Wing Ding in Grapevine, Texas has happened. Next years annual event
will be in ???
Looking forward to some cooler temperatures to enjoy riding our
motorcycles. I'm sure September will bring a change of weather.
Still waiting on information about changes coming to the GWRRA
association, most will not be effective until 2018. For now we will keep
doing what we do, and enjoy our motorcycles.
The 2018 Goldwing Raffle tickets have been selling slowly. See Marc to
get a few books for friends and family, someone will win a new Goldwing
or $10,000 dollars, or second prize of $1000.00, maybe third prize of
$500.00.
Hope to see you sooner than later.

As safe riders we all wear helmets. The following is intended only as a reminder of what makes a safe helmet, including headsets. The material comes from the “Florida Motorcycle Handbook” but is not a direct quote due to space limits.
Identifying Unsafe & Illegal Motorcycle Helmets
The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) requires that all motorcycle helmets sold in the U.S. meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 218. Accordingly, Florida law requires that motorcycle helmets meet FMVSS 218 requirements. The code clearly states: “Helmets not designed for use by motorcycle occupants, including but not limited to the following, are not approved: bicycle helmets, toy helmets, military combat helmets, flight helmets, soft helmets and team sports helmets.” Some riders wear cheap, unsafe helmets that do not meet FMVSS 218. Most of these helmets are sold as novelty items and are used to circumvent safety requirements. It is important to note that some sellers of novelty helmets provide DOT stickers separately for motorcyclists to place on non-complying helmets. In this case, the DOT sticker is invalid and does not certify compliance.
In addition to the DOT sticker, labels located inside the helmet showing that a helmet meets the standards of private organizations like Snell or the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) are a good indicator that the helmet meets the federal safety standard. A novelty helmet that has a phony DOT sticker plus a phony Snell or ANSI sticker is rare and would probably not be seen.
Wearing of headsets.
No person shall operate a vehicle while wearing a headset, headphone, or other listening device, other than a hearing aid or instrument for the improvement of defective human hearing.
This section does not apply to:
Any law enforcement officer or to any emergency vehicle operator equipped with any ear protection device.
Any person operating a motorcycle who is using a headset that is installed in a helmet and worn so as to prevent the speakers from making direct contact with the user’s ears so that the user can hear surrounding sounds.
Any person using a headset in conjunction with a cellular telephone or communications with a base operations that only provides sound through one ear and allows surrounding sounds to be heard with the other ear.

“HARTLEY HAPPENINGS” – Hello Wingnutts, and welcome to the month of September. Terry and I hope everyone is doing well. WE WOULD LIKE TO CONGRATULATE THE CHAPTER IN CELEBRATING THEIR TWENTY FIFTH (25
th) ANNIVERSARY
THIS YEAR. Next month, the Chapter turns twenty-six. Ride safe everyone, and keep your eyes open to the hazards around you.
At the August Chapter gathering the following took place: we had one visitor from Chapter Y. Bill Coughenour and Lee McKay won the patch drawings, door prizes were won by Paul Murph, Bruce Hutchinson, Dee Loud-en, Marc Oakley, Jim Rutherford, Roberta Hair (FL1-Y), Effie Lasoff, Rena Oakley and Mark Lasoff. Thank you all who brought door prizes. The evening’s 50-50 drawings were won by Kathie Jette and Lee McKay. The Ride Jar drawing was rolled over as Fred Baker was not in attendance. Door Prize drawings were won by Mark Lasoff and Jeff Cox. Motorcycle tickets were won by Ralph Mathis On October 19
, 2017 the Chapter will turn 26 years old. As you can see, we’ve been around the block a time or two.
We have in our Chapter only one couple of the founding members and that would be our Chapter Directors, Geno and Kathie Jette. There are a few that still live in town, but are no longer active in GWRRA. Some have moved away but still keep in touch once in a while. We would like to thank each and every one of our members for belonging to one of the greatest Chapters in the state of Florida. We just keep doing what we’re doing and there’s no doubt that we’ll be around for another 25+ years. Terry and I will miss the October and November gatherings as we will be on a 5 week RV adventure to Illinois, Indi-ana, Ohio and Missouri. Once we get back from that we have a cruise at the end of October and the beginning of November, then another RV trip to Punta Gorda to spend a few days with our Newmar Family. Terry and I checked out Wekiva State Park in July, which is just down the road from where the Florida District Rally will be held next year, to see what the place is like for RVers that may want to camp during the Rally. The park was very nice with full hook ups and nice shady spots to park your RV. For those with RVs, if you want to camp out for the District Rally, you will have to make your reservation through ReserveAmerica website. Be sure to check out the 2017 Florida GWRRA Events in our newsletter and see what’s coming up that you may want to attend. Wing Ding will be held in Grapevine, TX this year from August 29 to September 2. The Mississippi District Rally is October 12-14 in Gulfport, MS and the final Region A Rally will be October 26-29 in Eufaula, Al.
Congratulations to the following members on their GWRRA anniversaries:

BYE...BYE...SUMMERTIME
Wow... Summer is over (almost)... Football season is on the horizon (YEA) and some really good chapter rides coming up this month! We will do a little southern cruisin', a bit of northern cruisin', a touch of eastern cruisin' & also some western cruisin'. Hopefully, something there for everyone. Let's just get out to ride & have fun..
Thanks & Kudos to those & their ride suggestions. It helps keep your chapter calendar going in a positive direction. Please keep the suggestions coming.
September normally brings us some cooler weather that is perfect for our sport & hobby, AKA..... motorcycles....
Many of us are starting to plan our fall activities to include overnight bike rides to the scenic pan-handle....and or....Foley, Alabama to Lamberts Cafe, (Home of the thrown yeast rolls) or a 275 mile ride to the last GWRRA "Region A" rally in Eufaula, Al.
A few even heading for 'Wings over the Smokies", aka... the North Carolina rally in Waynesville, NC. and most likely in that location for the next several years
Being in Waynesville almost puts the "Tail Of The Dragon" and the beautiful "Cherohala Skyway" out of reach for most. It will add an additional 75 miles round trip to those places from Waynes-ville and will put that round trip over the 250 mile mark for the day. A 250+ mile day on a motorcycle thru winding switchback mountains is a bit taxing on any biker.
Could be that Cherokee, NC may still be the best place to stay and commute back and forth to Waynesville. At least, that would still put you in a stones throw from many of the reasons why you went, to include and ride The Dragon, Cherohola Skyway, Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg, Grandfather Mountain, Foothills Parkway, Franklin, Dillard or Highlands.
Our ride jar is over $100 tonight, An Early Christmas gift from Guess Who?
Thank you, "Santa Fred Baker"!!!
