This is a community celebration —

page 2 . . . hello and welcome to the
new Co-Supervisor of
the Bookmark Debra Wilson! Debra has
lived in El Paso since
1998 and has a strong background in
retail management and customer service.
Debra owned and operated her own
kitchenware store in Ruidoso, NM, for
twelve years before relocating to El
Paso, where she opened and operated an
import business for five years. Debra
has also created original design work for
Mexican-made items.
Debra was raised in northwest Texas and
attended Texas Tech University.
Though busy learning all aspects of her
new position under the tutelage of Co-
Supervisor Gisela Lichon, Debra’s
number one goal is meeting customers’
needs.
WELCOME, DEBRA!
goodbye . . . to our good friend and
Co-Supervisor Annick Dellman-Schafer. Annick began her
service with the
Bookmark as a volunteer
back in another century, followed by
service on the Bookmark Board of
Directors. She served for almost a
year as VP in charge of Volunteers
and in Spring 2003 she was hired as
Co-Supervisor.
Annick’s vast knowledge of books,
writers, and the publishing industry
was a huge asset to the operation of
the Bookmark. Her willingness to
“go the extra mile” for customers was
exemplary.
Annick and her husband Steve have
undertaken a move to Little Rock, AR,
where Annick already has plans to
locate and join a local Friends group.
BEST WISHES, ANNICK & STEVE

DOWN MEMORY LANE (a semi-regular feature)
By Pat Phillips
A few years ago we interviewed
Margaret Burlingame and thought
you would enjoy this humorous story
she shared about Virginia Brilliant.
Her story takes place around No-
vember 1978 when Westside Library
had just moved out of the Bookmo-
bile at Shadow Mountain and Mesa,
and into the Westside Recreation
Center (now Galatzan Center). There
was a separate building on the other
side of the parking lot (still is) which
was the community swimming pool.
Here is what Margaret shared. “I
remember we weren’t even open yet,
and we were over there at the new li-
brary unpacking boxes. Virginia
Brilliant was a swimmer and she
came over still dripping in her swim-
ming suit and said, “What’s going on,
I want to help.”
Virginia Brilliant turned out to be a
dedicated, energetic, tireless volun-
teer and even though almost 33 years
have gone by, her name still comes
up in conversation today.
Definitely the mark of a good vol-
unteer!
Our Volunteers are the best! We can never say THANK YOU
too often! (thank you!)
Pat Phillips retired this summer from the
rigors of producing the Friends Newslet-
ter. After writing, photographing, fold-
ing, sticker-ing, and finally, mailing this
document for more than eight years, Pat
has turned over newsletter duties to the
new generation. THANK YOU, PAT!
