, but often recognize that they have little experience to fall back on when things get difficult. This may produce rapid changes in self-confidence and behaviour - feel-ing very adult one minute, very young and inexperi-enced the next.

The erratically and conflicting behaviour of teenag-ers with parents and society is the result of hormonal changes. To maintain a harmonious relationship with teenagers the parents, family members should have a sympathetic and balanced approach.

All su-perheroes are banned and here the forces gather...uniting of Watchmen. It talks about the lives of retired superheroes who are living in world which is about to go on Nuclear war! Filming of graphic novel was very challenging task, but was performed well .
