SFriends of Harvard Track,

On behalf of the Friends of Harvard Track (FoHT), we are happy to report that FY16 was another highly successful year for both fundraising and friend-raising. Just as the men’s and women’s programs have set new standards of excellence with impressive performances throughout the year, the FoHT alumni and parents have kept pace by providing financial and volunteer support of historic proportions. In FY16, generous donors gave over $368,000 to the FoHT, marking the second-highest annual donation total in our long history. While we emphasize that the hard work of the student-athletes and their coaches are the primary factors for their incredible achievements in competition, we also give thanks to the hundreds of loyal alumni and parents whose support helps to make those achievements possible.

During FY16, the FoHT continued to offer opportunities for alumni and parents to connect with each other and support and celebrate the men’s and women’s programs. The FoHT events over the past year included the following highlights:

• September 11 – Alumni cross-country race at Franklin Park in connection with the annual HYP meet • October 23 – Alumni mini-reunion at Gordon Indoor Track • January 9 – Annual FoHT Alumni and Family Meet at Gordon Indoor Track • January 16 – Young Alumni Social Gathering following Beantown Challenge Meet • January 16 – Donor Recognition Dinner following Beantown Challenge Meet • January 29 – Alumni fundraising dinner hosted by Cannavo family in Staten Island, NY following annual HYP meet • February 6 – Alumni and Parent Dinner at Indoor Heps in Ithaca, NY • March 16 – Alumni gathering at River Oaks Country Club in Houston, TX • April 15 – Alumni gathering at Harvard Club of New York City • May 7 – Alumni and Parent Dinner at Outdoor Heps in Princeton, NJ • May 28 – Alumni mini-reunion at Gordon Indoor Track • June 6 – Alumni social and fundraising gathering in San Francisco, CA

The busy, multi-regional schedule of FoHT events demonstrates the ongoing interest of alumni and parents to gather in the name of Harvard track, and the commitment of the FoHT to planning these events throughout the year. We look forward to continuing and broadening the event schedule during FY17 and beyond.

HDear Friends of Harvard Track,

The 2015-2016 season ushered in a new year of athletic and personal growth for our student-athletes, once again proving that the record books are not safe from their constant improvements. By the end of the 2016 outdoor campaign, the men and women of Harvard track & field/cross-country had set no fewer than 21 school records, 12 of them Ivy League all-time bests. The women’s team won its sixth-consecutive Heps Track title this past spring, keeping the Frank Greenberg Trophy on display at Gordon, where it has become a familiar sight. The men’s victories in the 4x800m relays at both Indoor and Outdoor Heps this year bode well for the future of this young and talented team.

The Crimson also competed well outside the ivy-covered walls, made possible by the generous donations we received from our Friends. The team traveled to meets in Wisconsin, Kentucky, North Carolina, Virginia, Florida, California, Texas, Washington state, and Oregon. Over the course of three seasons, Harvard produced 10 NCAA qualifiers, who together won six first-team and two second-team All-America honors. The student-athletes would not have access to national-level competitions throughout the season without the fundraising and support provided by the Friends Group; this year, thanks to all your contributions, we were able to raise over $368,000 to help fund these trips, along with other essential aspects of the program.

While their competitions took them to venues across the country, the team was hard at work back in the classroom this year as well. The Crimson were honored with 15 selections to the U.S. Track and Field and Cross-Country Coaches’ Association All-Academic Team, demonstrating their dedication to their studies. And both teams once again earned All-Academic with Distinction honors. This group truly embodies the ideal of excellence in athletics and academics.

This was not a year for one of our trans-Atlantic journeys for the Harvard/Yale-Oxford/Cambridge meet, but there was another quadrennial event in store that was just as exciting: the U.S. Olympic Trials and the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro both featured Crimson athletes. At the Trials, seniors Autumne Franklin (400mH) and Paige Kouba (3000mSC), junior Jade Miller (400mH), sophomore Courtney Smith (10,000m), and freshman Gabby Thomas (100m, 200m) competed in Eugene with the nation’s finest athletes on the Road to Rio. Franklin and Thomas earned a pair of sixth-place finishes in the 400m hurdles and the 200m, respectively.

These athletes will have another shot at the U.S. Team in four years, but in the meantime, junior Nikki Okwelogu traveled to Rio to represent Nigeria. The Ivy League record-holder in the shot put and discus throw placed 29th at the Games, and will surely use the experience to inform her future competitions both domestically and at the international level.

Okwelogu’s performance in Rio marked the end of a long season, but we are already looking forward to an incoming class of freshmen

who will join our family for the coming year. Twenty-three new athletes will add to the team’s ranks, including Anthony DeNitto from Newton South HS, MA (All-America honors at NB Nationals, MA state record-holder in the LJ), Zoe Hughes of the UK (Heptathlon PR 5307; 2015 World Youth Championships participant), Judy Pendergast from Naperville, Ill. (3-mile PR 15:53.8; 4th at 2015 Foot Locker XC Nationals), and Kilkenny, Ireland’s Donagh Mahon (high jump PR 2.13m; Irish Junior National record-holder).

The 2016-2017 season will also bring a new member to the coaching staff: Coach Darcy L. Wilson will be heading our men’s and women’s throws groups. Before coming to Harvard, Wilson coached for four years at Brown University. She has coached 14 All-Americans, including an NCAA champion hammer thrower in 2009.

This year was a time for sad goodbyes, as well. Gary Geissler, our beloved athletic trainer, has retired after 25 years of dedicated service and unfaltering support for the athletes in his care. We will miss “G-man’s” expertise, but we’ll miss his friendliness and love of laughter even more. Luckily, Harvard has found trainer Nicolas Benitez to fill Gary’s big shoes. Formerly of Brown University, Benitez will replace Gary as head athletic trainer for the men’s and women’s track and field and cross-country teams.

As I reflect on the past year and look forward to the year that’s to come, I am once again filled with gratitude for the help and support that the Friends group provides. Without the efforts of our board, class agents, volunteers, and parent/alumni networks, we wouldn’t be able to provide our student-athletes with the opportunities required to truly pursue excellence and make the most of their time at Harvard. I’d like to thank you for recognizing how truly special these young men and women are, and dedicating your time, energy, and funds towards helping them succeed.

Sincerely,

Jason SaretskyThe William W. “Bill” McCurdyDirector of Track and Field/Cross Country

AD DISCRETIONARY ENDOWMENT FUNDS

Thanks to contributions from the donors listed below, these AD Discretionary Endowment Funds collective-ly generate income to benefit Harvard Track each year. AD Discretionary Endowment Funds are unrestricted gifts designed to allow for long-term flexibility. Income from these funds is incremental to the department’s normal budget and provides crucial support for personnel, recruiting, out-of-region travel, technology, fa-cility enhancements and other programmatic needs that fall outside the scope of the Friends group annual budgets. These endowment funds require a minimum contribution of $100,000. For more information on establishing an ADDF, please contact Jennifer Downing at [email protected] or 617-496-4317.

Harvard Class of 1955 & Friends of Harvard Track Establish Rittenburg Travel Fund and Hurdles Award

As part of its 60th Reunion Gift, Harvard’s Class of 1955 and members of the Friends of Harvard Track and Field raised over $27,000 to establish a fund to support travel expenses for Harvard men and women hur-dlers who are selected to the Harvard-Yale Oxford- Cambridge Meet team. The Rittenburg Travel Fund will be administered by Jason Saretsky, the William W. “Bill” McCurdy Director of Track and Field /CrossCountry. The Fund will also provide a hurdles award for a male and female winner at the meet as determined by the coaches. The first winners were Autumne Franklin and Jarvis Harris of Harvard at the meet held at Oxford last June.

Bob Rittenburg was on the Freshman and Varsity track teams where he was a four-time All-Ivy and All-Hep-tagonal selection in the hurdles and long jump. He was captain of the 1954-55 track team and died on May 21, 2012 after a courageous battle with acute myloid leukemia at the age of 78. His death came 57 years to the day of his signature performance in the 1955 Harvard-Yale track meet when he scored an incredible 26 points in an upset win over Yale, winning four events and placing second in two others. Harvard needed every point to defeat the Elis 70 1/3–69 2/3. Bob was the Bingham Award Winner in 1955 and inducted into the Varsity Club Hall of Fame in 1980.
